The new double-CD, double-LP, double cassettes (yes, you heard right), will feature the original classic album, plus bonus tracks and B-Sides, along with previously unreleased live recordings from the Virgin Records archive. The band said, “The ‘Spiceworld’ era was such a fun time for us; we’d just had a number one album with Spice, we were travelling all over the world and meeting our amazing fans, we released our second album AND we had our very own movie! Who would’ve thought it? It’s crazy to think that 25 years have passed.” The album came out at the height of `Spicemania’ and one month ahead of the all-girls band’s big screen debut film, Spice World: The Movie. The record spent almost one year in the Top 40 on the U.K. chart and had the #1 hit singles, “Spice Up Your Life,” “Too Much,” and “Viva Forever,” and fan-favorite “Stop.” Like many of the 14 million Spiceworld owners, such as myself, you’re probably not interested in owning the album again (especially since the Spice Girls re-released Spiceworld on vinyl in 2020). Instead, you should focus on the second, bonus CD, which includes a variety of mixes, B-Sides, demos, and live recordings. The recordings are from the soundboard mix, so they are broadcast-quality and sounds amazing. Much better than any bootlegs you may or may not have. Can’t decide which songs to put on? Try “Spice Girls Party Mix”, which is a nearly 15-minute medley of your favorite Spice Girls songs. For the diehard fans who has it all, there are a few live tracks exclusive to this release… but I believe the main attraction is the rare “Step To Me” (Demo Version), which is exclusive to Spiceworld 25. Dora shares, “I wrote ‘Bump’ when I was living in Poland & for the first time in my life I didn’t really know anyone in that city except for the family I was staying with so I wasn’t bumping into people I knew anywhere. This song felt like a prayer to encounter a meaningful coincidence & eventually it began happening, not with people I knew, but I would see images from dreams manifest in real life, and it sparked this feeling that life had been waiting for me to take note of all the little details because they are leading me somewhere. I drank a lot of black tea with family during this time & became obsessed with teapots. I had an image in my brain of a long human with teapot feet.”

Everybody’s favorite best-selling Girl Power 90s female group, Spice Girls, recently re-released Spiceworld and The Greatest Hits on vinyl via UMe/Virgin EMI.

This would have been the perfect gift and perfect timing for your mother in Mother’s Days (UK)… but unfortunately, the outbreak of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 hit the country and basically put the world in self-isolation.

Fortunately, if you pre-ordered the vinyls or bought them on digital, you can still enjoy the Spice Girls’ wonderfully catchy, upbeat songs.

I got a chance to take a listen to a digital review copy, and it’s a little fun to re-visit these classic pop songs. The other thing I’ve gotten is that everyone in the group had a voice, from Scary to Sporty to Baby to Posh to Ginger. Everyone had their favorite Spice, mine was always Sporty (who eventually released some solo music under her name Melanie C).

It’s been many, many years since I listened to the Spice Girls, but I can tell, looking over the tracklisting that clearly the better value is The Greatest Hits, which contains their best-known hit (at least in the USA), “Wannabe”, and also the best of Spiceworld, including the singalong fun song, “Stop”. So if you’re a casual fan, The Greatest Hits is your best option.

If you’re more interested in the variety mix of music genre, then Spiceworld is a little more diverse. This includes a techno-ish ditty called “Never Give Up On The Good Times” and jazzy “The Lady Is A Vamp” and the doo-woppy “Too Much”. Plus, it does contain the well-known hits like “Spice Up Your Life” and “Too Much”.

The 2012 London Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony

Did you catch NBC's broadcast of the closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympic Games? We saw some of it last Sunday, and according to news reports, it was one of NBC's highest ratings (up 32% over the Beijing Games!)

Unlike NBC's clumsy attempt at censoring the opening ceremonies, it looks like they caved in to heavy criticisms and decided to air the closing music in its entirety.

The Closing Ceremony features a good wide range of British music. Personally, I was rather excited to see Pet Shop Boys doing their big hit song, "West End Girls," and the Spice Girls re-united again to do a medley of "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life." Pop fans would note Take That and One Direction.

As much as I love Oasis, we got Beady Eye doing "Wonderwall." I got the impression that Liam didn't want to do a Noel Gallagher song, and they certainly made sure everyone knew they were 'Beady Eye,' not Oasis.

It was also a shame that Blur didn't make on the lineup (instead, they were playing over at BT London Hydepark), but Massed Bands of the Guards Division covered them with "Parklife." To me, "Parklife" is the quintessential Britpop song - that and Pulp's "Disco 2000" (which sadly no mention of Pulp or Jarvis Cocker.)

I also enjoyed the epic "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," by Eric Idle - but couldn't they get the rest of Monty Python back together?

If you missed the Closing Ceremony, I'm certain you can buy the music compilation soon-ish. Already, you can pick up a double-disc of Isles Of Wonder: Music For The Opening Ceremony Of The London 2012 Olympic Games via Decca Recordings.

The compilation features Underworld, Dizzee Rascal, Emeli Sandé, Arctic Monkeys, Chemical Brothers, David Bowie, and more.

As I previously mentioned, I love Pet Shop Boys, and I have some news on them. They have a brand new album, Elysium, coming out on Astralwerks on September 11th.

If you can't wait that long, the first single, "Winner" is available on two digital bundles. The first will came out August 7th with three non-album b-sides (including a cover of the Bee Gees' "I Started A Joke") and the second is today (August 14th.)
