UK-based DJ/Producer Sammy Virji is enjoying his debut (and sold-out) tour of America. He recently headlined the Loft, in Minneapolis, on Saturday (technically Sunday morning!)
If you’re not familiar with the Loft, it’s part of a suite inside the Skyway Theatre (which also includes Studio B and The Lyric). The Loft is on the 4th floor of the Skyway Theatre and has a great view of downtown Minneapolis. It also seems to cater to DJ/clubbing, which the Loft may have a monopoly in the Minneapolis area. Before the first DJ act, the local house DJs warmed up the audience with their mix of songs. The first DJs may have been a last-minute addition, as their names weren’t on the bill (see poster for reference). But starting at 9pm were DJ Wasko and Boardwalk, billed as Wasko B2B Boardwalk (B2B is short for back-to-back). They took turn to mix and pick songs, some of which was The Jets’ “Crush On You”, which I appreciate. Every hour we’re treated to a local DJ support act. So, the next hour was taken over by Walk, then a very energetic pumping set with StereoGo B2B Davilla. The Stereogo/Davilla set actually ran much longer than an hour, possibly covering for Obii, who showed up a little late. Obii brought his own backup dancing posse, who remained behind him as he played his set. Around this time, the dance floor was incredibly packed, with fans arriving fashionably late. By the time the headliner Sammy Virji came on stage, the audience was just ready to party. The Newcastle-based DJ wasted no time pumping in his style of bass and UK garage sound. Virji had a captive audience. Whenever he encourages the crowd to put up their hands, they all do it. Whenever he shifts his bassline, the audience danced to the new beat. His latest UKG (UK Bass) song, “If U Need It”, has been a hit with streaming and socials, and it shows as the audience gave very positive feedback in hearing them. You can hear that single mix, as well as “Moonlight”, on his Soundcloud. “If U Need It” is out now on Astralwerks.

American rapper, singer, and record producer Kota the Friend stopped by the Lyric (the venue inside the Skyway Theatre), in Minneapolis, on Friday, November 17th. The tour, titled “Kota the Friend Presents: Flowers For My Friends Tour” is in support of his album Protea.
Opening the show was Price (not to be confused with rapper Sean Price). The self-proclaimed “Rapreneur” brought the crowd forward to the stage. Very inclusive and had the crowd involved singing the chorus of the songs.
The ‘saggin and braggin’ king preached practice and positively. Between songs would talk about Generational cure, fixing generational trauma.
If you’ve never heard of him, he had success with his 2020 and 2021 indie projects CLRD and F.O.E.S during the height of a global pandemic… but now he made his major label solo debut with The Price EP on CLRD Entertainment and Motown Records.
The EP features legendary Hip Hop impresario Wyclef Jean, and his songs features collaborations with Wale, Big Krit and Elhae.
Kota the Friend closed out the night.
Kota joked about Minneapolis being a long name and tried to come up with a shorter nickname.
He’s had major success and thanked everyone who played his music in the car, at home, at work over the years. The fans are the ones who help spread the word, and in doing so, they all shared a special experience.
Like Price, Kota talked about doing better for yourself so the next generation can learn from us. During the performance, you can see the FLTBYS (Flight Boys) logos on the background. This is a clothing brand that was created by Kota the Friend around 2008.
For his last song, “Philly Jawn”, he brought people from the front row onto the stage for an epic finale.
Also, even though the Brooklynite is on the road touring, he still manages to release new music, like “Me Time” with Tokyo producer Sweet William. Kota the Friend’s latest album Protea is out now.

The question is whether there is enough entertainment value to watch a musician stand behind a bank of mixers and computers all night. The answer is absolutely yes for along with the light show and propulsive music there is the audience. Those who go to EDM shows create the spectacle: girls in bikinis; groups in matching bowling shirts; edible bracelets; fluorescent beach balls; daffy hats, eclectic eyewear and midsummer costumes to create an iridescent ball.
ETHOS XCIX aka Eric Thompson opened the evening with a gathering crowd. Based in Minneapolis his songs got the everyone moving before announcing the title of the song as being “Nightmares” or “Suicidal.” Incongruous? Not really for on his website he believes it his mission to reach out to those in dark places with uplifting music.
Red Comet aka Andy Denk next took the stage with heavy beats and Japanese anime which seemed to electrify the crowd whenever they saw their favorite characters briefly flash on the screen. Denk kept up the energy and at times it was difficult to determine who was having more fun: the crowd swaying to the music or Denk pumping his fist.
Denk explained at the end of his set that it was probably the best show of his life for it was not too long ago that he lost his father to a heart attack and he seriously considered giving up music. But based on the audience reaction to his set, it looks like he made the right decision to continue.
Crystal Skies was up next. They are a duo of Aaron Dawson out of Denver and Brian Holcomb out of Minneapolis. Unless the rising smoke and humidity were starting to affect me, it looked like only Holcomb made it to the stage. No matter, the crowd was still into melodic dubstep with little said from the man behind the console.
Although few words were mentioned, Holcomb did say in a DJ Times interview in April of 2021 that he sees creating music as more than a paycheck: “Music has been one of the main things to help me keep perspective on everything and avoid becoming overwhelmed with the situation.”
The headliner finally took the stage well past the bewitching hour and long after “Cinderella” had to leave the ball.
Nurko aka Jack Leech aka Jackson Leech Nurković is a New Jersey native who has been actively involved in the EDM scene since 2015. His sound has been catalogued as Future Bass, meaning melodic, airy and euphoric, just the adjectives needed to keep a dance party going.
Starting out as a DJ, Nurković has slowly started to branch out by first remixing popular songs (Halsey’s “Nightmare”), then collaborating with others (His collaboration with ILLENIUM and Valerie Broussard, “Sideways”, debuted #6 Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic chart and has amassed over 40 millions streams to date.), and now touring with his own music with Discovery, an EP that was released in June.
What was impressive was how nimble he was, playing a quick snippet of a song you knew, but before you could place the name, he was off in another direction like a sneaky NBA guard, dribbling the ball behind his back before splitting two defenders with the narrowest of seams.
He made the music dazzle and fun, as he told EDM Identity in January of 2022: “Music is freeing. It is an escape.”

Colombian-American actor and musician Mateo Arias, or better known as ¿Téo? (formerly T.O), is currently on his Sol & Luna Tour, stopping by Studio B (inside the Skyway Theatre), in Minneapolis, on Saturday night.
Los Angeles, by the way of Birmingham, Alabama, Maesu (pronounced “may-sue”) opened the show.
The singer/producer was inspired by such artists like Toro y Moi and FKA twigs, when he released his debut EP deSerVe. He also mentioned on stage that he’s actually writing songs for other artists, so you may have heard his songs, but not know it.
He ended his set with “Protection”, which had the audience singing along to the catchy chorus, “I need protection.”
Maesu’s latest single is called “Ｓｅｘ Ｏｎ ＧＰＳ.”
¿Téo? is very, very happy to see so many faces, up close and personal: “you show up!” He loves seeing everyone. He said he plays stadium shows (opening for Justin Bieber) and there’s just no connection to his fans. They all seems so far away.
Music wasn’t always in the cards for ¿Téo?, he started posting just fun little songs he produced when he was 17 years old on Soundcloud, and before he knew it, he was producing his debut single “Eclipse” and then with Jaden Smith’s encouragement, he released Enlightened Now. If you didn’t know, Smith, ¿Téo?, and his older brother Moisés Arias, are founding members of MSFTSrep, a creative clothing company.
As expected, since this was the Sol & Luna tour, and as you can see from the setlist, he played a balance of songs between the two albums. He also threw in some songs from his debut self-titled album, such as “Belong in the Sun” and “Uno Dos” (which originally featured Jaden Smith).
In April ¿Téo? will be playing at Coachella, as one of the few Latin artists confirmed to play this year. He’ll play, alongside Jaden Smith and Willow Smith… that should be a treat.

Heavy metal band Gwar headlined Skyway Theatre on October 11th, as part of their Use Your Collusion tour.
Opening up the show was Detroit’s Against the Grain (featuring bassist/singer Chris Nowak, guitarist Nick Bellomo, guitarist/singer Kyle Davis, and drummer Rob Nowak).
The band first came together with the release of their self-titled album in November 2010, and since then have signed to Self-Destructo Records to produce Motor City Speed Rock, Surrounded By Snakes (which they ended their set with the title track), and Road Warriors.
Songs were sung by their two vocalists, Chris Nowak and Kyle Davis… but both can be seen singing to Motörhead’s “Stay Clean”.
Up next was Portland’s Toxic Holocaust. The band looks and plays thrash metal, originally formed in 1999 by singer and songwriter Joel Grind. Currently, the band features drummer Tyler Becker and guitarist Robert Gray (both joining a few years ago).
Naturally, with the new band members, they are familiar with their new record Primal Future: 2019 (Entertainment One Records) … but taking a look at their setlist, you can see that the band chose to concentrated on older classic songs that worked well live (especially considering they only had about a 20-min set after soundcheck).
“You guys are f**** awesome,” Grind said, after seeing as how well the audience slammed danced to “Nuke the Cross”.
They ended their set with “The Lord of the Wasteland”, a song that they confessed as “a dance number” and looked forward to seeing everyone at the show shaking their bodies.
Second to Gwar, Sacred Reich (singer/bassist Phil Rind, guitarist Wiley Arnett, drummer Dave McClain, and rhythm guitarist Joey Radziwill) was the most intriguing band on the lineup. You see, the band actually broke up in 2000, but after a long hiatus, got back together to play local shows and keeping their legacy of the band alive. Last year, the Phoenix-based band signed to Metal Blade Records and wrote and recorded their fifth album, Awakening - making it their first new music in over 26 years!
Instead of playing hit songs from the 90s, the band decided to mostly stick to new songs… which you can tell they were really excited to showcase.
Since the band had a longer set to play, singer Phil Rind spoke quite a bit between songs. Everything from mentioning their newest guitarist, Joey Radziwill (age 23), was originally from Buffalo, Minnesota, to ice-fishing was just an excuse to drink beer. Rind also tried to compare Minnesota (“Don’t remember it being so cold!”) and also asked if anyone in the audience remember the Minneapolis venue The Mirage (which according to the internet, the club closed in 1997 due to lack of a liquor license).
For a band that hadn’t toured in over two decades, they were seasoned pros at playing their music. As Rind puts it, “Us old cats know what we’re doing.”
Gwar (currently Mike Derks, Brad Roberts, Brent Purgason, Michael Bishop, Casey Orr) was the headliner. Although there are no original band members since the death of Dave Brockie in 2014, the crew does Gwar justice by carrying on their unique music legacy… by combining metal with Warhammer, orcs & demons, and distinctively costumes.
We’ve seen Gwar a few times (Des Moines (27 Aug 2015), Minneapolis (18 Nov 2012), and Chicago (15 Sep 2012)), and it’s always a new and different show.
You see, with each tour, there is a new storyline in the world of Gwar. Last year, the band killed Donald Trump, so this tour, the band is being impeached by the planet Earth. With a new storyline, that meant new songs (to fit with the them) and also delightful new dialogue from the band.
Even if you don’t like metal music, you’ll still be very entertained by beheading (and the infamous blood squirts - so wear a raincoat to these shows!), puppets, and incredible costumes. Personally speaking, it’s the most entertaining show we’ve seen all year.

American rock band Falling in Reverse just headlined the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on Thursday night, September 27, in support of their new album Coming Home (released in 2017 via legendary punk label Epitaph Records).
Unfortunately, due to Visa issues, Melbourne’s Ocean Grove had to cancel their entire U.S. tour.
The Australian band sent in this heartfelt explanation:
Stepping in at the last minute was local metal band By The Thousands (bassist Adam Sullivan, drummer Carlos Monserrate, guitarist Dustin Korth, guitarist John Riviere, and vocalist Hondo Torres-Pena). We previously caught them in Iowa in 2015 and noted, “Their music sounded great, as always. It was clean and tight and perfect. I could hear the people around us talking about how great they sounded and I couldn’t help but let the smile creep across my face.”
If you’ve never seen By the Thousands, sometime they have a “Cookie Monster” metal sound, and by the end of their set, singer Hondo Torres-Pena would often do some heavy head banging with his hair let loose.
Massachusetts-based All That Remains (Philip Labonte Oli Herbert, Mike Martin, Jason Costa, and Aaron Patrick) came on next, playing some tracks from the new album Madness (Razor & Tie Records). All That Remains is unique in that they crossed over many musical genre, including pop/punk and country music, which they demonstrated with a cover of the great Garth Brooks’ ‘The Thunder Rolls’. Believe me, you haven’t lived until you see body surfing to a country song.

We last saw the group at the Skyway Theatre in 2015, when they were touring for The Order Of Things (their 7th studio album on Razor & Tie).
Now back with Madness (also on Razor & Tie), this is one of the band’s biggest hit album to date, hitting #1 US Top Hard Rock Albums and #9 US Top Rock Albums charts. The band was obligated to play a few tracks from the album, including the previously mentioned Garth Brooks cover and the title track, ‘Madness’ which started their set.

Unfortunately, due to Visa issues, Melbourne’s Ocean Grove had to cancel their entire U.S. tour.

The universe wasn’t on our side this time, and it saddens us all to announce that our tour of the United States this September/October has now been cancelled. This is due to the prolonged bureaucracy of obtaining work visas. While frustrating, this is a process we have to treat with legitimacy as to not jeopardize our careers and the many more US tours we will embark on in the future.
US fans don’t fret, we will be in your country soon enough playing shows, with news of that coming very shortly. We are so sorry to any other bands or fans who this has let down. Stepping in at the last minute was local metal band By The Thousands (bassist Adam Sullivan, drummer Carlos Monserrate, guitarist Dustin Korth, guitarist John Riviere, and vocalist Hondo Torres-Pena). We previously caught them in Iowa in 2015 and noted, “Their music sounded great, as always. It was clean and tight and perfect. I could hear the people around us talking about how great they sounded and I couldn’t help but let the smile creep across my face.”
If you’ve never seen By the Thousands, sometime they have a “Cookie Monster” metal sound, and by the end of their set, singer Hondo Torres-Pena would often do some heavy head banging with his hair let loose.

World fusion/electron act Beats Antique stopped by the Skyway Theatre on a rainy Thursday night in Minneapolis.
Originally listed as an early show, starting at 7pm, the show was actually delayed doors at 8pm (which meant the first band would not start until 9pm). It did not affect the terrific turnout for the show, as with these sort of shows, they prefer a late start. In typical Beats Antique shows, many of the audience were dressed up for the occasion - plenty of belly dancers, renaissance-style costumes, group costumes, and, of course, the light-up glow sticks and hula hoops dancers. Audience watching is half the fun at these rave-ish shows.
DJ Thriftworks started the evening. He has a fanbase, who gladly showed up early to rave to his mixes. His style is a sort of hip hop with eastern influences, including playing ‘Kendrick Lamar-Money Trees’ from his 2015 Thump/Lucidity Mini-Mix.
He played a couple of his “9 days old” album Red Leopard, and at the end of his set, said, “shout-out to Jeff Bridges, we all love him.”
Next up was funky trio Too Many Zooz (trumpeter Matt, saxophonist Leo, and percussionist ‘King of Sludge’) from New York - their first time in Minneapolis. They were actually quite interesting and I got the feeling that they were used to bustling the streets of New York from the way they handled themselves like it’s no big deal.
The trio closed out their set with a couple of cover songs, including Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ and Bleksem’s ‘How Low Can You Go’.
Since the last time we saw Beats Antique, they’ve grown from simply two musicians (David Satori and Tommy “Sidecar” Cappel) and a bellydancer (Zoe Jakes) to adding clarinet player (Sylvain Carton?), several additional dancers/percussionists, and when they needed it, Too Many Zooz to help with horns and additional percussion.
The expanded sound is courtesy of their latest album Shadowbox, which was heavily played in their set - including ‘Three Sisters’, featuring three additional dancers playing on three floor toms.
Also new is that that Zoe Jakes helps out with the music, sometime donning a bass drum. Her role is to create different dance styles and she would show up every other song (between songs she would often go back stage to change costumes, etc).
As usual, Beats Antique creates one of the most visually entertaining and unique shows that you can experience. With 2016’s Shadowbox, the group seem to play around with light and shadows as their new theme.

Garbage is currently touring in support of their recent critically acclaimed sixth studio album Strange Little Birds (STUNVOLUME Records). The much-beloved band stopped by the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on July 7th - their second US show of the new 2016 tour.
Opening the show was the very talented Dee Dee (from the Dum Dum Girls) with her latest music project Kristin Kontrol; their debut album is out now called X-Communicate (out now on Sub Pop Records).
One of the best things about live shows is you get to see how the band performs and sometimes hear some good stories. Dee Dee Stands in front of the mike and looks around at the crowd and tells her story about how when she was a young girl she loved listening to Garbage, she is so excited to be on tour with the band. Fun fact, according to Dee Dee, her first concert, 20 years ago, was seeing Garbage. The other exciting thing when your debuting a new record X-Communicate, and that is all you got, you get to play it and the band was up to the task.
The conversations I had with a few people who knew about the Dum Dum Girls were excited to see and hear how she would sound without the other members. I can testify that from the beginning of the set to the finish she sounded wonderful.
Kristin Voice has a dreamlike way of getting to you as you listen and even with the dance tunes you get that vibe that you're in the clouds. Highlights from the set was ‘Show Me’ and the title track ‘X-Communicate’.
We welcome back this wonderful band Garbage (Shirley Manson, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson, and Butch Vig) to Minneapolis. The band showcased some songs from their sixth studio album Strange Little Birds, On the STUNVOLUME Records label. I am so overjoyed to see that this record debut at number 1 on the Rock and Alternative Charts.
Anticipation begins waiting for the show to start, people are crowding in, to get a better vantage point. I do want to say that the Skyway Theatre is a wonderful Venue for a good view because the way it is set up (in a long rolling slope), there are no bad spots.
I had a chance to listen to the new record about a week ago, there are some amazing gems to be found on it, so I talked to some people before the show about what they were most interested in hearing from the band, most were just happy to have Garbage back in town, very few had a chance to listen to the record.
The running story that you hear every time they come to town is that First Avenue was one of their very first gig's, so Minneapolis/ St Paul have some of the oldest fans in the country. Case in point, after ‘Automatic Systematic Habit’, singer Shirley Manson reflect on their first night with one of their biggest fan, Reeva - who had turned 13 years old and stood in a very long line waiting to Garbage’s first ever live show.
Garbage comes out and right off the bat you can feel the energy just kind of explode around you, Shirley has a great commanding voice you have to be enthralled by. The start the show with the first song off the record, that to me is a statement of what do you think of this, I was impressed with their overall sound and the way they moved between songs, Shirley as we all know is very opinionated and rightly so, if you listen to many of her lyrics they are statements about something she feels is important.
Whenever there were technical difficulties, Shirley had to talk to the audience, to distract us while they fix the problem. Sometime, she’ll just talk about social media. She’s very knowledgeable when it comes to the news and politics, stating “Call it complaining rant or angry whatnot. I know I have a good life, but I also see so many suffering in the world. So many people robbed rights... and a month ago when Orlando [shooting] happened, it has made me to stand up with the LGBT community!”
Although Shirley stayed as a dedicated singer (and dancer), she did pick up an additional rhythm guitar to help add an extra sound to their song ‘My Lover’s Box’.
Some highlights: I'll start with ‘Stupid Girl’ got the crowd dancers dancing. ‘Bleed like Me’ is one of their best songs, and it is the song that, according to Shirley, is the one that determine if you were a “real Garbage fan”. Of course, ‘Only Happy When It Rains’ got the sing along crowd involved.
I was hoping for a couple of songs from the new record and one song from Bleed Like Me that is perhaps my favorite. I got my reward in the encore ‘Why Do You Love Me’ is my danceteria song and ‘Even Though Our Love Is Doomed’, I believe is the best heart-to-heart song on the record ... just beautiful.
Note: Butch Vig was not present, due to being sick, and Matt Walker of Smashing Pumpkins, Morrissey..... took his place, for the time, being and did an outstanding job. I want to say if you have never seen Garbage, go you will not be disappointed, one other note if you want to hear Shirley talk about what's going on take a look over at the Current 89.3 Shirley took over the airwaves right before the show at the Skyway.

In all honesty, I had no idea what to expect when I walked into the Skyway Theatre to see the Parisian seven-piece big band Caravan Palace (with Loom In Essence as opener). I knew that happenstance had handed me the opportunity to review a band… but I had no clue that this band would essentially be the Love-Child of modern Electronica and 1920’s swing, or that they would in fact, steal my heart.
The energy was tangibly palpable, and reciprocated between the performers and the audience in a way I hadn’t seen in ages. While the colorful and deep hues of electro-waves hypnotized the crowd, the simultaneous brilliance and authentic 20’s swing overtones enlivened everyone’s bones. The audience was truly enraptured. It felt almost sacred, a subtle letting down of our collective guards. Caravan Palace immediately gave us permission to enter into celebration; a wild and yet knowing aliveness took hold, and we danced. And danced. There were so many smiles throughout the audience all night it was infectious.
I actually don’t remember attending a more fun performance. The band owned their musicianship, and engaged the crowd fully through deep and sultry solos, Charleston dance-off’s, and entire crowd jumping sessions. Front-woman Zoe Colotis playfully enticed the crowd while bassist Charles Delaporte jumped up on the speakers to get the crown going. Their electric stage presence, multifaceted performance approach, and pure joy was contagious. The crowd's energy was merely a mirrored expression of what the artists were creating: a communal experience of raw fun, excitement, and playfulness.
My feet are still tapping, my heart is still scatting, and my lips are still smiling remembering this unique performance. Caravan Palace has left their mark on this girl. Well done, well done.

Teen heartthrob Jacob Whitesides just headlined Studio B (at the Skyway Theatre) in Minneapolis last Tuesday, June 7th.
American singer/songwriter, actor Shane Harper opened up the show with a brief 25-min set, playing some tracks from debut 2012 self-titled album, but also included brand new songs from his new Like I Did EP, including the title track and ‘See You Around’.
Like I Did is out now on Virgin Records.
Jacob Whitesides, smartly dressed, is a teen idol from Knoxville, Tennessee. He’s currently touring in support of his latest single ‘Lovesick’ (Double U Records). After appearing on The X Factor in 2012, he got national attention, and got a record deal with BMG Records to release A Piece of Me. The EP debut on the Billboard 200 chart at #26 (#9 on the Digital Albums chart).
His main market is Radio Disney, which named Whitesides as their ‘Next Big Thing’ artist. Of course, that meant that his audience is mostly teenage girls (and some boys).
As soon as Whitesides took the stage, almost everybody on the dance floor raised their cellphone in the air to record and snap a photo of Whitesides, as he launched into ‘Rumors’.
Whitesides, although young at the age of 18, is a natural performer. He really knew how to respond and handle his loving crowd. He gave them his full attention and awkwardly accepted any gifts his fans gave him.
Whitesides would often joke around, for example, when his band screwed up, Whitesides announced, “If you can barely play my songs, then you can join my band!”
He mentioned on stage that he wrote ‘Not My Type At All’ after breaking up with his girlfriend (which the audience called out “Bea Miller”), which was at a time in his life when he was on the rebound by chatting up with all these girls... only to realized that it wasn’t him at all.
His hour long set included some new songs on his forthcoming debut album, which he said may land this September. New songs like ‘Focus’ and ‘Open Book’ were about his ever-changing emotional life.

Instead of exiting the stage for the encore, Whitesides remained on stage after the set finale, ‘Secrets’, to introduce his new song ‘Let’s Be Birds’ as the finale song.

His main market is Radio Disney, which named Whitesides as their ‘Next Big Thing’ artist. Of course, that meant that his audience is mostly teenage girls (and some boys).
As soon as Whitesides took the stage, almost everybody on the dance floor raised their cellphone in the air to record and snap a photo of Whitesides, as he launched into ‘Rumors’.
Whitesides, although young at the age of 18, is a natural performer. He really knew how to respond and handle his loving crowd. He gave them his full attention and awkwardly accepted any gifts his fans gave him.
Whitesides would often joke around, for example, when his band screwed up, Whitesides announced, “If you can barely play my songs, then you can join my band!”

His hour long set included some new songs on his forthcoming debut album, which he said may land this September. New songs like ‘Focus’ and ‘Open Book’ were about his ever-changing emotional life.
