It’s not a good sign for spring when members of the opening act and headliner sport ski caps in the middle of April. At least no one wore mittens while playing their string instruments.

Barbaro opened the evening with most seated except for Jason Wells on the upright bass. The setup lent itself to a cozy atmosphere with the members attune to each other as if the songs were not completely set, giving the four members room to explore.

Kyle Shelstad (guitar) and Isaac Sammis (banjo) first started off as a bluegrass duo. But when Rachel Calvert (fiddle) and Wells joined, the group began to evolve for the additions came from a more classical background. In fact, Wells was not even familiar with the bluegrass when he signed on.

Barbaro’s music was not so much a display of technical dexterity found in most bluegrass bands as much as cooperative effort to accommodate the different viewpoints with Shelstad, Calver and Sammis sharing singing duties and Calvert and Wells creating at times an almost cosmic, ethereal sound. The whole effort felt as intimate as a campfire and as vast as the stars.

Rachel Baiman was joined on stage with Lauren Horbal on drums, Jacob Groopman on guitar and Steve Hann on bass.

Born and raised in Chicago, Baiman became attracted to the traditions of folk and bluegrass while attending Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She decided to stay and became a fiddler-for-hire who eventually evolved into a singer-songwriter.

Lyrically, Baiman may have absorbed the views of her left-leaning parents, but musically she is all in on the country spirit of her adopted home. For example, the song “Shame” from her 2017 self-titled album is an ebullient affair even if the topic is about the corrosive nature of fundamental religion. Also, you can clap along to “Self Made Man” even if you don’t want to root for the protagonist.

Baiman is promoting her new album On Common Nation of Sorrow but don’t think it’s a lament, as Baiman told the Nashville Scene: “It’s not a protest album so much as a statement of solidarity.”

In between songs Baiman took the opportunity to converse with the audience with topics ranging from how many geologists were in the audience (3) to the correct term for the study of insects (entomology). And since it was a cold night, she asked if ice fishing was really a thing (it is) and how a seventeen hour road trip through a snowstorm ended up in Reno, Nevada (not fun in her opinion).

Cold or not, Baiman was having fun at the Cedar. And for an encore she brought out Barbaro to try an acoustic set. It gave the appearance of being a spontaneous moment as if the show was already over and the two bands had found a nice cozy campfire to pick away the evening on their string instruments.

The co-headlining tour of Ryan Traster and Newski will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on April 13th.

The press release of the year, for me, was for Newski’s disastrous unlicensed pop-up concert at Chipotle.

“We played an unlicensed show at Chipotle and everyone hated us,” says NEWSKI.

Everything that could go wrong did, for Wisconsin’s jangle pop rock outfit NEWSKI on their spontaneous and unlicensed performance at Chipotle; the guitar fell out of tune, no free burritos were rewarded, and nearly everyone in the place was pissed off.

I thought it was funny enough that I shared it with the W♥M team. Even if the story was made up or overly exaggerated, it made us notice and we like a band with a sense of humor.

I did some digging, and apparently this trio features Steve “Mr Bicep” Vorass on drums, Sean “Tubs” Anderson on 4-string, and led by Brett Newski on guitars and vocals.

Funny enough, we have seen Brett before, at the Violent Femmes show in July 2016, which we described, “Brett Newski opened up the show with his improv-ish songs. Very fun guy, really witty. Highlight of his set was getting an audience member to help play harmonica during ‘In Between Exits’. He ended his brief 30-min set with ‘D.I.Y.’... and newfound fans in the front started to sing along to his catchy lyrics, “I’m D.I.Y., I’m punk as f***. Don’t need your money, I don’t want your love.” Newski also tend to swap out lyrics to make his song more personal and timely. For example, he name dropped The Replacements in the mixtape lyrics on ‘D.I.Y.’”

Nashville’s Fruit Bats (Eric D. Johnson) is currently on tour in support of A River Running to Your Heart. The record will be available April 14 via Merge Records.

“Over the years there's been a lot of geography in my music, a lot of landscapes,” Johnson says. “Sometimes the places are real, sometimes they're emotional. I've always liked the idea of songs and albums that exist in a continuum with one another. I'm not talking about some kind of deep series of concept albums, mind you. More like the idea that my songs are all pretty much tributaries of the same river. Which makes a lot of metaphorical sense because my path has been long and winding and often slow and muddy. But always moving towards the sea…. I guess you could say this album is the one where I took all that emotional geography and kind of mapped it out.”

We saw Fruit Bats in Oct 2015 and said, “Johnson’s honeyed voice was perfect, rivaled only by the dreamy strum of Barker’s guitar and gentle whirr of Klippert’s keyboards. Folk-pop gems like fan-favorite “When You Love Somebody” (from Mouthfuls) saw many people singing the famously quirky lyric, “When you love somebody and bite your tongue all you get is a mouthful of blood.” Blood, bats, love and folk - I couldn’t have asked for a better precursor to Halloween.”

We saw Trapper Schoepp in May 2017 and said, “As a former resident of Green Bay, I was charmed to learn that Trapper Schoepp’s newest EP was written all about the city’s Bay Beach, an east-side amusement park nestled on the bay that happens to be celebrating 125 years of existence this year. Schoepp treated the Turf crowd to a performance of Bay Beach Amusement Park in its entirety with help from Shades bandmates Justin Krol on drums, Quinn Scharber on guitar, brother Tanner on bass/vocals and a 3-piece horn section lovingly called “The Horns”.”

We love the Canadian band Stars. You guys know that. The band released Capelton Hill in 2022, and now that it’s safe to tour and travel… the band will touring towards Austin City Limits. They’ll stop by the Fine Line in Minneapolis on April 15th.

We caught Stars in Dec 2018 and wrote, “As for Stars, you guys already know that I love the band since Nightsongs in 2001. I got into Le Grand Magistery Records and bought almost everything that they released, including Baxendale, Momus, Stereo Total, etc. I was listening to Stars since their humble beginning, but unfortunately, the band really didn’t do heavy promotion until Set Yourself on Fire in 2004 to 2005.”

Update: Lydia Persaud was recently announced as support for this 2023 tour. The last time we heard from her, she released her album Moody31. The record is a collection of reflections on lessons learned in love and growth as she entered her thirties.

Brooklyn’s indie pop band Daisy the Great (Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker) will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on April 16. The group recently recently shared a new version of “Tell Me Have You Been Dancing” remixed by and featuring vocals from indie pop artist Claud.

“We were so happy to have Claud remix our song. We love Claud, and it was such an honor to have their voice and their production on this song. The original is off of our latest album All You Need Is Time, and it's about missing someone that you’ve loved. Claud layered a lot of the vocals and created some beautiful canons that really bring out the way your thoughts swirl when you never really stop thinking about someone that you had to let go of.”

Dan Wilson’s Re-Covered is out now. The unique album finds the Grammy-winning songwriter reinterpreting songs from his past, including a re-interpretation of his Semisonic band’s hit song ‘Closing Time’.

If you follow Wilson’s career, after Semisonic, he started writing hit songs for other artists, such as songs for Taylor Swift (‘Treacherous’) and Adele (‘Someone Like You’)… so, for the first time, we get to hear how Wilson would approach his own songs.

In addition to the album, there is also a deluxe edition CD with hardcover book, which contains drawings, essays, lyrics, and songwriting observations about all those songs he’s written.

The tour kicks off next Friday, September 22nd, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul.

All sisters band Joseph (named after their grandfather) is returning to Minneapolis at First Avenue’s mainroom this Saturday. Their new seven-track EP, Stay Awake is available on ATO Records. The collection features some demos, singles, and covers of Tears For Fears’ ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ and the Rolling Stones’ ‘Moonlight Mile’.

We previously caught the sisters (Natalie, Allison, and Meegan) in 2014 and noted that they have great harmonizing vocals.

Bailen, also a sibling band (twins David and Daniel and their sister Julia) will open the show.

Wild Cub is playing the Triple Rock Social Club on Saturday, September 23rd, in support of their sophomore album Closer (Mom+Pop).

The last time the band was in town, they opened up for Bleachers in 2014… this time with Closer the band is headlining.

Show up early to check out Parade Of Lights. We caught the electro-rock quartet in 2015 and wrote, “Singer Ryan Daly’s hair has even turned golden since we last saw them, with keys/synth player Michelle Ashley bringing plenty of enthusiasm while bass player Randy Schulte and drummer Anthony Improgo ably held up the back end. For whatever reason, this band that plays bright, sunny electro, was lit as dimly as London’s Underground during the blitz, making for a strange dichotomy that seemed counter to their music, though the songs themselves, remain irresistible.”

Should be a great night of music.
