What do we have here...
Celebrity Chimp
Who doesn't love everything that has the word "chimp" in it? No one? Correct.
With an intriguing name,
Celebrity Chimp are... let's see... bluegrass? rock? indie? punk? all of the above? I'll let you decide. If i was going to say "ooh this band sounds like [insert band name here]" i would have to say "ooh Celebrity Chimp remind me of
Mclusky"... in some respects anyway. Celebrity Chimp are quirky, both musically and lyrically. Listen to the track, Murderer, if you get a chance. I love the logic behind it. Brilliant!
Celebrity Chimp are also a bunch of lads from England who have just finished recording their debut EP, Celebrity is the New Royalty, at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall (soon to be released under a purpose built label, Green Pea). I must admit, it's been quite a while that I've been hoarding these tunes and keeping them for myself and I apologise. It's time to spread the word.
Celebrity is the New Royalty, contains five tracks. Ordinary, if a band had a banjo in it, I'd generally rather poke my eyes out with sticks (I'm sure a large proportion of the population has similar feelings), but Celebrity Chimp have created a set of songs that seems to subliminally suppress the twang. However, after saying that, if you have a soft spot for banjos... Celebrity Chimp are your new favourite band. So head over to their webstalk sites... and if you happen to live in or around ye olde London, you can see them... over and over again... yes!
Just remember: You're gonna be a porn star all your life.
Small Affairs
I couldn't write something here without talking up an Australian band.
Small Affairs! Melbourne five-piece. Rock'n'roll. Noisy and raw. Heavy guitars and strong melodies. Incidents & Accidents, their new "double A-side" EP.
Looking at what their influences have been listed as perplexes me slightly... Ride, The Stone Roses.. The Kaiser Chiefs?... Sure they may be influenced by them, but you'd never guess it by listening! Maybe it's something to do with their taste in clothes. Their overall sound is very Aussie rock... á la The Pictures, Dallas Crane, etc. However, this is not a bad thing by any means. The tunes are fairly catchy and they help you to picture what you'd be paying for if you went to see them live. I'd imagine it wouldn't be far off what they've recorded.
I feel I need to hear more to make a definite call on this one.... I see there's word of an full length album coming up as well as an "interstate" tour... ooh! All the same, I think there's potential in this band and if hard-hitting rock is what tickles your fancy it's worth keeping your eyes and ears peeled.
I was most amused by an email that surfaced recently here. Here's a little sample:
"I know you get hundreds of emails from bands, but we're actually good so don’t delete this. I stumbled upon your blog, and you write about bands I like, so I thought you might be interested in my band Kingsbury."
I love the boldness of it! I at least thought I'd best have a listen. Kingsbury are a group out of Florida in the US and as much as it would have made my day if they were awful, no, they are fairly stupendously excellent.
Not their first release, Lie To Me, a six track EP is approximately 30 minutes of rich haunting melodies and harmonies intertwined to produce quite a fine product. When you hear recordings of this calibre, you know that the musicians involved are obviously very well versed in their instrument(s); nothing sounds out of place. If you want comparisons (and I'm sure you do), i'd probably have to say bands such as mogwai, sigur ros and the like, are the closest sound-wise to Kingsbury. Long epic songs that would be great played ear drum-explodingly loud.
Kingsbury have embraced the
internet and have made all their tracks available for their fans. Their website,
kingsburymusic.net, has absolutely everything you could ever want to know or need from the band including
all their tracks... for free (
woohoo!).
Well that's it for me. I must admit after listening to Kingsbury, it's time for some cheesy britpop to re-energise my smile.
Have an excellent weekend.
