Low’s Mimi Parker has died. The news came via Twitter:

She passed away last night, surrounded by family and love, including yours. Keep her name close and sacred. Share this moment with someone who needs you. Love is indeed the most important thing.

NPR adds, “Formed in 1993 by Parker and her husband Alan Sparhawk in Duluth, Minn., Low emerged as a crucial group in what would come to be defined as the decade's slowcore movement. Known for its beautifully simple, droning and dark instrumentals, the band was anchored by the delicate vocal harmonies of its central couple, which could cut through even the harshest noise. “I've been pushing towards the beauty and I know Alan sometimes focuses on the chaos," Parker said of the band's music in a 2021 interview with All Things Considered.”

We last saw Mimi Parker earlier at Rock the Garden in June 2022 and noted the new bassist: “Duluth’s Low (Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker) took the stage… with new bassist Liz Draper. Former bassist, Zak Sally was also spotted in the audience. Low has been around for a long time, well before I first saw them in May 2001… ”

Afrobeat pioneer Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 is currently on their “Love & Revolution” tour. The tour will stop in at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis on September 21st.

We caught the band at Rock the Garden in June 2015 and wrote, “How fitting on Father’s Day that the heir to the Afrobeat throne, Seun Kuti , led his father Fela’s band, Egypt 80, playing undoubtedly the highest energy hour of the weekend. The Nigerian group was the worldbeat entry to the festival and the first African band to grace its stage. Kuti and his fifteen-plus cohorts made their short time worth it with the tribal, jazz, funk, and rhythmic hybrid that his father pioneered.”

New Orleans-based record label Putumayo, renowned for bringing world music to America, will be releasing Feels Like Home: Songs from the Sonoran Borderlands — Linda Ronstadt’s Musical Odyssey this September 30, 2022. This is to accompany Linda Ronstadt’s new book, Feels Like Home: A Song for the Sonoran Borderlands, published by Heyday Books.

The musical collection was co-curated by Ronstadt and Putumayo founder Dan Storper and includes influential songs from her childhood and career, as well as several of her own interpretations of classic Mexican songs. Package and digital fans will enjoy the best of both worlds, as the CD package will include an album download card.

Divide and Dissolve Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white ....

One of the best music festival around, Rock the Garden returned after a two year absent due to the pandemic.

The festival is broken up on two stages, the main stage and the Garden Stage… which, this year was curated by Low’s Alan Sparhawk.

It made sense that Sparhawk asked Divide and Dissolve to play RTG this year… having supported Low on their tour earlier this year. The Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) drove 18 hours to play Minneapolis. As we wrote in 2018, the duo often talk between their songs about abusive police power, worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people. They reminded us that the land we are on belongs to the Dakota people and that we should give it back.

Next up as Dâm-Funk (stylized as DāM-FunK), American producer from Pasadena, California. He is mostly by himself with his laptop, playing some funky tunes and live-mixing.

DāM-FunK is currently signed with Stones Throw Records.

After an introduction for “Blow” by Diane Miller from The Current’s Local Show, Duluth’s Low (Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker) took the stage… with new bassist Liz Draper. Former bassist, Zak Sally was also spotted in the audience.

Low at First Ave (05/18/2001)

Low has been around for a long time, well before I first saw them in May 2001: “…Low came on stage with a chair. Singer Alan Sparhawk sat down and played some acoustic numbers, which inspired about twenty or so people in front to also sit down in the center. The whole thing had, if you'll excuse the pun, low energy.”

Luckily, they weren’t as slowcore as I remembered, they were actually a little upbeat at this year’s RTG performance.

In fact, their latest album Hey What, which came out last year on Sub Pop, was produced by BJ Burton (who previously did wonders for Bon Iver, Charli XCX and Lizzo). Hey What was nominated for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical category at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

After a long two year absent, Rock the Garden returned to the Walker Art Sculpture Garden on a beautiful Saturday, June 11th.

The show is big, featuring seven bands on two stages, so the review will be broken up into two parts, the Main Stage and the Garden Stage.

Gates opened at 1pm, and first band on the main stage was Niger’s internationally acclaimed Tuareg guitarist and singer/songwriter Bombino (Omara Moctar). The hot weather of Minneapolis’ afternoon reminded the band of their home country, Niger.

They played their distinctive guitar-driven songs, driving the audience to stand up and started dancing.

Bombino’s latest is a live album Live In Amsterdam, which came out in 2020 via Partisan.

Next up on the main stage was Filipino-British singer-songwriter, Beabadoobee, stylized as beabadoobee, playing some tunes from her debut album Fake It Flowers. Beabadoobee just played the Governors Ball in New York City, after wrapping up her current run opening for Halsey’s Love and Power U.S. arena tour.

Beabadoobee is the only band W♥M haven’t seen, so we were very excited for their appearance at Rock the Garden. You see, there’s a lot of buzz for Beabadoobee, who won the Radar Award at the 2020 NME Awards, as well nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2020 Brit Awards, nominated as breakthrough act for 2020 in the annual Sound of 2020.

It’s easy to see why Taylor Swift and Harry Styles have already mentioned how much they like Beabadoobee. They have a very 90s rock ‘n roll sound, and they played it loud and hard. So hard that the drum shield fell over during their performance.

Beabadoobee’s forthcoming album Beatopia, will be out July 15 on Dirty Hit.

Sleater-Kinney was the co-headliner of Rock the Garden. The Olympia group is touring in support of their tenth studio album, Path of Wellness.

We’ve been following this Riot Grrrl band since the mid-90s, having enjoying bands such as Bikini Kill, Team Dresch, and Bratmobile. We’ve seen SK since 1998, and was sad to learn that their original drummer Janet Weiss left the band. We recently saw Weiss in Quasi in April 2022 and noted, “Weiss is famous for being founding member of Sleater-Kinney, but have played with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, as well as part of Wild Flag.”

Currently Sleater-Kinney is Corin Tucker (vocals and guitar) and Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals), but for touring, they added Vincent Lirocchi on drums, Fabi Reyna on additional guitar, and Galen Clark on keys.

We are still very proud of covering Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats very first appearance at Bluebird Theater in Denver (Apr 2013): “Nathaniel Rateliff, debuted his new musical endeavor last Thursday at the Bluebird Theater accompanied by soul outfit, The Night Sweats…. The Night Sweats, a seven-piece ensemble (drums, keys, bass, guitar, trumpet, and alto & bass sax), took the stage first decked out in full suits. In classic soul style, they began to play and sway in an introductory number as Rateliff sauntered onto the stage. Hearing Rateliff’s traditionally gentle and alluring vocals morph into that of a bellowing soul god with “Trying so Hard Not to Know” the night immediately shifted from exciting to epic. Channeling the dance moves of James Brown, Rateliff spastically skittered across the stage bringing a soul revival to the Denver theater.”

Who knew that show in 2013 would eventually spawn into one of the most popular band around? Now with their third studio album, The Future, on Stax Records, the band is more popular than ever.

Australian duo Mess Esque (Mick Turner and Helen Franzmann), are on tour in support of their self-titled debut album (via Drag City). The tour will stop by Minneapolis at 7th Street on June 9th.

If the name Mick Turner is familiar, he’s previously from Dirty Three, who we saw in Sep 2012 and said he was stoic: “Flamboyant and energetic [Warren Ellis], along with somber-faced Jim White on drums and stoic Mick Turner on guitar, gave the crowd the sonic feast, songs that stretched and swelled with emotion and with every kick of Ellis’ pointed shoe. Ellis indeed provided humor and dramatics to the show; dressed in what one audience member concluded was an LSD-inspired shirt (Ellis insists the tie-dyed purple and turquoise shirt, buttoned down Tom Jones-style, was the result of throwing up Kool-Aid), the violinist drilled the bow into his instrument, causing stringy bits to rub off and into his considerable salt-and-pepper beard.”

You know, I’ve complained about how The Internet is such a common name that it’s hard to find them on the ... er… internet. Now that Syd dropped “That Kyd”, it’s hard to find her online as well…. Anyway, we saw The Internet in Oct 2018 and wrote, “There were no encores, but based on hearing the entire audience singing along, I think they ended on a really high, positive note. Currently, The Internet is enjoying their time hanging out with Gorillaz.... where they are playing in front of thousands of fans every night. After this Gorillaz tour, expect The Internet to sell out even more headlining gigs.”

Twenty-one year old artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jordana is touring in support of her new album Face The Wall. She’ll tour with Wallows in May, then with New York’s Harry Teardrop (no relations to local Frankie Teardrop), and eventually with Remi Wolf.

Face The Wall will be out on May 20th via Grand Jury. The title, as Jordana explains it, “The album title has a few meanings to me. Mostly, it's about not giving up. The wall can be anything in your way. The album is a sort of reminder to myself that I have to face those things, and I can't take the easy route and turn around.”

According to my bad memories and physical ticket stubs, I've seen Sleater-Kinney at least three times, and have expressed sadness ... Low Low’s Christmas show is taking place at First Avenue on Saturday. All proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Heartland. Low adds, “Despite the commerce involved, we hope you will consider .... Beabadoobee Beabadoobee with Christian Leave, BlackStarKids The Truman. $20-$25 aka Beatrice Laus, this Filipino/British breakout bedroom-pop artist put out a new EP, Our Extended .... Saturday, June 11, is the big Rock the Garden show. We’ve previously written about the 2022 line, see details below… but here’s something new: we’ve previously seen Australian duo Divide and Dissolve in Feb 2018, as opener for local favorite Polica:

Outside of an angry punk band or two, no band in recent memory has started so polarizing before ever playing a note, than Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people, and reminding the mostly white audience, that this was not their land.

Similar statements were given before each song played, with the expected crowd response ranging from a smattering of applause to cat calls and insults- but inciting seems to be part of their purpose, so in that regard, it worked. Musically, they play a heavy, low tempo, skeletal doom rock blend meant to incite as much as their statements, with latest self-release being last week’s Abomination.

As with previous events, there are two stages, food trucks, beer tents, and great music.

This year, they are bringing co-headliners Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Sleater-Kinney… both excellent bands.

I don’t want to brag, but we were first to report Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at the band’s first appearance at Bluebird Theater in Denver (Apr 2013): “Nathaniel Rateliff, debuted his new musical endeavor last Thursday at the Bluebird Theater accompanied by soul outfit, The Night Sweats.” The band went on to sign to Stax Records for their self-titled debut album in 2015.

Incidentally, if you ever see a Nathaniel Rateliff’s solo show (which we did in in April 2014), his music and performance is very different than a Night Sweats show. And trivia, but Rateliff previously appeared at Rock the Garden in 2016.

As for Sleater-Kinney, I’ve been seeing the band live since 2000 … with the last one in Feb 2015 after they re-united for a tour. That show was somewhat bitter-sweat, as it would be the last time we would see them with original drummer Janet Weiss (who we just saw in Quasi in Apr 2022).

Gates open at 1pm, music starts at 2:30pm.

NXNE (North by North East) is returning this Summer. Honestly speaking, this is one of my favorite music festival. What started off as a knock off of SXSW, NXNE has become its own thing. The major differences is that it’s in Canada and venues are a little spread out (somewhat like New York’s CMJ festival).

When we went to NXNE in 2011, we saw Evan Dando, Juliana Hatfield, Art Brut (what an incredible show!), Cults, Kevin Seconds, Washington, Brian Wilson (he didn’t play), Peelander-Z, Ty Segall (we were stuck on a boat with him), Men Without Hats, Devo, and Stars (sort of saw them from a very far distance).

Of course, that was in 2011, before the pandemic. I’m just speculating, but based on their 2022 title, “North By Northeast Music Festival Puts Focus Into The Clubs”, it would appear that the festival organizers are going to focus on smaller clubs and smaller bands (which I personally think is the right move). The festival still promises six days of music, featuring over 300 bands! And the BEST PART, it’s only $20. That’s unheard of for a major music festival.

Speaking about the low price, NXNE Founder and President Michael Hollett said, “That’s actually cheaper than when it first started (in 1995). Especially given the pummelling the live music scene has taken over the last two years, we committed to removing financial barriers to NXNE to best connect artists with audiences; even for artists, it’s free to submit and they get paid to play.”

As of this writing, since it’s still early days, no bands have been announced. A preview of the roster is coming on May 4th (next week).

This year, they are bringing co-headliners Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Sleater-Kinney… both excellent bands.

I don’t want to brag, but we were first to report Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at the band’s first appearance at Bluebird Theater in Denver (Apr 2013): “Nathaniel Rateliff, debuted his new musical endeavor last Thursday at the Bluebird Theater accompanied by soul outfit, The Night Sweats.” The band went on to sign to Stax Records for their self-titled debut album in 2015.

Incidentally, if you ever see a Nathaniel Rateliff’s solo show (which we did in in April 2014), his music and performance is very different than a Night Sweats show. And trivia, but Rateliff previously appeared at Rock the Garden in 2016.

As for Sleater-Kinney, I’ve been seeing the band live since 2000 … with the last one in Feb 2015 after they re-united for a tour. That show was somewhat bitter-sweat, as it would be the last time we would see them with original drummer Janet Weiss (who we just saw in Quasi in Apr 2022).

Gates open at 1pm, music starts at 2:30pm.

23-year-old Jacobsen, aka Tedious & Brief, recently released “Not That Deep”.

The song is a break-up song, which Jacobsen said, “My husband came to me with the opening lyrics of the song. He’s a studio drummer and every session he played that week was for songs touching on the subject of a person who broke the writer’s heart. He thought to himself, ‘What does it look like once you’re done grieving and you’re ready to move on? You’ll look back at your catalog of music and realize you’ve been writing about the same person and now you’re sick of giving them that attention, So that’s what we wrote about. ‘Not That Deep’ comes from the perspective of a person who’s done thinking about that passive tweet; who’s ready to burn the shirt they were bought, who’s over writing songs about their heartache, and—most of all—is done letting someone else have power over them.”

The Chicago singer will be in Minneapolis on Feb 16th, at the 7th Street Entry, co-headlining with Minneapolis-based Austin Carson, aka YYY (not to be confused with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs).

Singer-songwriter Alice Phoebe Lou released her new album Child’s Play. If you didn’t know, she was born in South Africa, but left the country at the age of 18 and began busking her way through Europe, wowing passers-by with her stunning vocals and captivating songs. Her debut album Momentum came out in 2014, followed by her album Orbit in 2016.

With the release of Child’s Play, there will be a full tour.

Local all-girls band Bruise Violet (named after a Babes in Toyland song), will be playing the 7th Street Entry this Feb 15, playing with RiGBY and EVV.

We saw Bruise Violet at Rock the Garden in July 2017 and said, “From rap to punk, Bruise Violet dressed up for the occasional, complete with snakes on their microphone stands. This was a special show for the trio (guitarist Emily, drummer Danielle, and bassist Bella), as it was Danielle’s 21st birthday. She happily wore a sash that read “Birthday Bi****: 21 and hot, buy her a shot”. Starting with ‘Talk S*** Get Hit’, followed by ‘I Cried for 45 Minutes Because of Passive Aggressive Guinea Pigs’, you can just tell that the young band was inspired by riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill and Babes in Toyland (which is actually where they got their band name from). Danielle mentioned that their ‘A**** Song’ was written when she was 17, before playing something a little more recent, like ‘Teacher’ from their new EP Trophy Wife (2017) and ‘Wasted’ from Survival of the Prettiest (2015).”

Recently Japanese experimental noise band Boris released their two-track Christmas single called Noël, via Sacred Bones. The B-Side is a take on Wham!’s classic “Last Christmas”.

The story behind “Noel” is that it’s a reworking of “Pardon?”, originally from Boris’ New Album (which incidentally celebrated its 10th Anniversary this year). London’s singer-songwriter Lauren Auder worked with French producer Dviance, for “Noel”.

Lauren talked about working on the song, “I’ve been a long-time fan of Boris's work and ‘New Album’ has been particularly influential on my musical style. When this came up, Atsuo from the band proposed I take a shot at making a new version of the track. I was at the time working on my debut full length with my long-time co-writer Dviance and knowing how much he has also been inspired by Boris's work it only made sense for us to work on this one together. I'm extremely excited for this to have come together and hoping to continue this collaboration in the future.”

Both tracks are available exclusively through Bandcamp.
