Normally, Ottawa’s Hollerado is actually on tour with The Sam Roberts Band, however for this Saturday night (January 28th), they’re headlining the 7th Street Entry, while SRB was asked to perform at The Current’s 12th Birthday Party next door at the mainroom.

Sleep Study

Opening up the show was Sleep Study, starting at 9pm. We caught the local band a few years ago, and like last time, they were a trio, led by singer/guitarist Ryan Plewacki, and they covered Buzzcocks’ ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)’.

Savoy Motel

Nashville’s Savoy Motel was up next. The gargey / psychedelica / 70’s inspired band is normally touring with The Lemon Twigs (however, like The Sam Roberts Band, they were asked to play at the sold-out The Current show).

The four-piece features bassist Jeffrey Novak, drummer Jessica McFarland, guitarists Dillon Watson and Mimi Galbierz, all took part in singing (lead or backup) songs from their self-titled debut album (What’s Your Rupture? Records), such as ‘Sorry People’.

Their set was familiarly similar to their first Minneapolis appearance with The Dandy Warhols in September 2016... but they appeared to be more confident and talkative on their appearance last night. They’re still a very young band, so expect more great things from this band.

Canada’s Hollerado took the stage earlier than advertised, starting their set with some of their favorite songs to play live, including their biggest hit song ‘Americanarama’ (which got the crowds pumping and dancing hard). After ‘Americanarama’, singer Menno Versteeg announced that they will be playing unreleased songs from their forthcoming album ... set for release sometime this Spring 2017 (just in time for SXSW, I reckon).

As promised, the band played a lot of new songs, including a track they called ‘Eloise’ and something called ‘I Got You’ (a song about being “rich and an a******”).

Hearing the new songs live for the first time, I can tell you that it is classic Hollerado’s standard sound... that is about fun and not to be taken too seriously.

Midway in their set, Versteeg reminisce the last the band was in town, it was about four years ago at the same venue. They were coming down from Chicago and were trying to make time, as they were running late. In fact, they were speeding the entire way and was eventually pulled over by the police. As the officer was writing them a ticket, they asked the cop, “How fast can we go, without getting caught?”.

The punchline was that on that 25 November 2013 night, the band made a record time of setting up and ready to play on stage in seven minutes.

Hollerado ended their set with ‘So It Goes’, and tomorrow resumes their tour with fellow Canadian band The Sam Roberts Band.

Portland’s The Dandy Warhols is back on tour for their new record Distortland (Dine Alone); kicking off their tour at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis.

Savoy Motel

Nashville’s Savoy Motel, possibly named after the Savoy Hotel, opened up the show. The band featured bassist Jeffrey Novak, drummer Jessica McFarland, guitarist Mimi Galbierz, and guitarist Dillon Watson. I believe all of them sing, or takes turn lead vocals (although I found that the bassist often didn’t wander near the microphone). The band had a 70s look and sound to their music.

The band basically played their debut self-titled record, including new single ‘Souvenir Shop Rock’ on their 40-min set. The record technically isn’t available until October 21st via What's Your Rupture?... but they had copies for sale at their merch table.

Off topic, but in a recent discussion between Hotel vs Motel, they are the same - except the Motel was an abbreviation for “motor hotel” (you can park your car in front of a room... which meant the motel only had one ground level).

As for The Dandy Warhols, they are always fun. As previously explained, they have a relationship with Minneapolis and had always made sure they come to the city whenever they work out their tour itinerary.

Minneapolis was their very first national tour date (with Electrafixion) at the Fine Line Music Café on 16 November 1995.... and of course it went very wrong: their tour van broke down. They had to get their vehicle in working order, but in the meantime they played some house shows in the area. The whole lovely experience inspired singer / songwriter Courtney Taylor (he didn’t have that extra Taylor part back then) to write ‘Minnesoter’ - a song that the Dandies will always play in Minnesota! That is no except with last week’s show, which you can see, handwritten on the set “‘Soter”. If you ever wanted to see a Dandy show, make sure to see it at Minneapolis, as it’s always fun and unique.

With this new Distortland tour, I’m not exactly sure if they brought their own disco ball on tour (or if it actually belongs to the Varsity Theater), but throughout the show, they used the disco light in a sometime smoky and dimly lit room.

For this tour, there are some new songs, but fans who saw them last year should already be familiar with these shows. For example, ‘Some Things You Got to Get Over’ was played in November 2015.

The other new songs, ‘You Are Killing Me’ and ‘Catcher in the Rye’ were pre-release singles for people who preordered Distortland.

As with a typical Dandy show, Taylor-Taylor scheduled in a solo section for ‘Every Day Should Be a Holiday’ and a partial ‘Welcome to the Monkey House’. They’ve previously explained that these solo efforts were for the rest of the band to take a bathroom break.

Of course, ‘Bohemian Like You’ was a massive crowd pleaser. If there was only one song people knew, it was this one. I’ve previously mentioned that the song was the summer single of 2000 for me. It made on to many of my mixed tapes.

What really made this tour weird and special was that, for the first time I can remember, the band actually did a real encore. Even Taylor-Taylor explained, after coming back on stage, “We’re not the kind of band that do this sort of thing...”

The encore song was ‘Horse Pills’, which commanded a sing-back from the hardcore audience that stuck around (even after the “go home” music started playing after the set closer ‘Search Party’).

For the first night on the Distortland tour, I’d say it was a good one.

We’ve written previously about The Dandy Warhols and their relationship with Minneapolis. Their tour van broke down in the city in November 1995, and it unintentionally made the band fall in love with the city. Since writing ‘Minnesoter’, the band always make sure to squeeze in that song whenever they play here (despite not appearing on their normal setlist).

The Dandy’s ninth studio album Distortland is out now on Dine Alone.
