On my original music schedule, Alaska native Quinn Christopherson was supposed to open the show.
I later found out that Christopherson won’t be joining the Wild Hearts Tour, until Chicago (August 10), because he would be busy opening for the Here and Now shows, featuring Courtney Barnett and Lucy Dacus. We did catch him at the Here and Now show at The Midland on August 8th, and wrote, “The music began with rising Anchorage singer-songwriter Quinn Christopherson, whose debut full-length, Write Your Name in Pink will be released September 16 for a half-hour set, accompanied by only his guitarist and beginning with the title track from his I Am Bubblegum EP. “My family has been telling stories forever, and this is how I tell mine”, Christopherson explained after the new “Celine”, a touching song about his mother.”
Anyway, the Surly Brewing Festival Field, which is next to the Surly Brewing Co. tavern, is one of the few open-air venues in the Minneapolis area. From our experience, we have Rock the Garden (at the Walker Arts Sculpture Garden), Basilica Block Party (currently on hold due to the pandemic), Music in the Zoo (currently on hold), and Cabooze Plaza (at the parking lot at the Cabooze)… so there’s not a lot of active/current open-air options.
The nice thing about the Surly Brewing shows is that they will open up a disused weighing station for free self-parking. I don’t know the capacity, but I am assuming you must arrive early to get a parking spot… otherwise, if it’s full, I am assuming you are on your own.
Fans showed up early to see the Wild Hearts Tour, which almost everyone buying Wild Hearts Tour-branded T-Shirts and tote bags!
Julien Baker started the show. She commented that the last time she played the Surly was with the all-women show Courtney Barnett and Lucy Dacus in July 2018. She was still new the music scene back then, and we commented it as much: “When we saw her in 2017, we described the then-15-year-old as “shy” and her songs were being “drowned out by the chatty crowd”. Seeing Baker, nearly a year later, I can tell you that she’s more confident and taking command of the stage. She’ll sometime scream on some songs, which can be such a powerful thing to hear from this very young singer. To be honest, the crowd loved her. She’s really built up an audience here, and fans were listening and cheering to everything Baker had to say. For example, she mentioned the word “women”, and the girls in the audience cheered loudly.”
Baker continues to build up her fanbase here… and it should be interesting to seeing her with other strong women, like with Phoebe Bridgers’ boygenius project.
Angel Olsen was next. Everyone in the band dressed in mono-color, with Olsen in banana yellow. The first thing she commented on was how bright the sun was… clearly not used to playing in the day time. “Look at that. The sun. It leaves nothing to the imagination,” Olsen stated. After a brief pause, “But my thoughts are my own. My thoughts are mysterious. You don’t know what I’m thinking!”
We haven’t seen Olsen since Oct 2017, and after five years, our statement, “Angel Olsen has a voice that makes knees weak, blind men see and dreams come true” still rings true.

It’s good to have Sharon Van Etten back. She looked and sounded as she did eight years ago… as if she never left. Starting with “Headspace” and “Comeback Kid”, it’s like she’s telling the story of her own journey. She is the comeback kid.
Van Etten’s new album, We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong, is out now Jagjaguwar.
