It’s hard to believe that last Tuesday’s Alex Lahey show, at the 7th Street Entry, was her fourth time as headliner in the area.

Opening the show was Liza Anne, with her drummer friend Allie (Allie Cuva). Allie is actually a songwriter herself and have gone on tour as the opener for the Katy Kirby and Sun June show in Mar 2022. In the middle of Liza’s set, Allie took up the guitar and sang one of her songs, “Long Vacation.”

We previously saw Liza with Lucy Dacus in Oct 2019. She had a full band, back in 2019, and the band was clearly undressed for Minneapolis’ weather. There were no complaints at Tuesday’s show, so I’m assuming Liza came to Minneapolis prepared.

Songs on Liza’s set included “I Shouldn't Ghost My Therapist” and, my favorite, the ironic upbeat song “Cheerleader”, which ended her set… complete with a pair of pom poms.

As the Australian songwriter Alex Lahey confessed, she loves Minneapolis… but the first time that she came here in 25 November 2017, she had no idea this place (Minneapolis) existed… let alone people living here. The second time she came back, in 01 August 2018, she was treated so warmly that she now looks forward to play the city and make sure Minneapolis is on her tour itinerary.

Tuesday’s night was no exception, with many fans screaming as soon as Lahey took the stage. As you can see from the setlist, some songs were from her new album The Answer Is Always Yes (Liberation Records). She even played a couple of requests, “You’ll Never Get Your Money Back” and “Wes Anderson”. The latter is a love song about going to see a Wes Anderson film, “We went to the movies because I know you like Wes Anderson. You held my hand the whole time, and, no joke, you have the softest skin.”

Based on her fanbase and her love for Minneapolis, it won’t be long when Alex Lahey will be back in town.

Do you remember the viral song “The Wellerman”? The song was made famous by Nathan Evans on TikTok. Although the song is a traditional song, Evans probably heard it from Bristol-based a cappella musical group The Longest John, who recorded their version on their album Between Wind and Water. Lucy Dacus sold out the Cedar Cultural Center show, in Minneapolis, on Saturday, October 12th. Like Dacus’ last appearance at the Surly Brewing Festival in 2018, it’s an all-girls lineup.

First up was Austin’s Sun June with a brief 30-min set. The group (Laura, Michael, Justin, Sarah, Stephen) was selected as part of the official SXSW 2019 Showcase, after wowing them at the Audiotree and KVRX Library Sessions.

The band played some tracks from their debut record, Years, including their closing number, “Young”.

Next was Liza Anne (with full band of Josh on bass, Cody on drums, and Robbie on guitars), who could not get over at how cold it was in Minneapolis (it was randomly snowing throughout the day). The Nashville-based band only packed T-Shirts and jeans, so they were not prepared for the change in temperature.

They started their set with “Paranoia”, followed by “Small Talks”. Speaking of talks, Anne mentioned that the “I’m Tired, You’re Lonely” song is about how you shouldn’t talk when you’re tired or drunk (or both).

Richmond-based singer Lucy Dacus ended the all-women show, playing plenty of beloved songs. Fans loved it… but we already this was the case when we saw her headlined the sold-out 7th Street Entry in April 2018: “Still in her early twenties, Lucy Dacus is already showing a musical maturity, years beyond her actual age. The Richmond, VA singer-songwriter is touring in support of her second full-length, Historian (Matador Records), an album of leaps-and-bounds growth for her, that is the exact opposite of any sophomore slump and she seemed genuinely happy to be headlining here, after previously opening for Car Seat Headrest and Hamilton Leithauser. Dacus is so confident in the new album (considering it her definitive musical statement), the first seven songs played were all from the new record, beginning with single, ‘Addictions’. Her seemingly calm voice belies a building sound and lyrics that dive deep into wells of adversity, though provide a glimmer of hope in any darkness.”

After a successful 2018 tour, and meeting with other like-minded women singers, Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, they decided to form Boygenius (stylized as boygenius). While the supergroup is currently in hiatus, expect the three to get together when they record a debut LP. She didn’t play any boygenius songs, but with two critically acclaimed albums, No Burden and Historian, she really didn’t need to. Instead, she played a couple of cover songs, an Édith Piaf song, “La vie en rose” and Phil Collins’ signature song, “In The Air Tonight”. Both these covers were recorded and released as singles from Lucy Dacus in 2019. Based on other covers she’s released (like Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”), you might think there’ll be a cover-lover collection coming out soon.

Richmond-based singer Lucy Dacus is headlining the Cedar Cultural Center on October 12th. Dacus’ sophomore album Historian (Matador Records) is one of the most unanimously lauded ‘Best Albums of 2018’.

We last saw Dacus with Courtney Barnett, and Julien Baker, in July 2018 and mentioned, “Dacus seemed pretty pleased at the big crowd and thanked the audience for coming out early to see her. Then she apologized for not being Big Thief. Apparently Big Thief dropped out, so Dacus, who was already playing with Barnett and Baker for Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival 2018 the previous night, asked to “get in on this.””

The once-Minneapolis singer Lizzo is back and she’s more popular than ever. Her two-night residency at the Armory has sold out. We saw Lizzo in Feb 2016 and mentioned, “Lizzo is not a small girl. Her tagline is "Big GRRRL, Small World". She has curves and isn't afraid to show them off as she proved last night when she came out in a leotard type outfit with a jacket on top. She didn't care that her legs would jiggle as she danced. She made fun of people staring at her butt multiple times. She was beautiful and she was doing it, jiggle and all.”

Mt. Joy is back in town, this time playing the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis. We saw the band in October 2017 and said, “Los Angeles by way of Philadelphia alt-folk-rockers Mt. Joy opened the evening with a forty-five minute set of new songs that properly introduced the new band, and gave these many won-over fans a chance to hear the tracks, soon to appear on their upcoming debut.”
