New York’s
Diet Cig headlined the 7th Street Entry last week, their first-ever Minneapolis appearance.
The turnout for Monday was actually very, very good. Fans turned out to see what all the buzz about, and were generally entertained and impressed by opener Philadelphia’s
Sports... who played some tracks from their
All of Something record.
Diet Cig started their set with ‘Blob Zombie’, a song about not wanting to get out of bed and also served as the theme and title of their debut album
Swear I’m Good At This (Frenchkiss Records).
Drummer Noah Bowman kept in rhythm and out of the spotlight, which was just fine as singer/guitarist Alex Luciano was clearly the center of attention as she kicked and danced and drum-stand her way to our hearts.
The band is still very young, and as expected, played most of their debut (and throwing in ‘Breathless’ from a previous
Over Easy EP), resulting in only a barely 45-min set (with no encores). You know that when they come back (and they will), that they’ll have more songs under their belt.
Before ‘Dinner Date’, Luciano tells us that the two of them spent the day at the Mall of America and based on the way she said it, it sounded like she absolutely loves the giant mall. For those who haven’t been to MoA, there is an impressive indoor rollercoaster / amusement park in the center of the mall.
A couple of “tender” songs were played between the more upbeat songs. I got a feeling that songs like ‘Apricots’ (played after their single ‘Scene Sick’) and ‘Bath Bomb’ aren’t played very often, as they’re slower songs, but it was a real treat for fans who listened to the album in the solitary of their room. These songs show that Luciano isn’t all about the crazy energy and kicks, that they can write really sensitive heartfelt songs.
Recently, Amazon Music showcased Diet Cig’s ‘Together We Can Conquer Whatever’, an original song from the upcoming Amazon Original Special,
American Girl – Summer Camp, Friends for Life. Starting June 9, the Amazon Music Original song will be available exclusively to download and stream on Amazon Music—both Amazon Music Unlimited and Prime Music.
