The first time we saw Saint Motel in 2014, they blew us away: “I had low expectations, but by the first song, they had already won me over with their brass / dance / pop / Caribbean / jazzy sound. It seemed like the band took the best elements of various music genre and made it their own. The six-man team (including a saxophonist and trumpeter) was full of fun and energy.”

Saint Motel’s upcoming saintmotelevision will be out October 21, 2016, via Elektra Records.

Jr. Jr. (Josh Epstein and Daniel Zott) - formerly known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. to open. The Detroit duo’s latest remixed album Still Going: The ‘Gone’ Remixes is out now.

Weathers (singer/rhythm guitarist Cameron Boyer, guitarist Cameron Olsen, bassist Brennen Bates, and drummer Cole Carson) also on the bill. The Los Angeles-based band’s latest single ‘Happy Pills’ was the #1 added on Alternative Radio - marking the highest total adds this decade for a new artist!

The Gaslight Anthem’s singer/songwriter Brian Fallon will be headlining the Varsity Theater this Saturday in support of his debut solo album Painkillers, which came out last Friday on Island Records. The music event billed as Brian Fallon & the Crowes on March 19th is practically unheard of since the Varsity Theater’s Saturday and Sunday are usually blocked out for wedding receptions and private events (where the majority of their business comes from). The music Saturday show should be a memorable night!

Brian’s band will be comprised of Gaslight Anthem’s guitarist Alex Rosamilia, Horrible Crowes cohort Ian Perkins and Molly & the Zombies’ bassist Catherine Popper.

Special guests Austin Plaine and Jared Hart to open.

With only some city exceptions, the entire “An Evening with Greg Dulli” has sold out. Dulli is pretty happy about the upcoming tour (which kicked off a few days ago). If you’re not familiar with Greg Dulli, he is the singer/songwriter for The Afghan Whigs.

The strangest pairing, storyteller, comedian, poet and literary stylist Derrick Brown will open the show. We’ve covered a few music/comedian shows, and it’s always a surreal experience.

Brown is the winner of the Texas Book of The Year Prize (2013) for his poetry, published in Strange Light (Write Bloody Publishing). The poetry compilation book is a cosmic love story and part auto-biography. I’m sure you’ll be able to pick up a copy at the Cedar show this Saturday.

Sydney's Bag Raiders is in the USA, touring in support of Checkmate. The title track off the EP featured angelic vocals from Benjamin Joseph, lead vocalist of SAFIA. Previously, the duo (Jack Glass and Chris Stracey) teamed up with renowned collage artist, Alexandre Coll to create a stunning, psychedelic video for Bag Raider’s track “Waterfalls.”

Opening up will be Plastic Plates. The producer came to our attention when he remixed Sia’s first single “Alive” off of This is Acting. When asked about the remix, he said that, “Sia and I first met in Sydney 2001. Sam Dixon and I shared an apartment in Bondi and Sia crashed at our place. Until 2010, I played drums on Sia's albums and toured around the world in her band. This is my 3rd remix for Sia, 'Cloud' in 2010, 'Chandelier' in 2014 and now 'Alive.' Given our musical history, reinterpreting Sia's vocals is effortless and pure joy for me.”

We caught Matthew E. White a few years ago with Okkervil River in Minneapolis (11/01/13). At the time he was promoting his re-release of Big Inner.

White is back with a new album Fresh Blood, coming out on 9 March 2015 via Domino. Fresh Blood will be available on CD (WIGCD309), vinyl (WIGLP309) and via digital download (WIG309D). There is also a special edition of the album, which is a double LP gatefold heavyweight vinyl (WIGLP309X) containing a bonus LP titled Fresh Blood: No Skin – a full length minimalist mix of the entire album, minus strings/horns or choir.

Los Angeles' Christian Berishaj, or otherwise known as his stage name JMSN ('Jameson') released his JMSN (Blue Album) last December 9, 2014, via White Room Records.

Originally the album was going to be called The Blue Album, listed for August 2014, but since it came out in early December, it was simply self-titled (JMSN), but the record is still referred to as the Blue Album. This reminds me of Weezer's debut album, which is self-titled, but everyone called it the Blue Album.

I got a review copy of superhot DJ/producer David Guetta's repackaged album, Nothing But The Beat 2.0. This is a new version of his previous 2011 album, Nothing But The Beat. The title comes from will.i.am's song, "Nothing Really Matters," with these lyrics, "Nothing really matters in the club, but the beat."

The new version contains all the original hits of the original as well as new songs featuring two Sia vocals on "She Wolf (Falling to Pieces)" and "Just One Last Time", Ne-Yo and Akon on "Play Hard", Taped Rai on "Just One Last Time", NERVO on "In My Head", and Tegan & Sara on "Every Chance We Get We Run."

I really love Sia (as you can tell from our previous articles), so I was pleased to see Guetta including more Sia on version 2.0. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the his Sia collaboration on "Titanium," hitting the top three of Top 40 airplay has an influence in bringing more Sia tracks?

In any case, "She Wolf" is the perfect companion to "Titanium." Both songs features a typical power beat anthem at the appropriate moment in the song, which makes for a great workout powersong, although the former is slightly tamer in the beginning.

I do have some complaint about the album. I believe this is a digital-only release, and as far as I know it, there are no plans on releasing a CD version. I understand the limitation of the CD format and kids today aren't interested in compact discs. Things are going digital whether I like it or not.

The other thing I couldn't stand is autotune, which accounted for half the album, including Nicki Minaj's "Turn Me On" & "Where Them Girls At," Akon's "Play Hard" and "Crank It Up," "Sweat" remix, Jessie J's "Repeat," and Taio Cruz & Ludacris' "Little Bad Girl." Autotune is overused in the industry, it's driving me nuts. Obviously I'm the only one bothered by this, no one who loves pop music cares.

Most of these songs have guest vocalists, but like the title suggest, it's not about the vocals, it's all about the beats. Instrumentals like "The Alphabeat," "Lunar" and "Sunshine" are fine examples of music designed to get people moving on the dance floor. To me, the instrumentals are more superior to the actual vocal songs because the vocals (especially autotuned) distracts from the Guetta's beats.

David Guetta is one of the hottest superstar DJ in the world, constantly headlining major DJ festivals around the world. His latest release is Nothing But The Beat 2.0. If you haven't picked up the original, then obviously 2.0 is the superior album to get.

Little Mix are a British pop girl group that came out of the eight season of UK's The X Factor. They were recently featured in BEAT Magazine #5, featuring one of the hottest bands in the world, The xx, on its cover. You can pick up a copy for £2 at thebeatjuice.com.

They've also announced a dance competition in support of their new single, "DNA." The girls are asking for fans to create a dance routine to the song by uploading videos to their Youtube account.

In a word: Sia is magical.

She stopped by Minneapolis to play the Fine Line Cafe, which, not surprisingly, sold-out. I've said this before, but unless you're in the front, seeing the stage is next to impossible, especially if you're short. Do tall people not understand that they're blocking somebody's view if they're in front ? I think this could be rectified easily, if perhaps the stage was higher, but alas, it's not.

Opening up for Sia was Brooklyn's Body Language, who's DIY 80s songs did not really fit well with Sia's pop sound. It was Body Language's last show with Sia, and as sad as that sounds, the band's music remains mostly cheery.

Sia - Academia

By the time Sia took the stage, the venue is packed from shoulder-to-shoulder. This may be because the Fine Line, for some reason, did not allow for re-entry. Now, this is not the first time that I've been to a show that was "no re-entry" policy, and I never got the logic behind this.

Sia arrived on stage with a glowing unicorn light-up horn on her head. The horn lit up in different colors, controlled by a switch, during her intro song, "The Fight". This is followed by her previous intro song, "Buttons", the hidden gem off of Some People Have Real Problems.

A lot of her songs on this set was from her forth-coming album, We Are Born, to be released in June by Jive Records. Based on what I've heard, they are really quite good. Particularly impressed by "Clap Your Hands" and "The Codependent".

Destiny

There was one guy in the audience who held a spinning LED sign for "Destiny", which Sia had to let him down by saying "We've long retired those Zero 7 songs. So if you came to hear that, we're not doing them. You might as well go home now." The tone wasn't cold, it was said in an affectionate, joking manner, so I didn't think the Destiny dude cried whilst fleeing from the crowd.

Which brings me to the fact that inbetween songs, Sia would ask for people to shout heckles at her. Most of her comments are pretty off-beat and funny (in a "where the heck did that come from?" way). For instance, she tells us a story about how she had Taco Bell and ultimately got, what she affectionately refers to as, "uh-oh bum". Another odd one, someone shouted out "Pee on You", which apparently was a joke-song that Sia recorded on her tour bus. And yes, they improv the song live. The banters are indeed the best part of the show.

She did two covers, Madonna's "Oh Father" and The Kinks' "I Go To Sleep". The former had a long introduction about how they recorded the song with some altered lyrics, but Madonna's record company rejected it and they were forced to record a "correct" version for We Are Born. Defiantly Sia said that when they do it live, they do it the incorrect way.... and when she said incorrect - literally because the stanza was sung out of order, unintentionally! But hey, it's like no one noticed anyway.

She ended the set with "Breathe Me" from Colour the Small One. She came back, complete with her fairy-winged bubble machine for the two songs for the encore. Almost in unison, everyone held up their phone, camera, recording device to snap this unforgettable moment.

Look for We Are Born in June, preview her new material now if you see her on tour. Well worth it, just for the random banters between the songs.

That's 11am in Minneapolis ? The press release was also confusing, it lists "Premieres Tuesday, March 3".

Here's the thing with online internet radio - it shouldn't be hard. East Village Radio has eight options, which looks like a fail to me. It woudn't hurt to just have a "play" button? Ideally, I would like one play button and eight "advance" options if I find that the standard 64k is too low quality, I can upgrade (especially if I have a higher bandwidth).

Anyway, unfortunately, I am not home to listen to the show (yes, like most people, I'm at work...) and it doesn't look like this radio station offers archive options.  EDIT: I am told an archive of this show is located at www.eastvillageradio.com.

Incidentally: the best bass-ey Smiths song (besides from the bass remix of "This Charming Man") is "Barbarism Begins At Home". WOW, love that bassline.

Off topic: but I saw a movie called Everything Is Illuminated, that stars the singer from Gogol.  I think this was before he was more known for being in this band. I guess, like Flea in Suburbia?

Anyway, having only seen music video footage, this looks like an amazing band to see live. Unfortunately, they're also quite popular, so expect very packed (if not sold out) shows. They are, incidentally, playing two dates in Minneapolis at First Avenue on April 24^th and 25^th.

The last time we mentioned Elizabeth and the Catapult, the song "Race You", went straight to the top ten on The Hype Machine. And it's easy to see why, the song is such a fun and cute pop song.

The Joy Formidable - My Beerdrunk Soul is Sadder than a Hundred Dead Christmas Trees

When I first heard of The Joy Formidable last year, I was impressed. I said I saw "lot of potential" in this band. Based on the free Christmas song, "My Beerdrunk Soul is Sadder than a Hundred Dead Christmas Trees" (available at musicglue.com), I'm still loving the vocals by Ritzy.

Maybe there was a problem with my download, but the MP3 track is 4:56, where the last 30 seconds of the song is complete and utterly garbage... it sounds like it was encoded in error and not part of the song. I've edited out the crap part for you.

The Manchester Orchestra - 12 Days of Christmas

We're on Day 10 of the 12 Days of Christmas, so hurry on over if you're a fan of the Manchester Orchestra. Each of these songs are acoustic live versions of their song. My only complaint is that you have to listen to these songs on the computer - so if you've got 30 minutes to spare, sit and listen away.

My favorite track is "One Hundred Dollar", you can simply hear the anger as singer Andy Hull asks to borrow $100. While the song is short and doesn't offer much explanation, you, as the audience makes up your own background to the song. Anyway, the song is from their latest album, Mean Everything to Nothing, they'll probably be playing loads of their new songs on tour:

Finally, we have Sia. This actually has nothing to do with Christmas, unless you count getting a new music video as a holiday gift. But just talking about the video for "You've Changed" isn't enough to warrant its own article, so I thought I might as well stuck her here.

Sia has always seem to me to be this child trapped in a grown-up's body. The latest video is wonderful, it features this weird stop-motion, "dress up" video-gamey feel to it. I don't know who's idea it was, I'll bet it's a combination of Sia's child-mind and director Dennis Liu of @radical.media, but it came together pretty great.

Longtime readers to W♥M will note how we really love Sia (I reviewed Some People Have Real Problems, Gus wrote Zero 7, and Christopher thinks Sia sounds like Kimya Dawson). When I heard that latest release will be a live DVD called TV Is My Parent (to be released next week, May 19^th on Monkey Puzzle Records/Hear Music), I had to get my hands on this for review.

Sia - Academia Destiny

Looking over the setlist from this show, I recognize most of these songs from her later works, from her recent album and her collaborations with Zero 7 (check out "Destiny"!) to Colour the Small One (the crowded loved "Sunday"!).

The entire one hour show, includes a "pretend encore" encore (The Zero 7 song, "Distractions"), was shot at the Hiro Ballroom in NYC on September 12^th, 2007. I think they were just finishing up Some People Have Real Problems around this time, so you do hear some of her new songs on this DVD release ("Academia", "Day Too Soon", and "You Have Been Loved" to name a few).

The DVD opens up with the hidden-track from Problems called "Buttons". Combining "crude" child-like drawings with neon fluorescent colors (an wonderfully catchy song to boot) it was really hard to top that. Although I will confess that "The Girls You Lost To Cocaine" came very close.

The best part of the show was when Sia pulled a tooth out of her bra shortly before "Breathe Me". The tooth was from her guitarist, who had the tooth taken out the previous night. What I took out of this is what a strange creature Sia is. She's like this child, keeping a tooth close to her chest the whole time!

Sia and company seems at ease on stage, not at all nervous. They knew the show was being filmed, but you get the impression that Sia welcomes this. The video editing by director Nic Wrathall and 5.1 surround sound are excellent. I'm just surprise it took them this long to get the whole thing together as a DVD release. I don't think there is a bluray version, but seeing as it was shot in high-definition, I wouldn't be surprise if they decide to release a bluray version later on.

The special features includes four official music videos, including the wonderful "Soon We'll Be Found" video. The rest of the features is Sia and friends recording random "Behind the Scenes" snippets. These bits aren't very long, but it gives you a glimpse to the band and what they're like on tour. It's really meant for hardcore fans as it will just seem boring to casual fans... But if you do decide hunt for the eastereggs, try and find "pushups for shots" videos. I love hearing "Too easy, mate! Too easy!", followed by Sia's pushups.

Christopher mentioned Sia before (see link), well, she has a new album out on January 8th, 2008 (on sale in the UK on Jan 14th), called Some People Have Real Problems. It looks like her theme for this album is all pixelated "kid" drawings (I think they're all her art actually...).

The pixel art is also extended to her website, which may sound like a cool concept, but I just think it's hard to navigate. Please webmaster, stop using burning bright colors...

Sia Furler was already in the music scene with Crisp, an acid jazz band before releasing her debut OnlySee album in 1997.

She signed to Sony with Healing is Difficult (2000), but didn't get major recognition until Colour the Small One (2004). I first heard of her through the smash-hit song "Sunday" with that crazy video where she's being abused and trampled upon.

So anyway, in an effort to support her fourth album, Some People Have Real Problems, she is going to be on tour from February through March at fairly indie-friendly venues (I'm speaking from experiences because she's actually going to do Minneapolis).

I thought the best song off the new album is "Academia" because of the clever lyrics:
