Los Angeles alt-rock duo Loveless (Julian Comeau and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail) will headline the 7th Street Entry this October 1st. They have a pop, rock, emo sound, starting with their debut Loveless I... and speaking of debut, this is their “The Debut Live Experience” tour.

Futuristic, who appeared on Jimmy Fallon, Good Morning America, and Good Day New York, and had over 56 million streams with his collaboration with NF on Spotify, will open the show.

The long sold out, two years in the making, co-headlining New Order and Pet Shop Boys show will finally come to Minneapolis, at the Armory this October 2nd.

We mentioned the co-headlining show originally in July 2021:

The highly anticipated North American The Unity Tour by co-headliners Pet Shop Boys and New Order will be rescheduled to September and October 2022.

The good news is that this will give us enough time to add legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold to the upcoming 2022 tour.

If you follow our music tastes, you know that we’ve long love and support UK bands, so PSB and New Order are the top of the pops for us.

Pet Shop Boys’ fourteenth studio LP, Hotspot came out on x2 Records/Kobalt and reached #3 in the UK, #1 on German and Spanish albums chart, and #1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

New Order’s last album Music Complete came out in 2015, but it was recently re-issued for Love Record Stores day in 2020 as a doubly vinyl LP was pressed in orange vinyl and issued in a gatefold sleeve.

If you’re wondering why these two massive bands are friends… it’s probably due to their past collaborations, including the supergroup Electronic (featuring Bernard Sumner, Neil Tennant, and Johnny Marr)… they’re all old friends. Wish somehow they could get Johnny Marr to open for them, so they can all reunite to play out to some classic Electronic songs like “Getting Away with It”. Wouldn’t that just be exciting?

Well, this is no way to start the new year--

“Postponed” seems to be the word for many shows, no thanks to the Omicron variant and record-high infections, but the silver lining is most shows are being delayed and not completely canceled. 

Thankfully, a few events have carried on, including most comedy dates, and we could all use a good laugh at the moment.  Highlight of the month is undoubtedly the solid triple-bill with Kacey Musgraves, King Princess, and MUNA at T-Mobile Center and (as of this writing) the Elton John show there, scheduled for Feb 1 (after a July 2020 delay) is still on, so there’s plenty of hope and things to look forward to.  Stay safe!

Given the current public health state, assume masks and/or vaccination proof are required for entry.

Last month, Spoon shared their version of The Beatles 1967 fan club single “Christmas Time (Is Here Again)”, as part of the Spotify Singles: Holiday Edition 2021. The collection marks the fifth year of Spotify Singles: Holiday.

Frontman Britt Daniel says about the track, “Recording ‘Christmas Time (Is Here Again)’ was a group effort that pulled us away from rehearsals and quickly sent us down a turbulent path of what you might call the Christmas spirit. And it’s our song with the most band members doing vocals ever - pretty sure I’m counting four. THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS IS OVER.”

While we are at it, Spoon also announced the title of their forthcoming tenth studio album will be called Lucifer On the Sofa. The record will come out February 11th, 2022.

Ahead of their tour, Austin’s Black Pumas released their Christmas single, a cover of Lou Rawls’ “Christmas Will Really Be Christmas”. The song will be available as part of the Spotify Holiday Singles.

“We were really attracted to the message, the lyrics, the arrangement, the feeling,” frontman Eric Burton says. “It’s a message that needs to be heard right now. I was a little nervous about singing in Lou Rawls’ low register, so I sang it an octave higher and it was nice to arrange vocals with the ladies [backup singers Lauren Cervantes and Angela Miller] as well to put our own spin on it.”

Los Angeles’ Liily is currently touring in support of their debut record TV or Not TV. The band headlined the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on October 24th.

Opening the show was local band Birdhole, their first time playing the Entry.

The band started their set with “Let Me be Frank with You” intro, followed by “In Different Towns” and “Sleep”.

They had a few covers on their set, including Tegan & Sara’s “Hell” and Guided By Voices’ “Motor Away”.

They ended their set with a song they said was called “SPV”.

Liily is still a very new, but they they are very good and shows a lot of promise. Singer, Dylan Nash, reminds me of a stoic Ian Brown, while the band, guitarist Sam De La Torre, bassist Charlie Anastasis, and drummer Maxx Morando, plays post-punk, art-rock music. While the band didn’t mentioned their influences, I felt like they were inspired by a lot of UK-bands, as I hear sparks of The Fall and Gang of Four in their sound… which is a positive thing.

The best songs, “I Am Who You Think I Am”, “TV or Not TV” and “Wash” were played early in their set. The latter, I misheard as “walk it off” instead of “wash it off”… which had two very different meaning. They saved their hit single, “Toro” near the end of their brief set.

Again, the band is new, and I hope their music reach a wider audience. It’s not just the music, but it’s also the live performance that made Liily so exciting to experience.

Liily’s UK starts in November.

Canadian quartet Tokyo Police Club is celebrating their “10th Anniversary of CHAMP” tour… and will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on October 27. Funny enough, this is the third time the band have tried for this tour, having twice having to delay their Champ 10 tour, due to the pandemic.

Yes, you all know how much I love Sleeper. The 90s band reformed in 2017, and I’ve been keeping a very close on an all-things Sleeper.

If you haven’t been keeping up, I’ll help you catch up. After the 2017 initial tour, the band announced they were recording a fourth studio album (recording at Metway Studio and mixed & mastered at Metropolis Studio) in September 2018. Currently, we know that the new album will be called The Modern Age and is produced by Stephen Street and John Davis, both men are masters at their craft.

Today, on Steve Lamacq’s show, he played their new single, “Look At You Now”. If you don’t have VPN or a BBC TV license, you can listen to the song via Spotify (note: US accounts will not work).

Sleeper may or may not be playing that song in the upcoming 6 Music’s All Day Christmas Party, in London on 14 Dec 2018.

In a recent Edison's annual audio report "The Infinite Dial", Pandora is miles ahead of their competition for the most popular music streaming service in the United States.

I'm really shocked at these numbers because (and maybe it's because of my small circle of friends), but I do not know anyone that uses Pandora on a regular basis. I personally do not use Pandora, and just really puzzled at these incredible numbers.

Here is an informal, quick survey of W♥M writers and what they use:

I knew Pandora was popular in the USA, I just didn't realise they were that popular. Pandora has been around for a lot longer than Spotify and an age longer than iTunes Radio. Very popular with people aged 12-24 and popular with people aged 25-54. I think it'll be a different story if the global usage was taken into account.

Angela writes:

Pandora is the worst of them all. It doesn't given you the options that the other ones do. For me, it's simply a competition between Spotify and Google Play, and I'm choosing Google right now.

Justina confessed:

I use Pandora, Spotify, and sometimes iTunes. I've heard good things about Google Play though.

John uses:

Spotify mostly for me. Pandora is decent too, but I probably just go to Spotify more.

Emily hit it home:

For about 2-3 years, Pandora was the go-to music spot, especially when Dan and I hung out with friends. Then I discovered GrooveShark, which allows you to select specific music instead of a random playlist. Basically if I didn't have my ipod or stereo around and I wanted to listen to something very specific, I used GrooveShark. Pandora is a great service, but I got tired of their selections; they can be very limited and you won't always hear what you really want to hear. GrooveShark delivers this, however, not without its own set of challenges - namely, spyware, bogging down the page with its ads, etc.

I don't use either one very much anymore, to be honest. I'll check out streams on band websites or sites like bandcamp or RCRD LBL even NPR and often I use YouTube. But nothing really beyond that. The fact that Pandora is still wildly popular confuses me too.

Roku vs WD TV Play vs Apple TV: FIGHT!

As you know, I'm always looking for 'the next thing' when it comes to watching my video content on the big screen at home. I was rather disappointed in Sony Media Streaming for $50. After Sony updated their software, it now supports H.264 streaming - but it's very slow. The box often delay playing by pre-downloading content via DLNA and can take up to 3 minutes to play back a 720p file.

With these streaming media boxes, you can listen to Pandora, MOG, Spotify, or local music (via DLNA or AirPlay).

Anyway, Western Digital just entered into the market for streaming media box, which is a natural evolution from their already-established WD TV player (Play now supports YouTube and Vudu, etc). So how does it stack up against their competitors? I've put together a checklist of things I'm interested in (Amazon Prime, DLNA support, YouTube…), everything else I don't really care about.

NOTE: Flixster (Ultraviolet) is compatible with VUDU if you link your two accounts together. What that means is movies you own on UV can be accessed on Vudu - unless there are rights issues (some movies are exclusive to Vudu or vice-versa). For the most part, I'm lumping Flixster and Vudu together as one item.

So here's the breakdown: WD TV is the only one that supports DLNA. Apple TV is the only one that supports iTunes purchased movies and "Air Play", but if you don't live in the Apple Universe, a workaround is with UltraViolet (via Flixster or Vudu). You can read more about UltraViolet here.

Note: Roku 2 is the only box that works with Amazon Prime, but I'm sure Amazon will eventually make their way to WD. Roku 2 also doesn't really play local content (it doesn't even support AVI) and what kind of box doesn't support YouTube???

Based on the $70 retail price and its functionality, at least to me, it seems like my next streaming box that I will purchase. The LEAST attractive box is the Apple TV… but it does support their iTunes ecosystem, and for some people, that's really all that matters. I believe, looking at the trends, that Apple TV will introduce a new product that will ultimately support "apps" based on their iPad iOS apps.

Currently, the only media box that does it all is my PS3, which I'm quite happy with - but there is a huge $300 price to entry that is off putting to most people. PS3 is the only machine that plays Blu-Ray, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Hulu Plus… and because the hardware was built for games - it's so much smoother and faster than any stand-alone box I've played around with. If you are thinking about getting an Xbox instead: don't bother. Nothing will work unless you pay Microsoft an extra $80 a year for their so-called "Gold" service. Imagine paying extra to access YouTube, you fanboys love it.

As you know, I am one of those rare people that dislike Spotify. The problem with free version of Spotify is that you're tied to your computer. Most people listen to music on their mobile device, such as a modern phone.

If you have a Nokia Lumia phone, the good news is that you can get Nokia Music, an advertisement-free. Also, an added perk is that it doesn't require you to sign in, it is complete free, unlimited plays, and best of all, you can listen to it offline. I don't actually have a Nokia phone, but reading about Nokia Music, I really want to switch phones just to check out this service.

Recently Nokia Music announced a new music documentary series, featuring six short films about the music landscape in six cities from independent directors Abteen Bagheri, Emily Kai Bok, Bob Harlow and Tyrone Lebon.

Jyrki Rosenberg, Global Head and VP, Nokia Entertainment had this to say about the upcoming project, "Music has always inspired various forms of pop culture and since music and film have always gone hand in hand, the idea to produce a music documentary came naturally. We are also excited to work with these emerging filmmakers and see America's different music scenes through their eyes. We look forward to shedding some light on music communities that are rarely put in the spotlight."

Look for the Nokia Music documentaries to air on Sundance Channel in January 2013.

It used to be cheaper, but then the Canadians ruined it.
