Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards stopped by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on September 9th, 2021, as part of her tour for Total Freedom (Dualtone Records).
Although the show was billed with Irish singer and songwriter Mick Flannery, it really should be listed as Mick Flannery and Susan O’Neill, as the duo played mostly songs from their collaboration album, In the Game… which “was just released a few hours ago,” announced O’Neill. They were quite proud of the record, and it shows as they perform the songs live with love.
Just to give a little background on Susan O’Neill, she started as a performer with Ennis Brass Band, and later with Irish dance group/band King Kong Company, and released music under her acronym SON.
O’Neill collaborated with award-winning, double-platinum selling artist Mick Flannery, to produce the 2020 single “Baby Talk,” which won “Best Original Song of The Year” at the prestigious RTÉ Radio 1 Awards and has racked up nearly 1 million streams to date.
The duo continued the formula and worked on In The Game, written and recorded over the summer of 2020 during lock-down between Cork, Ireland, and Los Angeles.
O’Neill mostly sang and harmonize, but sometime would pull out a trumpet (for “Are We Free?”) or bust out a harmonica (for “Freedom”). Flannery held his own with the keyboard and told stories about their songs.
Flannery seemed lost in the music and when he realized the time, he abruptly announced that “undoubtedly this is our last song,” as they ended their brief 30-minute set with “Love You Like I Love You”.
It’s been 13 years since we last saw Kathleen Edwards, during her promotional tour for Asking for Flowers. .. this is mostly because Edwards quit music in 2014 to concentrate on running a coffee house in called Quitters. She insisted that she didn’t “quit”, but that she’s just taking a break from music and that the name was mostly “tongue-in-cheek”.
So eight long years after her last album Voyageur, Edwards came back with her album Total Freedom.
A lot of things have changed since we last saw her in 2008, apparently she’s no longer married to guitarist Colin Cripps. Based on the fact that Cripps is part of her current touring band, the two are still good friends. In fact, after “Options Open” was played, Edwards joked, “I used to be married to that guy... Funny how after we divorce, suddenly he doubles his appearance fees!”
With strict COVID-19 precaution and lack of promotion for the new record, Edwards was still pleased at the turnout. She smiled and said, “Well look at that! You guys f***** showed up!”
It’s been a long time, but it’s good to have Kathleen Edwards back, foul mouth and all.
