Twin Citie’s alt rock/grunge band Oister Boy is having an album release party this July 9th, at the 7th Street Entry.

Opening will be Present Company… who we previously mentioned that they released their sophomore, self-titled album in Jan 2022.

Present Company is also playing Chicago in Illinois on June 15 and Grand Rapids in Michigan on June 17.

Also Killed By Kiwis is also on the bill. The band was previously seen with Products in Mar 2023.

Armenia-born and Los Angeles-based breakthrough singer/songwriter Rosa Linn is out on her American Daydream tour. Her new song “Hallelujah” – available now via NVAK Collective/Columbia Records.

Detroit post-punk band Protomartyr is back on tour… this time in support of their album Formal Growth In The Desert (Domino Records).

We saw the band in Mar 2016 and said, “Protomartyr’s music has a post-apocalyptic quality about it. Drummer Alex Leonard’s percussion is dry and unyielding, Scott Davidson’s bass is menacing and singer Joe Casey’s world-weary poetic ramblings conjure up images of a desperate, chaotic world. These songs, however, are not death waltzes to throw yourself into the grave to; rather they are anthems of survival. The quartet (Leonard, Davidson, Casey and fantastic guitarist Greg Ahee with his Fender Telecaster Thinline) walked on to the Entry’s famous stage and proceeded to hold the rapt sold out crowd in the palms of their hands. The intensity of the performance increased as the night surged on with powerful renditions of “Dope Cloud” and “The Hermit” from last year’s The Agent Intellect and “Scum, Rise!” From the band’s second album Under Color of Official Right (2014). But it was the two closing numbers that really made jaws drop: “Clandestine Time” followed by the chugging “Why Does It Shake?” (both from The Agent Intellect) saw the band completely lose themselves in the reverb-saturated sound.”

We were supposed to see Blondshell with Suki Waterhouse in Jan 2023, but due to bad weather, the show was postponed. The new date is now August 3, 2023, and the venue has been upgraded to First Avenue. Unfortunately, due to conflicting schedule, I do not believe Blondshell will be opening for the August show (since logistically, she'll be in California around this time).

As the Twin Cities celebrated a record high temperature for mid-March, folks at the 7th Street Entry celebrated a seriously great Saturday night triple bill: two stellar local bands, D||E and The Cult of Lip, and moody Detroit headliners, Protomartyr.

D||E is a four-piece consisting of former members of Fire in the Northern Firs and active Hollow Boys member/Ecstattic Studios owner and engineer Ali Jafaar - they’re also a band I’m looking forward to hearing more from. They released an EP last spring and are working on getting out a proper full length (aptly titled UFOs Satanic Terror). The band’s sound is hypnotic, very much rooted in space-y 70s rock.

I’ve seen already seen The Cult of Lip at least twice this year (they opened for Ringo Deathstarr earlier this month) - I even saw them when they were known as VATS (how about that, right?) The trio features Hannah Porter on bass - recognize the name? That’s because she also plays in two other excellent bands, Brilliant Beast and Panther Ray. I love Cult of Lip for their fuzzy, free-wheeling, ear-drum-destroying noise-rock and you should to.

Protomartyr’s Setlist

Protomartyr’s music has a post-apocalyptic quality about it. Drummer Alex Leonard’s percussion is dry and unyielding, Scott Davidson’s bass is menacing and singer Joe Casey’s world-weary poetic ramblings conjure up images of a desperate, chaotic world. These songs, however, are not death waltzes to throw yourself into the grave to; rather they are anthems of survival. The quartet (Leonard, Davidson, Casey and fantastic guitarist Greg Ahee with his Fender Telecaster Thinline) walked on to the Entry’s famous stage and proceeded to hold the rapt sold out crowd in the palms of their hands. The intensity of the performance increased as the night surged on with powerful renditions of “Dope Cloud” and “The Hermit” from last year’s The Agent Intellect and “Scum, Rise!” From the band’s second album Under Color of Official Right (2014). But it was the two closing numbers that really made jaws drop: “Clandestine Time” followed by the chugging “Why Does It Shake?” (both from The Agent Intellect) saw the band completely lose themselves in the reverb-saturated sound. Casey himself, at first somewhat reserved and professor-like in his tweed jacket, jerked back and forth, incapable of holding back and punctured the air with the lyrics, “Why does it shake?/The body/Why does it move?/The fear.”

Protomartyr is heading to SXSW this month before bouncing from the US to Europe and back again this summer; their latest release is called The Agent Intellect.

Last October, the Detroit quartet released their third LP The Agent Intellect, a collection of dark, punchy post-punk that has made quite a splash with fans and found its way onto many year-end lists. I can’t wait to watch frontman Joe Casey, gifted with slate-gray vocal chords that reference both Black Francis and Nick Cave, spit out lyrics like, “Your passive mind that thinks/‘Perhaps my ship's come in’/That's not gonna save you, man/That's not gonna save you, man” while guitarist Greg Ahee creates a melody that shivers and flows. The song is “Dope Cloud” - go listen! Then go see Protomartyr on Saturday March 12th!

Punk band Titus Andronicus (not to be confused with the William Shakespeare’s play) will be in town in support of their latest album The Most Lamentable Tragedy, which came out in 2015 via Merge Records.

Opening up will be local favorite Craig Finn (singer of The Hold Steady). We’ve seen Finn several times and will tell you that he has a ton of fans locally in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. I would not be surprise to find out that more than half the audience were there for Finn, at this coming Saturday show.

Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers will be headlining a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis this Saturday, March 12th. The event is at the Muse Event Center, which is right next to the Aria, in Minneapolis. Additional details at withonebreath.org

We previously caught Clyne in November 2015 and wrote that Clyne will play old The Refreshments songs: “It wasn’t just Refreshments tunes getting folks riled up; the Peacemakers have been happily pumping out catchy Western-flavored records for years. The audience worked up a sweat for rockers like “Americano” and “I Don’t Need Another Thrill” (from 2004’s Americano!) and “Never Thought” (1999’s Honky Tonk Union) while the slower-paced set closer “Green & Dumb” cooled things down to a gentle sway (the encore also included “Maybe We Should Fall In Love”.) The band’s new album The Independent was also well-represented within the setlist: “I Ain’t Got the Words,” “California Breakdown,” and “5x5” sounded lively and crisp, so much better in person.”
