Lætitia Sadier came to the 400 Bar in Minneapolis, last night, in support of her latest album, Silencio, out now via Drag City.
For those not familiar with Sadier, she is, or rather was, the main singer of Stereolab, a band from London. The band was mostly known for loungey keyboard pop sound with Sadier's distinctive French accent (either sung in French or English). While the band tour Australia in 2009, it would seem that the status of Stereolab is one of "indefinite hiatus."
Post-Stereolab, we saw Sadier with her debut solo release of The Trip (which you can see on the setlist that she did two "Ceci Est Le Coeur" and "Statues Can Bend" back to back), and, more recently, released Silencio.
I had a hard time understanding her English, so when she's singing (either in French or English), I had a harder time understanding what was being sung. Musically, her solo work seems more guitar-based, and a touch political bent to her songs (specially about democracy in her "Price for Freedom" song).
As expected, the majority of the set are songs from the new album, including "The Rule of the Game", "Between Earth And Heaven", "Find Me The Pulse of the Universe", "There Is a Price To Pay For Freedom (And It Isn't Security)", "Auscultation To the Nation", and "Silent Spot."
The odd-song-out was "Étoile", which closed out the set. The song is from her other French band Monade.
Encore had two songs: "Lightning Thunderbolt" and "Next Time You See Me", both from Silencio.
If were looking for loungepop/Stereolab songs, don't expect to find any at Lætitia Sadier's show. If you love Sadier's solo work, then you should definitely want to see her on tour to hear Silencio live. Sadier is currently on tour in support of the album, and her last North American appearance will be on October 11th in Nebraska, of all places.
