Fans are Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga about Spoon coming back to town... The popular band sold out a double night at the Palace Theatre this upcoming week: September 15-16. Spoon's Hot Thoughts album came out in March on Matador Records.

Also worth noting is that Merge Records will be re-releasing a remastered Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga as a special double vinyl and album (with bonus CD & EP). The reissue will be in stores on October 20th... and if you get it from the Merge store, it comes bundled with a T-Shirt.

The first time I was meant to see Widowspeak, it was supposed to be in June 2012... but their van broke down driving from Chicago to Minneapolis. I eventually caught the Brooklyn band as headliner at the 7th Street in October of that year.

Widowspeak’s new album Expect the Best is out now and they are very proud of the new record... and they are very excited to play these new tracks on this 2017 tour (which starts tomorrow!)

We caught Dan Croll in November 2016 and noted, “UK folktronic singer-songwriter Dan Croll (who is one to watch as well) opened the evening with a criminally short but enjoyable thirty-five minute set of songs from his 2014 full length Sweet Disarray (Deram Records/Universal) as well as some new music set to appear on his next album.”

That “next album” is called Emerging Adulthood and it’s out now on Communion Group Ltd. Croll is touring in support of the new album and will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul this Saturday.

Hey, also Brooklyn’s The Dig will open. The Dig’s new album Bloodshot Tokyo is out now.

Virginia’s Sleepwalkers just finished wrapping up their tour with the popular The Lumineers.

Sleepwalkers formed in the winter of 2013, between brothers Austin and Michael York, with friends Alex DeJong and Mike “Sweats Magnum” Bryant. They quickly release Merry Christmas in 2013, with a follow up single ‘Crisis (Boys Club)’ with b-side ‘Prey & Pressure’. By Summer 2014, they had recorded their debut record Greenwood Shade (Shoebox Treasure).

Unfortunately, the long tour took a toll on the band, as some band members (got sick from the night before) on the last night of the tour:

With great regret, we unfortunately are unable to play tonight at Schuba’s in Chicago due to an illness in the band. It breaks our hearts. We will try our best to reschedule as soon as possible.

The rescheduling information would be great, as that may mean the band will come back as either a headliner or support act on some club-size venues. That would be perfect to see the band on a more intimate setting, compared to these oversized-stadium-type venues with the Lumineers. As much playing in front of a large crowd would benefit Sleepwalkers, you do get the sense that the (new-ish) band was not quite comfortable playing these big venues.

It’s also really tough to be first band on the bill, as when Sleepwalkers took the stage, people were still outside in long lines trying to get in. The main reason for this is a heightened focus on securities in light of the recent murder of Christina Grimmie and the recent Orlando terrorist shooting. Fans had to go through metal detectors and so often gives off detections (due to belt buckets, metal jewelries, etc), so it forced the staff to pat down their patrons. The fact is, many of these fans will end up missing the opening band(s).

Also, I think the main problem with Sleepwalkers is their common band name. Doing a quick search, you would discover other similar-named bands: The Sleepwalkers from Milwaukee, The Sleepwalkers Band from New York City, Sleepwalkers from Bristol, and Sleepwalker from Austin (and randomly a great idea: Sleepwalker Sleeping Bag).

I have seen these scenarios before, and one or two things usually happen... They change their name, buy out (or in some cases, send cease and desist letters) the other bands, or do nothing and hope for the best.

P.S., Apologies to Soak. and The Lumineers (who headlined the Roy Wilkins Auditorium last Tuesday in St Paul, June 14th) as we were not given permission to photograph the bands. Normally, I try and cover everyone on the bill, but because of the nature and strict camera policies of the Roy Wilkins, we had to leave the premises to put away our gear. It just proved too troublesome to go back and forth to my vehicle (which would have taken 30 minutes in heavy rain), so I made the decision to not come back for the remainder of the show.

The band threw in a Bob Dylan cover, a Taking Heads cover .… Soak Irish kid Soak (aka Bridie Monds-Watson and not to be confused with Texas band Soak) has been drawing comparisons to Cat Power to Laura Marling to Beach ....

Due to overwhelming demand, The Lumineers’ Myth show has been upgraded to The Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium in Saint Paul. All previously purchased tickets must be exchanged for new tickets at no additional cost.

Personally speaking, they should have seen it coming, as the group previously headlined a much larger Target Center in 2013 (which was quite an upgrade from their 7th Street Entry in 2012).

The Lumineers’ latest Cleopatra is out now.

What has your favorite Vancouver garage rock duo The Pack A.D. been up to since we last left them? After a year touring and celebrating the success of their fifth studio album, Do Not Engage (one of my top 10 of 2014!) and a few terrible months of silence from the band, music has finally been presented to us in the form of a vicious new single -- and a new record.

Back in April the band surprised fans with “So What” and it’s unsettling music video that shows lead singer/guitarist Becky Black being abducted by aliens! The appropriately titled full-length Positive Thinking will drop sometime in August.

In the meantime, catch The Pack A.D. on their upcoming mini-US tour that kicks off in Chicago. They will be making a stop at the Turf Club on Tuesday, June 14th with bad-ass local punks Kitten Forever opening!

Former bassist for Woods and frontman of The Babies, Kevin Morby is back with his third solo album Singing Saw, out now on Dead Oceans Records.

We previously saw Morby in 2014 and wrote, “Most of the set was similarly mid-tempo’d and intimate in their storytelling lyrics, with Cate LeBon herself guesting on stage midway through, on “Slow Train”, reprising their duet from the record.”

Touring with Morby is Brooklyn’s Jaye Bartell, in support of his new LP Light Enough.
