Last week Austin, TX based band Snowden made a stop at the Sound Gallery on their No One In Control Tour for their newly released album No One In Control (Serpents and Snakes Records; The Kings of Leon’s record label). Local band Story of the Sea opened the show.

STORY OF THE SEA

The night started out in the social area of the Sound Gallery, while Story of the Sea getting set up in the next room of the loft style venue. Once everyone was ushered into the concert area of the venue the 3 member band made up of Adam Prince (guitar/lead vocals), John McEwen (bass/keyboards/vocals), and Ian Prince (drums) began playing their 10 song set. Soon after they completed their set, everyone eventually went back to the social area.

Up next was the headliner Snowden, the band formed in 2003. They played a 11 song set to a happily awaiting intimate crowd. Their gloomy, punk rock sound filled the room. No One in Control is Snowden’s second release; their previous being Anti-Anti (Jade Tree Records) released in 2006.

The band concluded their No One In Control Tour just this past Thursday (6/27).

For those of you who are fans of both folk and hip hop, look no further than the unlikely duo of Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock, writing music as The Uncluded. They will bring their unique fusion of both genres to Minneapolis on June 30 at the Cedar Cultural Center.

I didn't quite know what to expect upon my first listen of their debut album 'Hokey Fright', but I can attest to the fact that the coupling of the two musicians is very effective in its artistic goal. Aesop's rapid-fire spitting of clever rhymes mixed with Dawson's vocals showcasing her whimsical lyrical take on storytelling, as well as her homespun flavor of guitar stylings, is enough to intrigue me to want to see them live. Surely they are doing something completely new and fresh and I do not think they will disappoint. Give the album a listen and buy a ticket here for $15.

Remember Eve? She was the only woman in Ruff Ryders' crew (featuring DMX, The Lox and Drag-on), Eve stood tall with the boys. She went on to win a Grammy and who sold over eight million copies of her first three albums.

Well, over ten years later, she's just released her fourth album, Lip Lock, today, June 3rd, 2013 (I believe this is the UK release date, the US release was last month in May).

When asked about why she chose that name for the album, she said, "I call the new record Lip Lock because it's about locking the game back down." She went on to talk about her life and situation now, "I'm not trying to relive any moments of my life, I'm in a new place in my life. I'm almost a new artist - 2013 is a year you will see more sides of me than ever before, this is just the start!".

Also: Eve will host Lovedough this Friday, June 7th, in London.

It's reported that in some areas that more than three feet of snow are on the ground ("with more to come")! "When the City Lights Dim" is the new single from Cold Specks (lead by Al Spx), which is coming out March 5th, 2013, via Mute Records. The track is taken from last year's debut album, I Predict A Graceful Expulsion, from this Canadian singer/songwriter.

The album was a short-list for Canada’s Polaris Prize and was eMusic’s highest praise as the #1 Album of 2012.

I've seen Snowden twice. The first time, there was this huge blizzard in Minneapolis and then the second time for free because the headliner pulled out at the last minute. Snowden decided to continue on with the show.

The band is heading back to Minneapolis as part of their mid-to-late February tour and may preview some songs from their upcoming album, No One In Control, which will be released by Kings of Leon's record label, Serpents and Snakes.

The truth is, The Zombies needs no introduction, judging from the feedback on the Zombies' two most famous songs "She's Not There" and "Time of the Season". What people aren't aware of is that the band is still around, released an album May 26^th called The Zombies And Beyond. I don't have the new album, but it looks like a greatest hits and, er, "beyond".

 

 

The Zombies - She's Not There

The Zombies was part of that "British Invasion", lead by The Beatles in 1960. Their first hit single was "She's Not There", followed by "Leave Me Be" (not charted) and "Tell Her No".

I thought I read somewhere that they are also going on tour this Summer to celebrate the 40^th anniversary of Odessey and Oracle, originally released in 1968. Although this album feature the massive hit "Time of the Season", the album actually charted pretty poorly in the US Billboard chart (at #95). I believe the main reason for this was because the band had broken up in '68 and there wasn't any major promotional push for the album. Still, the single did amazingly well on radio in both the UK and the US.

Although the band re-formed with different members (usually fronted by singer/songwriter Rod Argent), but it wasn't until 2008 that all the surviving members returned to the stage as The Zombies. Paul Atkinson, the original guitarist, died in 2004 due to liver and kidney disease.

So if you're a fan of the Zombies, look for them on tour (they're doing a few dates with Jefferson Starship) and, of course, they'll be performing their big hits from the 60s.

Trivia: "odyssey" had been misspelled by the cover designers and the band were reportedly "deeply embarrassed".

Snowden

The last time I saw Snowden, it was at the Triple Rock Social and it was a very snowed-in day. It was kind of ironic that their name sounds like "snowed-in", yet the Atlanta, Georgia-based band exclaimed that they've never experienced snow like this before. Welcome to Minnesota!

That was only a few months ago, but now they're back, supporting Kings of Leon. Unfortunately, KoL canceled their appearance because they were sick (drugs or booze, you decide!), so suddenly Snowden is now the main and only act.

Since they only have an album and an EP (you can download 83% of the EP off their website), they played the majority of it for a little over an hour.

The highlight of the show was that they did a Zombies and a Neil Young song. I asked Jordan why they decided on those two covers and he said that the Zombies are the greatest band ever and that Neil Young was such a Rock n Roll song.
