Merge Records recently announced that they will be reissuing A Giant Dog’s first two albums, Fight and Bone on limited-edition colored vinyl. Those records inspired bands like Spoon’s Britt Daniel, who called them “the greatest American rock and roll / punk band since I don’t know when.”

We know about the band through the very entertaining Sabrina Ellis’ project Sweet Spirit and their connection to Har Mar Superstar.

Well it looks like the band is back together again, and they’re heading out on tour. There’s a 90% chance that Har Mar Superstar will be at the upcoming Amsterdam show on August 20th.

Minneapolis singer/songwriter Chastity Brown is headlining First Avenue on August 20 to support her new album Sing To The Walls (Red House Records).

The singer talked about the long journey to finish the new record:

This record was started in Sweden, and completed in Minneapolis. It’s been made and remade many times over, but ultimately is my audacious expression of black joy and love in response to uprising, confrontation, and pandemic.

Local indie-pop Hippo Campus is ending their national tour with a headlining show at the Armory in Minneapolis on April 23rd. Their latest album LP3 is out now via Grand Jury.

The group will rest for a week before embarking on their UK/EU headline tour in May 2022.

We last saw the band live at First Avenue on 12 Mar 2017 and wrote, “The buzz for Hippo Campus at their homecoming show was simply amazing. As soon as the band took the stage, a hundred cellphones went up in the air to record every moment of the band. The audience was generally young teenagers, but that is expected for a semi-rare all-ages weekend show at First Avenue.”

Connecticut rockers Goose is continuing their tour in 2022. You can catch them live this upcoming Feb 9 at First Avenue in Minneapolis.

Faced with the challenges of a COVID-19 world, the band hosted Goosemas on the roof of Rockefeller Center and livestreamed exclusively on Twitch, which drew in over 60,000 viewers worldwide, and raised $45,000 for Conscious Alliance and Save Our Stages.

Last month, Spoon shared their version of The Beatles 1967 fan club single “Christmas Time (Is Here Again)”, as part of the Spotify Singles: Holiday Edition 2021. The collection marks the fifth year of Spotify Singles: Holiday.

Frontman Britt Daniel says about the track, “Recording ‘Christmas Time (Is Here Again)’ was a group effort that pulled us away from rehearsals and quickly sent us down a turbulent path of what you might call the Christmas spirit. And it’s our song with the most band members doing vocals ever - pretty sure I’m counting four. THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS IS OVER.”

While we are at it, Spoon also announced the title of their forthcoming tenth studio album will be called Lucifer On the Sofa. The record will come out February 11th, 2022.

Ahead of their tour, Austin’s Black Pumas released their Christmas single, a cover of Lou Rawls’ “Christmas Will Really Be Christmas”. The song will be available as part of the Spotify Holiday Singles.

“We were really attracted to the message, the lyrics, the arrangement, the feeling,” frontman Eric Burton says. “It’s a message that needs to be heard right now. I was a little nervous about singing in Lou Rawls’ low register, so I sang it an octave higher and it was nice to arrange vocals with the ladies [backup singers Lauren Cervantes and Angela Miller] as well to put our own spin on it.”

The truth is, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Anime-loving singer/songwriter Matthew Sweet since I heard his breakout hit single “Girlfriend.” Sweet was my very first concert in 1991, at the Cadillac Club (long defunct) in Fresno, California. I was still in high school and still love and know all of the lyrics from Sweet’s albums and EPs pre-Son of Altered Beast.

Sweet is back in town in support of his 13th studio album Tomorrow’s Daughter (the follow-up to Tomorrow Forever), available via Honeycomb Hideout and MRI/Sony.

It’s the hottest ticket in town: Spoon and Grizzly Bear is playing Surly Festival Field this Saturday.

Grizzly Bear’s latest Painted Ruins is available now via RCA Records. The album has earned widespread praise from the New York Times, NPR Music and GQ, who commended the band’s “strikingly gorgeous music and harmonies”, while Esquire called the record “Their most mature album yet.”

We caught Spoon in Sep 2017 and said, “Following a break, rolling fog crept in under dim mono-chromatic lighting (with occasional strobe lights) and five louvered panels behind a set of scalloped curtains, to set the stage for Spoon’s hundred-minute headlining set. An extended instrumental intro for the opening ‘Do I Have to Talk You Into It’ brought the band members up one by one in the near darkness, making it look like they were performing from inside the mothership from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Who knew Spoon could be so space rock?!

The Austin, TX band pulled into The Palace Theatre in St. Paul for the first of two long sold-out shows, to a crowd strong enough for singer Britt Daniel to consider this their second hometown.

Before that, Chicago indie garage rock band Twin Peaks took advantage of their name being back in the news (compliments of the recently-resurrected David Lynch TV series of the same name) to open with a raucous 45 min. set.  The quintet (three of the five rotated on lead vocals this night) is out in support of last year’s Down in Heaven (Grand Jury Records) and emerged, beers in hand, ready to have a good time.

The opening ‘Butterfly’ (from the new album) was written as co-vocalist Clay Frankel found himself in a “sickened state”, ‘Boomers’ was a catchy song “about psychedelic drugs and the experiences that come with it” and had trippy light patterns to accompany it, and the closing ‘Strawberry Smoothie’ from 2014 had the chugging rhythms and endearing sloppiness of classic Replacements or Stooges songs.

The new album, Hot Thoughts (released in March) finds the band back in friendly confines of Matador Records, a place they first called home with their 1996 debut. The group more than ever seems to enjoy taking their time with the songs now, stretching several out with appropriate instrumental passages and keeping things visually mostly dark and mysterious, with newest member Alex Fischel (keys, guitar) already taking on a prominent role.

“St. Paul, good to see you!” Daniel greeted the crowd, already on the band’s side as their local following seems to grow stronger with every show.  Daniel couldn’t remember the last time the band played St. Paul, having mostly played across the river in more recent years and didn’t re-visit anything from their first four albums this night (though the next would get a couple extra songs).

Bassist Rob Pope and drummer Jim Eno remain the band’s secret weapons, holding down the foundation of each song without much fanfare but a surety that allows Daniel to get creative when the mood hits.  The interlude ‘Via Kannela’ featuring keyboardist Fischel really seemed like they were channeling alien rhythms or preparing to launch leading into the new ‘I Ain’t the One’, a moody slow number about the moon rising and the night coming knocking.

Daniel thanked local station The Current mid-set, for being one of the earliest stations to play their music and the lyric of 2007’s ‘Don't Make Me a Target’ resonated again with today’s current events.  ‘The Underdog’ found everyone clapping along to Pope’s bass beat, 2009’s ‘Got Nuffin’ churned like an out of control freight train, and the stories told in the main set closing ‘Black Like Me’ still seem poignant a decade later.

Daniel emerged solo to begin the four-song encore with a spare ‘I Summon You’ with its bracing first lyric, “'Remember the weight of the world, it's the sound we used to buy”. The new ‘Pink Up’ followed, bringing back out the band, an extended jam with steel drum sounds against synths and dance beats, with rhythms again at the forefront for the title track of the new album.

The band went back to its previous album one last time for the evening’s closer of ‘Rent I Pay’, Daniel exclaiming “Twin Cities, you look beautiful!” as the song grew in volume with the band taking the song to the highest crescendo of the night, perhaps giving that star ship enough energy to launch off, and return again for the next night’s sold-out show.

With producer Dave (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) Fridmann behind the boards of the latest album, the controls were already set for the heart of the sun, and Spoon proves it can still musically evolve after more than two decades in the business, happily strapping the rest of us on the side of their rocket as they hurdle off into the stars.

The first time I was meant to see Widowspeak, it was supposed to be in June 2012... but their van broke down driving from Chicago to Minneapolis. I eventually caught the Brooklyn band as headliner at the 7th Street in October of that year.

We caught Dan Croll in November 2016 and noted, “UK folktronic singer-songwriter Dan Croll (who is one to watch as well) opened the evening with a criminally short but enjoyable thirty-five minute set of songs from his 2014 full length Sweet Disarray (Deram Records/Universal) as well as some new music set to appear on his next album.”

That “next album” is called Emerging Adulthood and it’s out now on Communion Group Ltd. Croll is touring in support of the new album and will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul this Saturday.

Sleepwalkers' debut album Greenwood Shade is out now. .… Thundercat Thundercat Look, I love the ThunderCats cartoon (I own all the DVDs)... so I'm always hesitant when a band named themselves after something I love. To be fair, the Arctic Cat … The Flaming Lips I think this was my first time seeing The Flaming Lips, but I could be wrong. Seems odd that this was "a very special Early Evening performance", since the band's psychedelic/space rock seems to work better at night …

Papercuts w/ Skygreen Leopards

When I think about papercuts, I think about licking envelopes and cutting my tongue. It's painful, and it's not a good thought. Hopefully San Francisco's Papercuts is not as unpleasant.

Papercuts is the stagename for singer/songwriter/producer Jason Quever, who is currently on tour in support of his latest album Life Among the Savages (Easy Sound / Memphis Industries).

Opening up will be California psych-pop duo Skygreen Leopards, who is currently on tour with Woods. Skygreen Leopards' latest album Family Crimes came out earlier this summer via Woodsist.

The Bots

We previously mentioned that The Bots were two brothers, Mikaiah Lei (lead vocal, guitar, bass) and Anaiah Lei (drums & percussions, backing vocal), and noted that they were really young (at the time Anaiah was 16).

The Bots are touring the Midwest around Riotfest, and will be stopping by Minneapolis at the Nether Bar (inside Mill City Nights), in support of their forthcoming album Pink Palms, set for release October 14th via FADER Label.

Opening up the show are The Picturebooks, described as a new band, the blues-rock duo (Fynn & Philipp). Noisey recently debuted the band’s video for "Your Kisses Burn Like Fire" and said it makes you want to buy a motorcycle and disappear into the desert. The Picturebooks will be showcasing some songs from their forthcoming album Imaginary Horse, due out October 7th.

Mark your calendar, one of my favorite band Shonen Knife will be playing their 1,000th show at the Turf Club in Saint Paul on September 16th. What an achievement, and, as a bonus, they are taking fan requests. If I can get them to play "Riding the Rocket" or their cover of the Carpenters' "Top of the World", I'll be happy.

Coverage continues on our second day at the Walker Art Center for the Two-Day Rock the Garden Festival.

Skies grayed, thunder rumbled, and a light rain fell as Memphis-based singer-songwriter Valerie June took the stage to open Day Two, in support of her acclaimed Pushin’ Against a Stone (Concord Music). Now a trio, as opposed to her previous solo visit to town, the laid back Southern drawl of ‘Tennessee Time’ and ‘Somebody to Love’ was an ideal musical hangover cure to get everyone back in the mood for another day of varied sounds.

With Medusa-like hair and banjo-plucking skills, she declared, “We’re going to send the rain away” and did so, appropriately during ‘Rain Dance.’  Blues classic ‘Rollin and Tumblin’ was segued into her own ‘Workin’ Woman Blues’ and the gospel-flavored ‘This World’ ended the set, perfectly setting the table for the day ahead.

Kurt Vile and the Violators-

Though he looks like he could be guitarist for Megadeth, there is a subtle power to former War on Drugs member Kurt Vile.  He and his Violators (multi-instrumentalists Jesse Trbovich and Rob Laakso, with drummer Kyle Spence) plodded through a careful and building set of songs, in support of recent solo efforts, Wakin’ on a Pretty Daze and the EP, It's a Big World Out There (And I Am Scared) (on Matador Records).

Vile himself plays with an almost introverted style, often staring down at his own guitar, long hair shielding any glimpse of his face.  After quoting Willy Wonka, a fan shouted for a Willy Wonka cover, to which Vile replied, “…charming”. The psychedelics and feedback continued to increase as the set progressed, but Vile chose to downshift at the end, with a quiet and soft ‘Dead Alive’ to a hushed crowd.

Dessa-

In an hour-long riveting hometown performance, poet / rapper / TV host / author / Doomtree member, etc. Dessa showed the love back to the local crowd that was already in the palm of her hand, even before her first verse.  Darting and moving like a boxer, she played with the ability to see her own giant-sized face on the screens; would dive into the audience; throw a tub of gelato into the crowd in a cathartic gesture that recalled her food sampling days handing out the dessert at Whole Foods; and late in the set,, serenaded the crowd, jumping from the stage to walk from the pit to the soundboard and back.

Having Aby Wolf sing harmonies and trade verses was one of the smartest band decisions she’s made, and fellow Doomtree member Cecil Otter, spit fire, guesting on ‘Little Mercy’.This was a very tight and athletic-like performance, backed by her crack local band, which enhanced the often intense lyrics of songs like ‘Call Off Your Ghost’ and hit, ‘Dixon’s Girl’. ‘Dixon’s’ , played late in the set, especially pleased a young girl in the crowd middle, atop her father’s shoulder, holding a sign with the song’s title on it.

“Lizzo isn’t my competition…”, Dessa would remark, dispelling any rumors of such, “…time is. Laundry is my competition.” More than a local performance, Dessa was triumphant in front of the audience that has supported her and her Doomtree collective for so long, as she would mention with gratitude.

Guided by Voices-

GBV with Mark Wheat

Current DJ Mark Wheat went on-stage to intro the legendary Guided by Voices, but first gave the crowd a score update to the US game of the World Cup.  This led into chants of “USA, USA”, which in turn, morphed into even louder chants of “GBV, GBV”.  Bob Pollard and crew then took to the stage, armed with literally thousands of possible songs they could do, “We’re going to do 24 songs for you”, Pollard said …they did 25.

“More bang for your buck”, and after a crew member had taped down Pollard’s mic further, so it wouldn’t dislodge from his swinging, the band put pedal to the metal and was off down their musical, devil-may-care road.

Guided by Voices

The 56-year old white haired singer was amazingly spry during their hour-long set, kicking his leg to touch his hand, jumping about, and prowling from end-to-end on stage.  By contrast, guitarists Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell were rock steady, with Mitchell looking ever deadpan with a lingering cigarette butt, dangling from his lip.  Bassist Greg Demos moved about in the background, striking poses with bass held high, everyone keeping up with Pollard and his resistance to even pause too long to take a breath.

New album, Bee Thousand (Scat Records) songs were mixed into the set, alongside older favorites like the Rick Ocasek-produced “Teenage FBI’, “we worked with the big boys”, Pollard would comment about The Cars singer.  Pollard even slighted local legend Paul Westerberg, saying they’ve played here some twenty times, and had yet to get a glimpse of the somewhat reclusive Replacements leader.

Spoon-

Britt Daniel

“I’m not gonna say where we were last night (ed. note: it was Toronto)… but it wasn’t this good”, Spoon’s singer Britt Daniel confessed to an enthusiastic crowd early in their 75 min. set.  Starting with new songs from their upcoming They Want My Soul (out August 5 on Loma Vista/Republic), the audience was among the first to hear many of the new and yet-to-be-released songs live, which made the clear Sunday evening, seem even more special.

2007 breakthrough album album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge Records) was well-represented as well in this abbreviated set, though at the expense of 2010 album, Transference, as I especially missed the inclusion of ‘Written in Reverse’. Daniel, Jim Eno (drums), and band didn’t say a lot to the crowd, carrying on with a confident mix of songs old and new to an already-convinced audience.

An extra boost of energy was provided by Brooklyn band White Rabbits’ guitarist/percussionist Steve Patterson, who was ably filling in for Rob Pope, whose wife was due with child.  Daniel had first met White Rabbits in Minneapolis and went on to produce on of their albums, so the chemistry between Patterson and band seemed natural and unforced.  Daniel’s voice and guitar work moved from elegance to fierceness almost on a coin-flip, and the songs on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga received the most enthusiastic response.

A three-song encore closed the night and festival, highlighted by ‘You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb’, which was great to hear within earshot of the famous Oldenburg Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture in the adjoining garden. For the faithful, Spoon returns to town with a downtown theater show in mid-September.
