San Cisco and Chaos Chaos sold out the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis last night, March 30th, as part of their post-SXSW but pre-"The Beach Tour". According to the band, this was their first sold-out show in the USA, although there were plenty of sold-out shows when the band toured with The Vaccines earlier this year.

CHAOS CHAOS

It was good to see Chaos Chaos again, as you know, we were there to witness their "first ever" gig as the new duo. The duo have written more new songs, which they played some of it for us last night. Also new, the two sisters brought along cellist Bryan West, who stepped in to play their Smoosh song "Promises" and stayed on stage to do production beats on his Mac.

Like I said, most of these songs are brand new to me, so I really couldn't tell you their titles. I did love the funky beats song that featured drummer Asya's vocals. I think she's got a great voice (as heard on God Help the Girl).

Songs I knew were definitely "My Hands" and "In This Place". Highlight of the show was when Asya stepped out in front, as seen in the photograph provided, to sing a cover of Tegan and Sara's "Closer".

SAN CISCO SET LIST

As for San Cisco, please refer to the set list to see what songs were played. A couple of things about the set: (1) they saved the best for last, "Awkward" closed out their set, (2) "Golden Revolver" is such a great song every time I hear it, this is their first single but never really got the recognition it deserved, (3) "Hunter" was written after they watched "The Deerhunter" at a hotel, (4) "John's Song" is stripped down with just Jordi (everyone in the band took a break) and (5) "Rocket Ship" is surprisingly catchy, I overheard many people started singing the doo doo part as they left the venue.

No encores were played, but that's just as well, because, let's be honest, there's no way they can top "Awkward". It's better to end on a high note. Still, that didn't stop the fans from screaming out "One more song!" chants.

This is the third time we've seen San Cisco and it's actually pretty fun to see them grow up on stage. Their first show in St Paul (incidentally that was officially the first confirmed show in America), the band was a little stiff. Seeing them with the Vaccines, you can tell they were warming up. Now, Jordi Davieson is doing more guitar thing/dancing about when he doesn't have to be singing into the mic. They're definitely a lot more comfortable and loose on stage, and it shows.

San Cisco will end their U.S. tour in April, so try and catch them if you can. In May and June, San Cisco heads back to their native country to play sold-out venues with Millions and Chaos Chaos.

We first mentioned singer/songwriter Jaymay five years ago and at the time, she just released a split with Kayoko the year before. Guess what? The two will be heading to Minneapolis at the Triple Rock this April 22nd, 2013*.

According to Jaymay's Facebook (who is very active on social media), she said that she last saw Kayoko on their Japanese tour seven years ago. It should be a fun reunion tour.

Anyway, in the last five years since we wrote about Jaymay: she's made it to the big time on Conan O'Brien and Craig Ferguson in the States and In the Colored Room in the UK. Her latest album is called 10under2 which was released last year under her own label.

Jaymay's "The Never Be Daunted" Tour kicks off in April.

Yes, our favorite San Cisco is heading back to Minneapolis tonight (March 30th) at the Triple Rock. I will personally be there to welcome the Australian band back.

Opening up will once again be Chaos Chaos, who you may recall played their first ever gig with San Cisco last year.

The ridiculously catchy and popular "Awkward" song (now over 4 million YouTube views), has been be re-released as an EP last Tuesday, March 26th, featuring two new tracks, "Fred Astaire" and "Wild Things" (both songs were previously released as UK and Australian singles). I believe all the songs will be available on San Cisco's debut album. According to an RCA representative, the record is coming out later this spring.

Hayden is wrapping up his post-SXSW tour this week, stopping by Minneapolis' Triple Rock Social Club this Easter Sunday (tomorrow, March 31st).

He is here to promote his seventh album, Us Alone, out now on Arts & Crafts.

Us Alone is probably more stripped down from his previous work, keeping it simple. Hayden explained that the main reason was that it was hard "replicate things like that live." He also added that his vision for Us Alone was, "I wanted the sound of five people walking into a room and playing a full set. With the exception of some stellar help from friends on a song or two, those five people were mostly just me…"

SAN CISCO in San Francisco photograph by sus We bid farewell to the great Vaccines and San Cisco tour of 2013, ending at the sold out Fillmore show in San Francisco on February 15th. Sus was there and she provided these pictures for us to enjoy. She was turned into an instant Vaccines fan when she saw them at Outside Lands in 2011 and immediately bought tickets to see them on their North American tour. Unfortunately, that tour in September 2011 was canceled due to a throat surgery. Sus finally saw them last week and reported that the band was in top fun energetic form: "Great energy, great talent!" Crazy crazy, easy tiger. Although The Vaccines is taking a break from touring - San Cisco continues their tour in March (post-SXSW 2013). Of course, we'll be covering their appearance in Minneapolis and elsewhere. Australian buzz band San Cisco took to the stage Saturday night and was greeted by a buzzed near capacity Triple Rock crowd. The indie-pop band has only been active a few short years, but has managed to create a fervor of interest world-wide with their pleasantly catchy songs. It should also be noted that the band is still quite young (they started when members were still in high school); lead singer/guitarist Jordi Davieson has the baby-faced good looks of a Jonas Brother. But their youthful presence gave the performance a more vibrant and innocent feel and even made a grouch like me forget I’m turning 30 in a month.

Davieson, with his bandmates Josh Biondillo on guitar/synths, Nick Gardner on bass guitar and tiny, but fierce Scarlett Stevenson on drums/vocals, effortlessly showcased a collection of well-crafted pop to an audience eager to dance. Songs like “Golden Retriever,” “Reckless” and hit single “Awkward” were effervescent and sunny and combated the freezing cold beyond the door. San Cisco and UK headliner the Vaccines share similar pop sensibilities; they both write insanely catchy tunes, although lyrically, the Vaccines seem to tread slightly darker territory.

Much has happened in the world of the Vaccines since they were last in Minneapolis, nearly two years ago opening for the Arctic Monkeys at First Avenue. Their wildly hyped, but well-received debut 2011’s What Did You Expect From the Vaccines? took them all over the world, touring with acts like The Walkmen and Arcade Fire. After two EPs, the band put out their second record Come Of Age in September 2012, working with famed producer Ethan Johns, son of Glyn Johns who produced 70s giants like Faces and the Rolling Stones.

Pardon the pun, but I was expecting great things from the Vaccines as they hit the stage and I was not let down. They opened with jangly disaffected raver “No Hope” and crowd-pleasing “Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra),” the latter complete with fist-pumping and head banging. Bearded frontman Justin Young had a lot of energy and was enjoyable to watch as he moved around the stage, occasionally dipping his head into the frenzy of people to sing. One intoxicated fan made several semi-successful attempts at crowd-surfing, which considering the venue’s punk-rock roots, isn’t all that inappropriate. But pogo-ing seemed to be movement of choice for this fun and noisy kind of rock and roll and Young encouraged plenty of hand-claps and sing-alongs.

“Teenage Icon,” the poppy second single off the new record, kept the fans bouncing; bassist Árni Arnason grinned and grooved on stage right while Freddie Cowan worked that bright guitar tone behind Pete Robertson’s irresistible drum beat. Amidst a slew of bobbing heads, Young sang his cheeky lament, “I’m no teenage icon/I’m no Frankie Avalon,” a lyric that made me smile as I watched him bask in the glow of adoring outstretched hands.

“What did you expect from post break-up sex?”

People were calling out lots of songs during the set, but a clear favorite was “Post-Breakup Sex,” off of their last album What Did You Expect..., and my personal favorite. “I think I’m losing my voice,” Young confessed before asking fans for a little vocal assistance. “Help me out!”  This crowd was more than happy to bulk-up the areas the frontman’s voice couldn’t fill (myself included), loudly slurring the infectious track’s alliteration-riddled chorus: “Post-breakup sex/That helps you forget your ex/What did you expect from post break-up sex?”

Hopefully, Young and the band didn’t catch one of the 3 million flu virus strains that have been attacking the Twin Cities since December. Morphine’s Mark Sandman once said, “Someday, there’ll be a cure for pain.” Until then, we’ve got a pretty great Vaccine!

The 'Cines/Cisco tour will hit the Triple Rock in Minneapolis on February 9th. Normally I don't go out in the winter to see shows, but this is a bill that I cannot miss. Come say hi to me if you're going to the show too.

San Cisco debut on Triple J in 2011 at #7 for "Awkward" and last year, two San Cisco songs made it to JJJ's 2012 countdown: "Wild Things" (#53) and "Fred Astaire" (#48).

Although their debut self-titled album was released in Australia, I have not heard words yet on an official US release. I suppose you can always import the album, if you fancy.

What's next for San Cisco? Well after The Vaccines tour; expect the band to appear at this year's SXSW in Austin. I know they will have a great time in Austin, I've said this before and I'll say it again: SXSW is the best music festival that I've ever attended. There are imitators, but SXSW is, by far, the best.

Catchy London-based outfit The Vaccines made quite a splash in 2011 with their debut What Did You Expect From the Vaccines? an album chock full of reverb-heavy guitar hooks and dark pop tracks like “Post-Break-Up Sex” and “Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra.)” Last May the band released an EP of covers: “The Winner Takes It All” by ABBA, “Mannequin” by Wire, “The Beast In Me” by Nick Lowe, and “That Summer Feeling” by Jonathan Richman.

In September they put out their second original album Come of Age, a collection of noisy and insanely fun songs that will certainly get fans creating a little friction on the floor. On February 9th, the band will be stopping by the Triple Rock Social Club, where nothing blasts the chill from the air quite like a little rock and roll (and maybe a whiskey on the rocks.)

Jess fell in love with these bands at a young age and not at all embarrassed about it. Better tastes than me: who fell in love with Information Society, Phil Collins, and Wilson Phillips (this was not discussed).

Personally I love that R.E.M.'s Out of Time-era. I do really love Eponymous and Murmur (which I reviewed the Deluxe Edition).

THE ROLLING STONES
The legendary Rolling Stones formed in 1962, and fifty years later, they are still together. Last month (October), the band played their first gig as a band in five years. And they're just "starting up", with a few other live dates announced this year:

The Super-Deluxe set will also feature Charlie is My Darling, a DVD/Blu-Ray hour-long Rolling Stones road trip documentary and costs $99.99. I believe you can also purchase the DVD/Blu-Ray by itself if the deluxe edition is too rich for your blood.

If you're a hardcore fan and already own all the selected singles, you'd be pleased to note that the new compilation also feature two brand new songs called "Doom and Gloom" and "One More Shot."

We've seen this before with other band reunion, notably The Beach Boys and The Stone Roses - where the band members all hate each other. Will it last long enough for them to enjoy the mad cash or "the music that matters"?

LA received a special treat last night when San Cisco stopped by the Echo in Silverlake during their US tour. With their sophomore EP ‘Awkward’ gaining major attention and their single of the same title obtaining more than 2 million hits on YouTube, I was sure this 4 piece Australian band would bring a fun night of danceable tunes. This was their first show in Los Angeles.

Newcomers in the folk-pop scene, Miner opened up with their first live show EVER in a big way. This good-looking 6 piece band was instrumentally flawless, with uplifting lyrics in ‘Hey Love’ and bonfire-worthy ‘Golden Ocean’. You can’t help but clap your hands and stomp your feet to this band, and the camaraderie is certainly apparent as they laugh onstage playing their banjos and mandolin. This group shines, keep an eye on them because I have an inclination they are going to rise to the top very quickly. I’m honored to have witnessed them at the beginning.

Next to play was New Zealand’s Tom Lark, also his first time playing in LA. His band members were excited and the vibe was brit-pop influenced and energetic. Entertaining guys to watch before the headliners.

San Cisco started their set just before 10:30. These guys have only released 2 EP’s since they formed in 2010, but frontman Jordi Davieson has fantastic stage presence and immediately the crowd was dancing around to their playful songs. Their new song ‘Fred Astaire’ came equipped with impressive guitar riffs and sweet vocals that make you wanna hold hands with your high school sweetheart. The adorable Scarlett Stevens on drums certainly gives the band a ‘500 Days of Summer’ feel, and even the shy lead singer reminded me of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. They saved the best for last, ending the night with ‘Awkward’. Look for their debut album with Fat Possum Records to hit stores this November.

San Cisco stopped by the Turf Club in Saint Paul, last night. There were already about a fifty people waiting outside the venue, so I knew it was going to be a great night.

CHAOS CHAOS

Opening up was Chaos Chaos. Last night was their very first show ever under Chaos Chaos, although Chloe and Asy (Asya) are music pros, having played under Smoosh since they were 10 and 12, respectively.

If you showed up early, you were privy to a sneak peek of "My Hands" on their soundcheck. I believe they played off most of their songs off their S EP, including "My Hands", and an "old" Smoosh song "Promises" and a "supernew" song called "Ander's Place." They ended their brief set with the last song on their EP, "Across the Map."

From the story told on stage, apparently drummer Scarlett saw/met Smoosh when she was 13 years old. I overheard someone jokingly suggest that was last year because everyone in San Cisco looks so young.

Anyway, San Cisco just came from New York's CMJ shows. The thing is with SXSW and CMJ is that band's sets are usually 30 minutes, so I am guessing that the Turf Club show might be one of their longer full shows. Scarlett told me later that they were actually supposed to play longer, but one of the keyboards weren't working so they cut down their set.

Check with the setlist to see all the songs they played, they saved the big hit "Awkward" last. Yes, instant sing-along song!

Biggest surprise for me was "Girls Do Cry" was sung by Josh, not Jordi. Other surprises: "Golden Revolver" is actually a great song live and "Reckless", when played live, is quite different (it's a lot more upbeat with the drums.)

Encore was a Jordi-solo song called "Jones' Song" (or was it John's? I couldn't tell by the accent).

San Cisco's next stop in their mini-US tour will be a final stop at The Echo in Los Angeles, California, tomorrow (10/23).

Normally we do the audio podcast, but sometime I would get such interesting things in the mail that I have to show them off. The last video I did showed off St Etienne and Mark Mallman's new CD, Double Silhouette, and was heavily edited. I found that the extra edit was just not worth my waste… so this new "Vu & Tell" is a one-take recording with no edits. I think the next one, I might try two camera angles to see if might be more interesting…

I am disappointed in the BNLX's LP CD packaging. I reckon it's just the review copy, that there is a hand-made version (which I'll recommend getting if that's the case.)

Willie Nelson's upcoming book, Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die: Musings from the Road, is about his greatest influences and his thoughts and opinions on things (such as marijuana).

I've only read the foreword and already I've learned that his greatest song "On the Road Again" was written on an airplane (on a vomit bag!) I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

Book is coming out November 13th, just in time for holiday shopping for the Willie fan.

Check out the debut 12" It's in the Blood, a 6-track EP. They wrote that there will be a vinyl release show on November 2nd at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St Paul, but I could not actually locate the event listing on the bar's website.

Here is their biography:

Brüder of Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota is a quartet formed in 2011 and comprised of Ryan Harding, Tom Busch, Tucker Jensen, and Mike Mastel.

The band combines heavy and abrasive rock influences in groove based bursts. Lead vocals are split between Harding and Jensen.

Brüder will release their debut record “It’s In the Blood” on Vinyl and digital download in October of 2012.

Best part about vinyl is that it's a two-for-one deal: you get the MP3 as a bonus download. I've said it, but to clarify, most people buy vinyl but only listen to the MP3s!
