London-based, Welsh band The Joy Formidable (guitarist/vocalist Rhiannon "Ritzy" Bryan, bassist Rhydian Dafydd, and drummer Matthew James Thomas) sold out the Turf Club in St Paul on Friday, November 2nd.

Tancred (aka Jess Abbott) opened the show. We’ve been writing about Abbott since her days in Now, Now Every Children (later shortened to just Now, Now), but left the band in late 2013. Her first national tour, she said she travelled by herself in Oct 2014, but admitted that it was too awkward playing music by herself. By March 2016, we got to see her with a full band: bassist Terrence Vitali and drummer Kevin Medina. It’s that same lineup that we see Tancred at the Turf Club on Friday night.

Before “Underwear” (taken from her latest album Nightstand), Abbott mentioned that she used to live in Minneapolis, “It’s still cold here. There’s still good food and polite people.”

Near the end of their 40-min set, as they were tuning their guitars for the finale song “Pretty Girls”, Abbot mentioned how her black turtleneck made her look like Steve Jobs. Then Vitali interrupted about how he overheard her saying how she was sweating through her turtleneck.

“Why would you say that?!?” Abbot clarified that she was just nervous (sweating) about playing, but admitted that it sounded pretty funny hearing “sweating through my turtleneck”. She closed out the banter with her Steve Jobs joke: “Did you hear about the iPhone 69? It still sucks.”

As previously mentioned, The Joy Formidable was one of the first bands we covered a decade ago. The Wales/London band were brand new at the time in July 2008, but we wrote that “a band that I see a lot of potential in.” Our prediction came true, and over the years, we’ve seen the band on and off, whenever they came to town.

In April 2016, while on tour for Hitch, they played their biggest stage in Minneapolis - the 1,500-capacity First Avenue. We’ve only seen the band at smaller “club” gigs prior, so it felt like everyone was on their best behavior: “the First Avenue performance was more of a proper rock show, with bigger stage, full light rigs, and the band seemingly very focused.”

After a two year-absent, the band returned to the Twin Cities, headlining and selling out the Turf Club in St Paul on Friday night. It was nice to see the band at a small “pub gig” again. Bassist Rhydian Dafydd and singer “Ritzy” seemed really loose and making faces as they launched into “This Ladder Is Ours”. Even the drummer would occasionally rise from his seat to whip the audience into a deserving frenzy. Seeing the band this animated vs their button-down-proper gig in 2016, was a much better experience.

Even though St Paul was not their first show in this 2018 tour, it sure felt fresh and fun, as if they were just starting out. Maybe it’s also because it felt like the band really loved playing new songs from the band’s fourth album AAARTH (which means “Bear”), but it all sounded like everyone was having a good time.

Some of the stand-out AAARTH songs, like “Y Bluen Eira” (which means “The Snowflake”) and “Cicada (Land on Your Back)” went over well with the audience. However, of course, older songs like “The Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie” and “Whirring” from their debut The Big Roar had the loudest and best response from the audience.

After ten years of covering The Joy Formidable, they still sound as fresh and amazing as they did a decade ago. Here’s looking for another ten years.

We saw her in Oct 2014 and said, “Here's the thing about Allen, she writes lyrics like she sees them. They are songs about people she knows and how she feels about them, for example, "Alfie" about her kid brother Alfie Allen and Game of Thrones star...”

If you’re wondering about the high ticket price ($62), it’s justified because she has employed over 10 dancers/staff and undergoes various costume changes throughout her set.

We were so impressed with Low Cut Connie at Rock the Garden earlier this year, that we can’t wait for their upcoming November 1st show.

Since we saw them, the band have been busy appearing on various radio and television and wowing audiences across the nation. Rolling Stone loved them so much that they’ve added their record on their 50 Best Albums of 2018 so far.

Show up early to check out Ruby Boots; she was last seen in town on June 2018. Ruby is an Australian, but based in Nashville, Tennessee. Fans of Nikki Lane should take note, as Lane co-wrote/sang on some of her songs.

Jessica Hernandez is one of those performers that you just can't keep your eyes off of. She's beautiful, she's expressive, and she's super talented. Add a rocking band with a trombone player and you have a hell of a fun band. The band recently headlined the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on October 14th.

Local group The Ultrasounds opened up the night. Their sound was much more subdued than that of the other two bands but was a great warm-up for what was to come.

Tancred

Next was Tancred. These guys were just as captivating as Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas but in a completely different way. There must be a thing with the name "Jess" because, not only was Jessica Hernandez's voice amazing, so was Jess Abbott, the singer of Tancred (also the singer of Now, Now, a defunct Minneapolis group)

Jess had an infectious smile that matched her amazing, genuine voice. The way she would smile while singing was enough to give you the warm fuzzies. You could tell she meant what she was singing and, although there wasn't much movement on the stage, there was plenty of energy to fill the venue. I loved the way the trio would look at each other and laugh in between, and even during, their songs.

The music was indie-pop but not generic. There was something about it that definitely stuck with me and made me fall in love with them. Jess' voice was sweet but still powerful. You could understand the words and hear every single note she played on guitar. It was clean and rehearsed but it didn't feel scripted or boring. Even though everything about the sounded perfect, you could tell the band members weren't bored with what they were doing and there was still room for some fun.

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas, from Detroit, Michigan, were last in town opening for Gogol Bordello. They thrilled crowds then and proved last night that they could pack a venue on their own.

Last night was more than a fun time. Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas took the stage and you instantly felt the mood in the room turn electric.

The way Jessica performs is nothing short of an art. Her face is one of the most expressive faces that I've ever seen fronting a band. It makes you truly feel the music even if you have no clue what the song she is singing is about. The way she moves around the stage gripping the microphone is captivating. She doesn't seem to really have a plan of how she's going to dance during any song but you can tell she is just moving to the music and that can easily make you fall in love with this band.

Even though it's hard to take your eyes off of Jessica, it's also hard to ignore the amazing band that backs her. When watching the members, you can tell that they are truly enjoying what they're doing. They all of smiles on their faces and, in between songs, they will joke with each other while taking sips of their drinks. It's so refreshing to see a band on stage that is truly having a good time. It definitely makes a live show that much more enjoyable.

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas' music is fun. Think 1960's rock with a bit of a modern flair to it. Hernandez's look and voice remind you of Amy Winehouse but the band as a whole takes it into a completely different direction. It's definitely something different and original and the best part is... it's done well. It's the type of music where, even if you've never heard it before, you can't help but start dancing around.

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas have been busy playing festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Riot Fest, and oh so many more. Even though their latest release Secret Evil, released in 2014, is their latest release (and happens to be their debut album), they definitely haven't stopped writing new music. Majority of Friday night's set was full of new music that will be on an upcoming album (a release date has not been announced at this point).

Jessica Hernandez and her band The Deltas will be headlining the Triple Rock Social Club next Friday, October 14th, touring in support of their forthcoming sophomore album (due in early 2017).

Tancred (aka Jess Abbott) will be joining Hernandez on this tour, in support of her debut album Out of the Garden. We previously caught her with her full band in March 2016 and wrote, “A little backstory on Jess Abbott, who mentioned on stage that she lived in Minneapolis for five years and does not miss the snow/cold (she currently resides in California). In fact, she’s downright disappointed that it was so cold (and snowing) on the night that she was back in town. Her connection to Minneapolis is that she is the guitarist for Now, Now (fka Now, Now Every Children). We’ve seen the band on and off from 2010 to 2013 and mentioned Jess almost every time!”

Rumer Willis’ first ever U.S. concert tour is starting this October 12 in Denver, Colorado. Her “Lover the Love” stops in Minneapolis at the Dakota Jazz Club this Friday, October 14th.

Rumer explained the name of her tour, “When I was young, my dad (Bruce Willis) introduced me to the iconic vocalists of the American songbook like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Rosemary Clooney, and others. This craft of storytelling through song has always inspired me. It's such an intimate and honest way to connect with people. Ingrid Michaelson is back in Minneapolis at the Northrop Auditorium this Friday, October 14th.

Indie pop brother trio, AJR (Adam, Ryan, and Jack), will be joining this “Hell No” tour. AJR is certain ‘ready’, after their smash hit ‘I’m Ready’ hitting US Certified Platinum.

Their new track ‘I’m Not Famous’ is currently in rotation on Sirius XM Hits 1. Eldest brother Adam Met explains, “We wanted to write a quirky pop song with some ironic social commentary about the upsides of not being famous. We wrote and produced ‘I'm Not Famous’ in our living room in New York City.”

Foxing’s first-ever headlining tour is starting off really well, judging by the terrific turnout for this very early (4:30pm) all-ages show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis. According to the bands on stage, this was their third night of the Foxing tour and they loved it so far. Perhaps it might be a different story at the end of the tour, but for now, everyone loved it.

The lineup is interesting: instrumental, post-modern rock, alt-rock, emo, etc... There’s a little something for everyone.

Adjy

The evening (well, more like late afternoon) started off with North Carolina’s Adjy. The band is centered around singer (and composer) Christoper Noyes, who sang songs from their forthcoming LP. You can currently check out a “Prelude” via his latest release Another Flammarion Woodcut (Broken Circle Records).

Tancred

According to Tancred (Jess Abbott), this was the first time she’s playing in a full band. She said that the last time she was in town (with Into It. Over It. in 2014) she played her songs by herself and it was awkward and uncomfortable.

The band actually started a little later than advertised, but given the fact that it took them about 20 minutes to get going (including a mini-soundcheck), it was still pretty impressive.

A little backstory on Jess Abbott, who mentioned on stage that she lived in Minneapolis for five years and does not miss the snow/cold (she currently resides in California). In fact, she’s downright disappointed that it was so cold (and snowing) on the night that she was back in town. Her connection to Minneapolis is that she is the guitarist for Now, Now (fka Now, Now Every Children). We’ve seen the band on and off from 2010 to 2013 and mentioned Jess almost every time!

Anyway, Tancred is Abbott’s solo project, and we liked what we heard live. She sounded a little like Veruca Salt and Paramore ... and it probably helped that her forthcoming Polyvinyl album Out of the Garden was produced by Steven McDonald (Redd Kross) and Anna Waronker (That Dog).

Since the record isn’t out yet, I had trouble figuring out the setlist, but, for sure, midway into her set she played the single “Bed Case” (from her white limited 7”).

Lymbyc Systym

Lymbyc Systym took absolutely no time in starting their set. After all, it’s just two brothers (Jared and Michael Bell) on drums and keys. The instrumental band was probably the most interesting choice on the bill. They sounded nothing like any of the other bands, and the audience wasn’t quite sure what to make of them... but pretty soon, would embrace the duo by shouting out “You guys rock!” and bopping their heads in approval.

The only song I could identify was the title track “Split Stones”, taken from their latest Split Stones.

Setlist

St Louis’ Foxing (singer Conor Murphy, bassist Josh Coll, guitarist Ricky Sampson, guitarist Eric Hudson, violinist Emma Tiemann, and drummer Jon Hellwig) took the stage at 7:30pm with their personal stage lighting from the ground floor.

As you can see from their setlist, “Weave” was cross-off in favor of playing “Redwoods” live. The set is a pretty good mix of their two released albums The Albatross and Dealer.

While some people described the band as emo, they also have their chamer/folksy-side to them, that is whenever touring member Emma Tiemann would play violin or when singer Conor Murphy would take out his trumpet.

Based on the strong local youth support for this band, we’re pretty sure that they’ll be doing more headlining shows... it’s simply incredible that this is the first tour that they are playing last.

When I saw Beats Antique on Halloween last year, it was literally one of the best shows I've ever seen. Part of it was because the audience was really into it (nearly 99% of them dressed up) and also because of their impression light and stage show. The stage was custom built by Obscura Digital, using funding from their Kickstarter campaign. I hope they take that programming with them for this new, current tour called "Creature Carnival".

Emancipator and Shpongle are set to open.

It's been a very long time since I saw Placebo. I remember seeing them at First Avenue in 2001 with Idlewild... so it should be nice to see the band again, some 13 years later.

The London-based band are currently touring in support of their new album Loud Like Love, which came out last September 2013.

Opening up for Placebo is The Moth and the Flame, a band that Jess is in love with.

If you've ever seen the film Once, chances are you fell in love with Frames singer Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. After the film, the two became a couple and became The Swell Season ... but ultimately the two broke up. While Hansard recently came through town, it is now Irglova's turn.

The Icelandic singer's new album MUNA is out now and available in all popular formats, including digital, CD, and a recent vinyl pressing.

Rosi Golan: Fortuna

Irglova will be stopping by Minneapolis this Friday, along with Israeli songstress Rosi Golan. Golan will likely play some tracks off her 2008 debut The Drifter and the Gypsy, as well as her recent EP Fortuna, which came out last year on Gypsy Betch.

The last time we saw The Rural Alberta Advantage, it was at a very, very sold out show at the tiny 7th Street Entry. This time around, the band will be playing at a much bigger capacity venue - First Avenue's mainroom.

Canadian indie folk outfit is out on tour in support of their latest album Mended With Gold... and for this tour, it's written that it will be more intimate with a mixture of new material and old favorites.

Opening up the show will be July Talk, an alt-blues rock group with a new debut US EP called Guns + Ammunition, out now on Island Records.
