Leeds’ English Teacher is touring America in support of their debut album This Could Be Texas. If you’ve already bought the album, thanks to it being shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize, they are also releasing a five-track EP Live From BBC Maida Vale available digitally via Island Records on August 30, 2024.

I have previously commented on generic band names, that it’s impossible for you find them online… so, personally speaking, I don’t like their name. Previous Industries is the new project from Open Mike Eagle, STILL RIFT, and Video Dave. The group is on tour in support of Service Merchandise (Merge Records), and will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on September 27, 2024.

While most music fans will be familiar with Open Mike Eagle, the “art rapper” who is also a comedian/podcaster on the Comedy Central series The New Negroes… you might not know Still Rift or Video Dave. The three are friends, bonded over their love of Hannibal Buress and Serengeti. The trio have previously work on various projects.

Man, you know we love Moon Hooch, ever since we saw them in 2013. The band was famously “discovered” by They Might Be Giants and personally asked them to open for them their 2013 tour.

We finally caught them as headliner in Oct 2016, and wrote, “You already know the secret origin of Moon Hooch. The band was busking in the street of New York City Subway stations and caught the attention of They Might Be Giants, who asked them to go on national tour with them…. As previously mentioned, the dance floor was packed, especially for a Sunday night. The fans in front absolutely loved the funk and danced and raved throughout the night.”

Boston’s Tiny Habits are artists Maya Rae, Cinya Khan and Judah Mayowa. The three singer-songwriters met at Berklee College of Music and the band was born at the beginning of 2022.

We saw Deerhoof in March 2015 and wrote, “Based on the longer than usual opening set (55 minutes), this was a co-headliner tour, with Deerhoof first on stage. If you've never heard of Deerhoof, they are a San Francisco band with a wide mixture of sound, from art-punk to pure pop to avant-garde to minimalistic to noise.... their music sounds just as strange as the band, currently fronted by Japanese singer/guitarist Satomi Matsuzaki. ”

Local band Products Band (previously known as the generic Products) is one of the opening band. Taking the stage was Karl Remus on vocals/guitars, Warren Thomas Fenzi on drums, Bailey Cogan (aka 26 Bats!) on keys, Christian Wheeler on bass, Daniel “Chavo” Chavez on trumpet … and for this live performance, they’re joined by Dave on guitars (I didn’t catch the last name when they were introducing the band near the end of their set). The group is part of the record label/collective Kremblems. ”

The English musician, writer and broadcaster was a former legal professional, she has studied at both SOAS and The University of Cambridge… and in her free time, she released music under her stagename Throwing Shade. When she released her debut album Weighing of the Heart in 2017, she went back to using her birth name.

The tour is in support of her sophomore album Dreamer, which came out in April 2023 on Ninja Tune.

Atlanta-bred rock band Algiers are touring in support of their fourth album Shook (Matador Records).

The band will play the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, fresh off their appearance at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

We saw Algiers in Sep 2021 and said, “Originally formed in London, with the release of “Blood” in 2012, via Double Phantom Records, Algiers (singer and pianist Franklin James Fisher, bassist Ryan Mahan, guitarist Lee Tesche, and drummer Matt Tong) is based in Atlanta, and produces some interesting dub-style sound, industrial, and Afrobeat sound. Some songs sounds political, but all their songs are explosive, as seen in their live performance. Bassist Ryan Mahan seemed ready to explode. This just shows me that the band is very passionate about their music and their message.”

Minneapolis’ Products recently announced that they’ve signed to Los Angeles label Solid Brass Records. Perhaps it’s to make their name more Google-friendly, it would seem they’re now listed as Products Band as an official band title… but I’m assuming everyone will likely just call the band ‘Products’.

They’ll be a new album, set for release in 2023 from the new label… stay tuned for more details.

We caught Products in July 2021 and wrote, “Local band Products (Alex on guitar, Jo on vocals, Konner on drums, and Jack on bass) played a quick 30-min set, mostly containing songs from their album Pink Puma. The band recently released a single, “(On Top) A Y'all Tower Of You” yesterday (July 26).”

They promised they’ll be playing new songs off the new record at this upcoming Turf Club show on March 30th. The openers listed for the show is Sass and Killed By Kiwis.

Also, Products are super excited to be playing with their heroes Deerhoof on July 8, 2023. Yes, we like Deerhoof, having seen them a few times … the last time in Georgia in Aug 2016: “Thursday evening’s festivities reached their peak when Deerhoof took the stage at the Georgia Theatre. Singer/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki didn’t just play music during this performance; she led a musical pep rally. She commanded this crowd to dance, wave their arms and Come See The Duck, and they happily did her bidding.”

Can’t wait to see the Deerhoof/Products team-up in July.

We caught Ber in Dec 2022 and wrote, “Ber aka Berit Dybing then took the stage but with some minor complications. That’s what makes 7th Street Entry such a fun musical venue. It’s an incubation tube for new bands and those bands are their own roadies, and they are only a few feet from the audience as they set up their equipment. For a time the band worked on connecting Mike’s (drummer) ear piece. Then Ber’s main mic wasn’t working, which was an important piece of equipment for a lead singer. No matter. Ber was game and set aside any awkwardness by chatting and taking selfies with the crowd.”

We previously mentioned the local indie band Present Company for their sophomore, self-titled album release party in Sep 2022: “Minneapolis indie band Present Company is having their sophomore, self-titled album release party this September 9th at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. The group was originally started by Christian Nelson and Eddie Chisham (songwriting, vocals, guitar, keys), but later joined by Seth Lemmon (bass) and Berin Joseph (drums).”

Highly influential protest singer Ani DiFranco is making a return to First Avenue this January 24, 2023. Her previous First Avenue show, set for August 21, 2021 (as mentioned in July 2021) was canceled due to COVID concerns. DiFranco is making up for lost time with this January 2023 show… which actually kicks off her 2023 tour.

The feminist icon and Grammy winner is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of her seminal first live album, Living In Clip (Righteous Babe Records). In addition, you can get the 25th anniversary remastered edition of the landmark double album on this tour, as well as online through her website.

Also, look for DiFranco’s children book The Knowing, out March 7, 2023, via Penguin Kids.

Turnout for the Black Pistol Fire at the Fine Line Music Café on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, was incredibly packed! This is great news, as traditionally, if the Fine Line was half empty, it would feel incredibly empty, simply because of its layout. So it was really nice to see a filled dancefloor and full balcony of guests.

It’s been over a year since we last saw Wire at Fine Line, before the pandemic shut down the city. While the venue remain unchanged, it would seem that First Avenue (the owner) has installed metal detectors at all their locations. The dectors are only large enough for one person, meaning if someone wishes to exit, you have to wait until they go through before sending someone to enter.

Local band Products (Alex on guitar, Jo on vocals, Konner on drums, and Jack on bass) played a quick 30-min set, mostly containing songs from their album Pink Puma. The band recently released a single, “(On Top) A Y'all Tower Of You” yesterday (July 26).

I have previously commented on generic band names, that it’s impossible for you find them online… so, personally speaking, I don’t like their name. Of course, as punk as they are, they’ll never change their name.

Look Alive Summer 2021 Tour

Austin duo Black Pistol Fire is seemingly very grateful to be back touring, especially because their “Look Alive” Summer 2021 tour is going so well… having sold out a few venues, including Emo’s in Austin. I don’t think the Fine Line show was sold out, but it sure felt like it, seeing as how packed the venue was. Still, it’s probably still a much better experience than their upcoming Lollapalooza appearance(s).

We first saw the band in Dec 2017 and wrote, “The duo (Kevin McKeown-guitar/lead vocals and Eric Owen- drums) had been getting great word-of-mouth regarding their live performances and proved it again this night, working themselves and the restless, head-bobbing crowd into a near-immediate lather with their blend of dirty garage blues rock starting with their incendiary opener, ‘Lost Cause’.”

Black Pistol Fire’s started off with a couple of new songs from Look Alive, starting with “Look Alive” (with its catchy chorus “Chasing white lines in my Psycho 69”) and “Pick Your Poison”. This was followed by a fan-favorite “Suffocation Blues”, from their debut self-titled album.

With the exceptions of a few tracks, the majority of the second half of their set were taken from their new album. No surprising, considering this was the Look Alive tour. My favorite of the new songs was actually “Always on My Mind”, which does start off slow, but it has a nice buildup and I like its pace.

My favorite of the set was “Speak of the Devil”, which had guitarist Kevin McKeown doing all sorts of face-acting as he played guitars. At times, it felt as if the guitar itself was singing lyrics only Mckeown understands.

It’s good to have live music back in the city, and Black Pistol Fire would agree. Their new album, Look Alive, is available now via Black Hill Records.

We last saw her with Troye Sivan Oct 2018 and wrote, “Petras played her debut hit single “I Don't Want It at All”, and based on the brother and sister and others, in front of my seat, she’s got quite a few fans. 21-year-old Atlanta-based singer-songwriter and Yo-Yo enthusiast Faye Webster will be headlining the 7th Street Entry in support of her new album Atlanta Millionaires Club (Secretly Canadian).

You may recall that we saw her in March 2019 and mentioned, “She actually did a Father cover song, called “Cheap Thrills”, converting the rap/hip-hop song to something pleasant and muzak... although it did sound a bit weird when Webster sings “We’re nowhere near a lake, but I can still get you pretty wet.””

I’m also happy to see that Jenny O. will be opening. What a good pairing.

Ever wondered whatever happened to A.A. Bondy? We last saw him in person in Mar 2009… Well, according to the singer, “In 2012 I quit making music and joined an MDMA surf club in Los Angeles. Years passed. People died. I drank heavily and started meditating. I fell in love with Anita Baker.”

He started writing music again in late 2016 and the result can be found on his new album Enderness. A.A. Bondy will be touring in support of the new record, stopping by the 7th Street Entry this June 20th.

Mary Lynn Rajskub (aka Chloe O'Brian from 24!) will open. Just trivia, but my current phone ringtone is the CTU sound! Personally speaking, I really, really hated the “Chloe with the Dragon Tattoo” that her character became in 24: Live Another Day.
