Dream pop legends The Ocean Blue will be releasing their first new album in six years called Kings and Queens / Knaves and Thieves on June 21 via Korda Records, a Minneapolis-based cooperative label.

We’ve known about the band since their debut record Between Something and Nothing on Sire Records. We bought and became fans, thanks to their faithful cover of The Smiths’ “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” from their single Peace and Light.

California’s Red Steppes (stylized as red steppes) is the stagename for singer-songwriter Nika Aila States. Her new record Arcs will be released on May 31st via Native Cat Recordings.

Here’s the description they sent in for the album:

red steppes’ debut A Mouth May Grow was rooted firmly in the topography of California; her sophomore release Arcs (Native Cat Recordings) is the fruit of a series of displacements, disturbances, and reorientations. Stylistically diverse, the album delivers minimalist guitar pop, mathy folk, and even a Peter Gabriel-tinged meditation on loss, finding equilibrium in songwriter Nika Aila States’ intimate vocals. Arcs is plush with the kind of photographic lyricism States began exploring with A Mouth May Grow; songs fondly addressed to lovers are mindful of an inevitable transience, lullabies keep account both of the world’s smallest gestures and its great ruins, and a series of scenes unfold as a prayer of sustenance, a knowing salutation aimed at fellow travelers and sailors-by-the-wind.

“White Gemini” is the new song (taken from the album Aisle of Palm) from New York producer and multi-instrumentalist Beshken. The song is about the life of American astronaut Ed White, the pilot of the Gemini IV space mission and first human to walk in space on June, 1965. The song, samples from recorded conversations between White and the command center during both EVA and the Apollo test.

Of the single, Beshken says: “I believe that the motivation behind space travel, besides the pure novelty of being where nobody has been before, is to push humanity forward both philosophically and technologically. In order to further expand upon some of the feelings I have about human progress (or lack thereof), technology, and the environment, I decided to write a song about White. A passionate explorer, he willfully distanced himself from both the stability that our home planet provides as well as the problems that it yields.”

Grammy Award winner John Paul White (not to be confused with John Paul Jones) released his new solo album The Hurting Kind today (April 12) via Single Lock Records. The new single, “I Wish I Could Write You A Song,” premiered via CMT in celebration of the release.

White will also be kicking off a 2019 US tour.

If you’re not familiar with his live show, we caught the singer at Basilica Block Party 2017 in July and wrote, “John Paul White (better known as formerly one-half of folk duo The Civil Wars) was next, White coming out first alone, commenting “If you’re wearing a suit, then you’re warm” in the late afternoon sun…. White’s quiet and mostly sad songs seemed a little out of place on a festival’s big outdoor stage next to a highway (“that’s a first”, he quipped), but for the patient and attentive, the dividends were abundant.”

Master rock singer-songwriter-guitarist Nils Lofgren is famous for being a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, Crazy Horse, and frontman of Grin. Recently, it was announced that Lofgren will be releasing Blue With Lou, a dozen of collaborated songs with the great, late Lou Reed.

The story behind the album, according to Lofgren, is that the two wrote and worked on the music in Reed’s New York apartment. It laid to rest, until Reed called Lofgren up at 4:30am:

Reed: ‘Hey, Nils, it’s Lou Reed. I’ve been listening to the tape you sent, and I love it. I’ve been up for three days and nights straight. I haven’t slept. I’ve been working on your tape. I’ve completed 13 sets of lyrics that I love.’

Lofgren: ‘You’ve gotta be kidding me.’

Reed: ‘If you wanna get a pad and pencil, I’ll dictate them to you.’

Of course, the song remained in their private collection, until after Reed’s death in 2013, Lofgren entertained the idea of putting those recording to an album. He says, “They got left by the wayside. Years went by, and it kept nagging at me. I thought, look, Lou’s not here to deliver these lyrics. He was inspired when he did this. It would be a shame not to share it.”

This May, Nils Lofgren will kick off a US tour in support of Blue With Lou:

The girls from Miss World (Natalie Chahal) and (Laura-Mary Carter) have formed the new band Shit Girlfriend.

Their latest single is called “Dress Like Cher”, available exclusively as a splatter vinyl for Record Store Day (via PNKSLM Recordings).

In related news, Chahal released her debut LP Keeping Up With Miss World, while Blood Red Shoes released their fifth album Get Tragic on their own Jazz Life label earlier this year. We’ve seen Blood Red Shoes a few times, and their last appearance in Oct 2018, we said, “Brighton’s Blood Red Shoes opened the show, the stage completely lit in a deep green (which remained unchanged throughout their entire set), possibly due to the fact that the artwork for their forthcoming 2019 album Get Tragic is also in the same green tone. They didn’t play any of those 2019 songs, it’s really not the time to start promoting those singles, but instead concentrated on their various hit singles.”

‘International Blue’ is the first new release from legendary UK band Manic Street Preachers. The single arrived this week (8th December 2017) and is taken from their 13th studio album Resistance Is Futile (Columbia/Sony Records).

The single was inspired by the city of Nice in the mid winter sun and the life’s work of French Nouveau realisme artist Yves Klein.

Nicky Wire explained “I’d been digesting the lyric for five years, since being in Nice and finally joining the dots between Yves Klein’s International Klein Blue and the vast open blue of the Mediterranean Sea. It was a moment of connection that felt perfectly natural – not forced or intellectualised. A different kind of enrichment that feels increasingly difficult to find. The track itself is carried by the kind of naïve energy that powered ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’”.

James Dean Bradfield added “Often I just need a great title to set me off. Seeing the word blue struck a chord and set off memories of pure pop records we grew up with – things like the ‘Story of the Blues’ by Wah!, ‘Moon is Blue’ by Colourbox, Orange Juice’s ‘Blue Boy’ and’ In Bluer Skies’ by Echo and the Bunnymen….”

I’ll confess, I love White Town’s ‘Your Woman’ when I discover the song ten years ago (even though the song has been around since 1990): “I got distracted by this awesome song called "Your Woman" by White Town. I couldn't shake that AWESOME hook he has in the song. I knew it was an older-sound, I was guessing like Amadeus, but as it turns out, it was a 1930s song by Al Bowlly called "My Woman" (very clever, Mr White Town!)”

Coming up on December 20, 2017, White Town (aka aka Joyti Mishra) will be reinventing his one-hit song as ‘Your Woman 1917’… as if the song was recorded 100 years ago. I understand the reason for this, as the original Al Bowlly that he sampled was written about 100 years ago, so it would make sense if White Town existed back then, that his song ‘Your Woman’ would sound with natural orchestra and acoustics (note: no electronic guitar or dance beats). While the re-imagined song sounded just fine (maybe a little slower and easier to understand the lyrics), it missed the whole point on why the original ‘Your Woman’ song is such genius. The main reason why I love ‘Your Woman’ is that it combines music from a hundred years ago with cheap techno dance beats; it’s something you don’t really expect in a pop song at all.

White Town will be playing a rare London gig this Friday, December 15th, at St John On Bethnal Green church, supporting Haiku Salut’s Christmas Lamp Show.

We previously saw the Louisville group in 2015 and noted, “I couldn't help but be completely captivated by keyboardist of White Reaper. I don't think there was a second where this guy was standing still. He was all over the stage and it was honestly hard to keep track of him because I wanted to watch everything else going on at the same time. He seemed to be a bit of a goofball and would play the keys with his teeth and lick the bass guitar in between songs. It sounds dumb but it really did add to the fun factor of this show. Like I said, if the band looks like they are having fun, the crowd is more apt to have fun.”

Introducing: Old Red. Their debut song ‘Catalonia Weekend’ is available now.

According to project leader Dashel Hammerstein, “Old Red is a project that began when I found out that my long-lost cousin was a virtuoso jazz guitarist with a recording studio in rural Connecticut. He started producing and engineering new versions of some old songs of mine with the expressed intention of making them weird. We agreed that if it sounded familiar, it wasn’t worth putting out. Sessions were all about more noises, more programmed drums, more hair band guitar solos, mistakes that were fine-tuned into something intentional. Overall I just wanted the music to be more funny.”

“Cut to November and we have a short album worth of songs, all thematically tied together under the umbrella of life in Modern America. ‘Catalonia Weekend’ is in some ways an exception, but the kind that proves the rule. The Spanish Civil War was unglamorous, even by the standards of war. Troops were so low on ammunition and supplies that they would often arm one solider with a megaphone, tasking him with yelling across the battlefield to enemy trenches in an attempt to convince them with words. It actually worked more than one might think. Tie that to Modern America as you see fit.”

“The song itself is unabashedly poppy. Like the rest of the album, I’ve tried to strip away all but the meaty hooks of the song. Life’s too short.”

Seattle-based The Flavr Blue (fronted by Hollis Wong-Wear, famous for appearing on ‘White Walls’ by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis) recently shared their new remix video for ‘Top Down’ featuring The Last Artful, Dodgr with Hip Hop DX. The video was filmed in Portland and directed by Ikaika Cofer / Tiki.

The Flavr Blue comments, “We got to perform with Dodgr at last year's Upstream Music Festival in Seattle and were totally blown away by her, so it was an honor that she asked us to get on Top Down. When we were finalizing the album, we decided it'd only be right for her to be featured on the LP beyond a one-off remix since she adds such a dope vibe to the record overall.”

Although Red Hot Chili Peppers has been around since the early 80’s, but like me, you probably didn’t know them until the early 90’s. That’s because RHCP’s two songs ‘Give It Away’ and ‘Under the Bridge’ were all over the airwaves in early 90s (particularly 1991-1992).

I remember the music videos fondly, and will confess to actually picking up Blood Sugar Sex Magik and their previous record Mother's Milk around this time of music discovery.

13 million records sold and 25 years later after BSSM, and the funk band is still going strong with one of their biggest tour this year, in support of their new album The Getaway, which came out June 2016. The record debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart and #2 on the Billboard Top 200.

London’s White Lies will be touring the U.S. this 2017 in support of their fourth album Friends. The band was previously known as Fear of Flying, but in 2007, the band took a ‘darker sound’ and became White Lies.

The group will be stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis in February. Opening up the show will be Vowws (not to be confused with New Jersey’s Vows). Vowws is an Australian/Iranian Industrial-Pop duo (Matt & Rizz).

Boston’s trio Blue Plutos (Ryan Agnew, Tyler Agnew, Mat Lundin) described their new song ‘Immediate Engagements’ as a “warm blast of gauzy guitar-based rock.”

The song is taken from their October 2016 record Moon Language, and based on the title and band name, I would probably categorize them as space rock, like Spiritualized (which is what I described them in an article).

Ryan Agnew explains ‘Immediate Engagements’, “As far as the writing of the song, we wanted to write a song that was really straightforward but also kind of chugging at the same time. I was listening to a lot of Beach House and you will know us by the trail of dead... while we were recording it which I think is reflected in the production of the song. The riff at the end of the song is a very fun one to play and was written separately but fits well - it also has a really nice solo from Tyler.”

As of January 2nd, the band announced that their record Moon Language is available on cassettes.
