Don’t worry about the future of Big Thief, as they’re about to release their sophomore album Capacity on June 9th on Saddle Creek. In the meantime, the band’s singer/songwriter, Adrianne Lenker will be headlining a solo tour this Winter.... stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center on February 21st.

We saw Big Thief in July 2016 and mentioned, “Although shy, distant, and often staring at her feet, when not singing, Lenker did share some personal things about herself - for example, bassist Jack Stanek (Victor's Door) is actually Lenker’s step brother. Or that Big Thief’s secret band member is called “Martha”, an oregano plant.”

Interestingly enough, Here We Go Magic’s lead man, Luke Temple will open. We haven’t seen Temple since Nov 2014 ... so it’s been a while.

Georgia-based indie-rockers Silver Palms will be at 7th Street Entry on April 14, opening up for The Men.

Silver Palms' latest release is a single for "Superstar", which is out now on Canvasback Records.

What's interesting about Silver Palm is that the band consists of twin brothers Adam (guitar) and Dalton Drury (vocals/guitar).

The band performing tonight was the cause of this cooling affect. After the first song, one of the two vocalists, Ben Worcester, announced to the audience that, "We are finally home!" Alluding to being in Minnesota, just a hop away from the bands home country, Canada. SAID THE WHALE Said The Whale opened up with their upbeat song, "Mother." The two founding members, Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft, would alternate vocals on between songs. Each having their own distinct sound, obviously. Tyler Bancroft sang songs more about personal struggles and growth. Ben Worcester, who sounded a lot like Colin Meloy from The Decemberists, seemed to cover songs more about reminiscences and taking care of the earth. Between most songs, Ben Worcester would give little witticisms and anecdotes between songs. The crowd at this venue normally stands during performances. Most of this particular crowd, stood in the middle of the floor or along the back wall. The audience was shy at first, mostly consisting mainly of not quite hipster, college age kids. About twenty minutes into the performance, Ben called the audience closer to the stage, "unless you are leaning on the wall. Leaning is good. My next song I write will be called 'Leaning In the Shadows.'" Then he made a comment about taking advantage of the quiet crowd, and pulled out his acoustic guitar. The audience eventually yielded to the bands enthusiasm and even started dancing a bit. Besides Ben and Tyler, the band also consists of drummer Spencer, Schoening, bassist Nathan Shaw, and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown. All the male members wore skinny jeans. Jaycelyn looked very sweet in a black and teal tank dress. All of the members were animated and fresh. The heat wave outside was completely forgotten during the performance. SAID THE WHALE

         The three band bill began the evening with Vancouver five-piece Said the Whale, who brought their Pacific Northwest song stylings as a nice appetizer for the two other bands to come. The band was very grateful to be on tour with Stars, and certainly grateful that their dedicated fans showed up early to see them.

They started off their brief set with some songs I didn't recognize, but still enjoyed the amusing song with the "don't tell my mother" lyrics… but as expected, they did some songs from their latest Little Mountains, such as "Big Sky, MT" (about co-singer Ben Worcester's grandfather) and "The Light Is You", however, I thought it was great that they played "Love Is Art/Sleep Through Fire" which is from a compilation album called Catherine North Demos.

MILO GREENE

         Milo Greene, a Los Angeles-based cinematic pop quintet with four lead singers, took the stage next to a very warm welcome. Kicking off with "Cutty Love" and followed by "Silent Way", the band played a solid set of rising melody songs that had the crowd moving and smiling.

         Perfectly suited to soundtracks or cruising top down the Pacific Coast Highway, the quintet named for their fictitious booking agent, thanked the crowd for the strong reception they've received every time they've played in town, and capped their set with the single that is everywhere, "1957".

         After a brief intermission, the stage screen rose to the sounds of Aretha Franklin's 'Who's Zoomin' Who" and each member of the Montreal indie-pop band Stars danced their way into position, surrounded on stage corners by large glittering disco balls.

         Leaning heavily on songs from their sixth and most recent album, The North, they opened with the uptempo 'Theory of Relativity', featuring the distinctive male/female interplay vocals of Amy Millan and Tor Campbell driving the song, immediately engaging the audience.

         Before the title track, 'The North' was played, Campbell referred to it as a 'good Minnesota song' and his MN roots were further defined when he let the audience know that his parents first met when both worked together at the nearby Guthrie Theater. 'Backlines' and 'We Don't Want Your Body' turned the beat up and invited dancing, or at least shuffling in place, as the full floor didn't leave much elbow room for expression.

         Tempo turned downbeat for a purposely depressing 'Personal', prefaced by a very appropriate snippet from Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' 'Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken', for those that were paying attention and knew the band's influences. Millan introduced the new narrative song, 'Wishful' about the loss of virginity in another slower song that kept the crowd listening.

STARS

         As the band went into 'Dead Hearts' from the mixed reviewed 'The Five Ghosts', I realized that Stars are one of those unique bands that can successfully move from playing a sullen, eloquent torch song, to a throbbing disco beat stomper that exudes positivity, the next. They are literally only one chorus tweak away from achieving airplay volume a newer indie-pop band with similar vocals like Of Monsters and Men currently gets (if that's what they want).

         Their 95 min set crescendo'd with a feverish 'Take Me to the Riot', again prefaced by a brief obscure lyric snippet; this time from The Smiths' "Frankly Mr. Shankly", a band they've covered more than once.

tell me how I sleep, tell me how I dream

         Playing to their largest area audience to date, the main set ended with the crashing 'Walls', Campbell pleading "tell me how I sleep, tell me how I dream", as band members left their instruments and stage one by one.

         Before embarking on the three-song encore, Campbell mentioned how his dad would have been happy to hear the gracious reception given by the First Avenue crowd and teased the band might take a request and play a version of 'Call Me Maybe', but instead launched into 'Midnight Coward' and the rousing 'Your Ex-Lover is Dead' culminating in the crowd singing the end verse acapella.

         All but two band members were then seated along the drum kit for their final song, 'The 400'. Tor Campbell emoted every lyric, ending the song with microphone down, using the projective power of his natural voice, to carry those last words across a hushed and awed audience.

         The audio on this evening was both great and challenged - while phasing of drum sounds and guitar squelches into right/left speakers was impressive, both lead vocals seemed a little buried in the mix, at least from my location. Stars is both a veteran band with pristine vocals and sonics, and a band that still remains fresh and changing thirteen years on, and insists you listen at whatever new music they put out next.

I've been writing about Noah and the Whale since 2008, so you should already be familiar with the Brit-folk group.

The band announced their fourth album, Heart of Nowhere, out May 6th, 2013. Just recently (March 20th), the band played the first single, "There Will Come A Time", on Radio One.

Singer/guitarist Charlie Fink will also be releasing some short film with the new album. This is not a surprise, since he's dabbed in films since The First Days of Spring. The screening of the film of Heart of Nowhere will see its first screening along with the album's release in May.

It was only recently that I found out that Said the Whale was the third act on the Stars and Milo Greene show at First Avenue on March 26th (next Tuesday). It should be noted that Minneapolis will be the last date on Said the Whale's touring with fellow Canadian Stars.

As you know, we love all three bands, as seen on previous articles: Stars, Milo Greene, and Said the Whale.

The last time I saw this Juno Award-winner band at the now-defunct 400 Bar, they were in the progress of writing and showing off new songs. I am predicting they'll be doing those new (and newer) songs next Tuesday, mixing in some songs from their previous record, Little Mountain.

Vancouver's Said The Whale just kicked off their fall tour last night at the 400 Bar, in Minneapolis.

As you can see from the setlist, they didn't stick to the same one from their 4/20 show, dropping off "We Are 1980", "O Alexandra", and "Big Wave Goodbye." Instead, it would seem that they are testing out new songs.

Outside of the new songs, half their set is from Little Mountain ("The Reason", "Loveless", "Big Sky, MT", and "Hurricane Ada") with the other half from their debut album, Islands Disappear ("Black Day In December", "False Creek Change", "Camilo (The Magician)", "Hurricane Ada", and "Goodnight Moon").

Highlight of the show was their encore, a cover Fruit Bats' "When Ü Love Somebody." They've never played the song live before, so it was a real treat to hear this Whale vs Bat song.

Said The Whale is currently on tour; look for a new album in 2013 from Hidden Pony Records.

I've mentioned Rah Rah before, but what I didn't say is that I confused this band with Ra-Ra Riot. Rah Rah is a sextet from Canada.

Rah Rah's latest album, The Poet's Dead, just came out today (October 22, 2012), via Hidden Pony Records.

They're currently in the middle of their tour, so I will swinging by their Minneapolis show, after my Gold Fields/Diamond Rings show at 7th Street, to see them and report back.

Great Big Sea is one of Canada's most beloved bands. As I previously mentioned, the band plays about 300 shows a year (having seen them a few times at the Irish Fair.)

It is no surprise that for their 20th Anniversary, the band will once again kick off a 2013 tour, starting in Anaheim, California. As part of the celebration, expect their very first Greatest Hits 2-CD set called XX, to come out October 30th. Fans may want to wait November 27th for the ultra deluxe boxset.

Just announced today, but you can stream the entire Indian Handcrafts' forthcoming album, Civil Disobedience for Losers, today at spin.com.

Indian Handcrafts are a Canadian power-duo (drummer/vocalist Brandyn James Aikins and guitarist/vocalist Daniel Brandon Allen) and that Civil Disobedience for Losers album is coming out October 30th via Sargent House.

An interesting note about recording the new album, Allen explained that he had to record with a broken hand, "The doctor said if you go and record that's your problem if it gets worse. It was a little painful some days, but because of being there in the surroundings it was easy to get around that. It healed fine."

That's commitment.

Quebec's Le Vent du Nord (The North Wind) is releasing Tromper le temps ("Fooling Time") in the US on November 3rd.

Hurdy-gurdy player and songwriter Nicolas Boulerice explained why it's important to play traditional music in a modern world, "We are part of 2012, just like everyone else. But we think we can bring historical things more into the day to day discussion, so we can talk about what happened in the past. That is why we have always been very close to historical subjects and images, because we play traditional music, music that is often connected to the separatist movement. We aren’t always talking explicitly or directly about the issues that matter to us; we always take the detour via history."

So what's in store for this Juno Award-winner band this coming November 8th at the 400 Bar? Event listing shows The Lesser Jackson on the bill. The Lesser Jackson is a classic 60's & 70's soul cover band. It should be an interesting night.

Yellow Ostrich's been in the news a lot lately. First off, Barsuk Records is releasing "Marathon Runner", their debut single from their sophomore LP, Strange Land (due out March 6th). If you haven't heard the song, it is available as a free download via Spin.com.

Their upcoming spring tour in support of the second album begins on March 3rd and ends on April 12th.

I'm working under the impression that the band Other Lives is incredibly lucky and incredibly talented to secure a Radiohead support act, starting in late February! As you know, we are massive Radiohead fans, but I've long concluded that they are well out of my concert-budget-range (by playing only large-sized arenas and I can't afford the $100+ ticket for a decent seat).

Of course, I was curious about Other Lives, I put on their latest album, Tamer Animals, to listen... surprisingly a lot non-traditional instruments and falsettos that will definitely fit well with Radiohead's current music.

OK, second time's the charm. Once again, Lara will be heading out to the 400 Bar on pot day (4/20).

In Said the Whale news, their new album is called Little Mountain and comes out March 6th, 2012, via Hidden Pony Records/EMI. Their preview single is "Heavy Ceiling", which you can listen (and download) on Soundcloud.

As described about the new album:

Little Mountain finds the group defying rock conventions without sacrificing any of their pop smarts. Said The Whale enlisted the juggernaut production prowess of Tom Dobrzanski, and multiple Grammy Award winner Jack Joseph Puig, who mixed the 15-track collection. Their combined efforts steered the song suites to explode out of the speakers, as they shepherded the band’s signature sound to a new level.

More diverse than previous albums, Little Mountain is a multi-stylistic tour-de-force that ventures into everything from soaring, horn-laden cabaret ("The Reason") to jaggedly syncopated rock ("We Are 1980") and effervescent guitar pop ("Loveless"). First single, “Heavy Ceiling,” is a dancefloor-ready ditty that reflects the confident and razor-sharp sound that dominates this LP.

Said the Whale is from Vancouver, Canada, and they are stopping here in Minneapolis at the 400 Bar this September 5th. Lara said she'll cover them when they come through town.

I did some background check on the band, apparently the band debut in 2007 with Talking Abalonia, but that didn't work out, so they re-release the same album under a new name of Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia, a year later. Edit: Oh Wikipedia. Talking Abalonia was an EP, it was re-released with 7 additional new songs as Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia.

The last news item I got from New York's Whale Heart Records is that they've released Atlanta's "gothic folk" Little Horn's album, Twelve in late July.

The album is mostly through the hard work of Keith Forrester, who originally put together his band via Craigslist, although his current line-up consists of his little brother and the rhythm section of Whale Heart's other band, Lille.... and one DJ.
