I remember seeing Toadies’s Rubberneck in the early 90s in comic books everywhere, thanks to Interscope Records’ advertisements. Sure, I may have listened to some of their singles, just to get an idea of what they sounded. It was just a little too hard rock/punk my music taste… but at least I was aware of the band for a long time.
After touring and opening for such acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bush, and White Zombie (Rob Zombie), the band called it quits in 2001 when original bassist Lisa Umbarger left the band.
When I heard that they reformed with a new album No Deliverance, I had the opportunity to see them play Station 4 in St Paul on October 21, 2008… but that meant we had to do some legwork with their opener, a Welsh band called People in Planes (previously known as Tetra Splendour and Robots in the Sky). They were signed to Wind-Up Records, who helped us get into the show and contact with singer Gareth “Gaz” Jones.

Station 4, in St Paul, was packed full of the Toadies’ fans, a mix of mid-thirty-somethings and young grungy kids last night, 10/21/08.
One of the opening bands, Year Long Disaster, did a great job warming up the crowd with their rock/metal music.
People in Planes came on at 9 and played a pretty good set, including mostly new songs from their latest album. They started off the show with "Last Man Standing", "Mayday (M'aidez)", "Pretty Buildings", in pretty much the order of their album.
They ended the set on a very high note with an all rock out version of "Vampires". That's actually my favorite People in Planes song, and the whole time I was hoping they would play it.
I got a chance to talk to Gaz after the show, and it seems like they are really homesick! Only a few weeks to go on their long-running US tour currently with The Toadies.
Check them out on if they're coming through town. They are heading to Nebraska right now. Their new album, Beyond The Horizon is out now on Wind-Up Records.
