Canadian post-punk band Preoccupations headlined the Turf Club in St Paul, in support of their new album Arrangements (Flemish Eye/Jagjaguwar).

Opening the show was Cindy Lee, a one person performance, from the ashes of Women. Women, of course, was the band that members of Preoccupations (then Viet Cong) came from. Currently, with this tour, it appears that it is all Patrick Flegel (brother of Matt Flegel from Preoccupations) is the only person in the band.

Cindy Lee sings over prerecorded soundtrack from What’s Tonight to Eternity?, with occasionally picking up the guitar to add some additional notes. The songs sounds like something of an electroclash version of 60’s girlpop or girl gang songs.

There was a cover of Chad VanGaalen’s “Burning Candle” on the set. It made sense, as Cindy Lee and VanGaalen, as well as Preoccupations, are on the same record label, Flemish Eye… so it’s all related somehow.

The thing with Preoccupations (singer/bassist Matt Flegel, guitarist Scott Munro, guitarist Daniel Christiansen, and drummer Mike Wallace), is that as great as they sound, they can’t get out of the shadow of their original controversial name of Viet Cong. The name was offensive to South Vietnamese and Americans who fought in the Vietnam war. With protests at some venues, including their first appearance in Minneapolis, at 7th Street Entry, in Sep 2015, the band did the right thing and changed their name to Preoccupations, stating “We are a band who wants to make music and play our music for our fans. We are not here to cause pain or remind people of atrocities of the past.”

With that behind them, the band has released three albums under the Preoccupation name, the self-titled album, New Material and their 2022 album Arrangements. The new album is actually their best album to date, leaning more in rhymic chords, that they’ve described as “labyrinthine post-punk”.

The band must really love the new album, as the first part of their set was devoted solely on Arrangements. The remainder of their set seemed to draw mostly from their debut record, Viet Cong (“March of Progress”, “Silhouettes”, “Continental Shelf”, and “Death”)

Riot grrrls/girl grunge band L7 is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their breakthrough third album Bricks Are Heavy with a special tour.

The tour kicks off Oct 3… and will stop in at First Avenue on October 17th.

What you can expect is that the band will play the entire record from start to finish. If you love the record, this is the must-see show of the year.

You can also pick up the Bricks Are Heavy reissue from Licorice Pizza Records… set to release later this month.

After a completely sold-out North American tour run earlier this year, Canadian band Rare Americans is back on tour in support of their new album You're Not A Bad Person, It's Just A Bad World (Empire Records).

This time around the themes of isolation, anxiety, trepidation, imminent self-annihilation, fear of totalitarianism, and general malaise unintentionally all feel a little more relevant than they have in the past. I guess that’s not a great sign, but I think we’ve taken this culmination of dark things, and turned it into something that can happily be listened to loudly, and that is maybe even…fun?”

Minneapolis-based band FènixDion will be releasing their debut album Sugar on October 21st. The record release party will take place on October 23rd at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.

You can hear their debut single, “Mama Say”, as well as “Morals Might Bite”, and others on the upcoming show.

The band is the brainchild of Keston Wright and drummer Sam Bramble, but when they play live, it’s a full band, featuring Atom Lee and Mitchell Johnson on electric guitars, bassist Gavin Taylor, and percussionist Nii Mensah.

Talking about the band’s name Keston explains. “That’s why I wanted to name the project FènixDion, because of the archetype of the Phoenix: burning away all that doesn't resonate within you, so you can be reborn into your truest self. I think a lot of people went through that in 2020, letting go of all the sh** that does not matter. So that's what I’m focusing on now: my truest self, moving forward, and trying to fly.”

Nashville’s Palm Ghosts (Benjamin Douglas on guitars and vocals, Walt Epting on drums, Joseph Lekkas on bass and vocals, and Jason Springman on guitar and vocals) is described as “the sound of an 80s prom in a war zone.” If that sounds like your cup of tea, then be sure to see them at Mortimer’s Bar in Minneapolis. Additional details about the band: “Palm Ghosts has a long history, as Joe has carried the name since his Philly days when the project had an indie folk sound. But, it is the current iteration of the band that sounds more like a clap back to the sound for which Nashville is notorious. Embracing their 80’s idols, like New Order, The Cure, David Bowie, John Carpenter and even Divine, these Nashville transplants released 2018’s Architecture. Libertyville’s Ike Reilly, and his band, The Assassination, will be heading out on tour this fall in the Midwest in support of his new album, Because the Angels. The record was released by Nashville-based label Rock Ridge Music and was recorded at Reilly’s own Diamond City Studio in Libertyville, Illinois and Fat Studio in Grayslake, Illinois.

The always entertaining Foals, from Oxford, UK is back, out in support of their latest full-length, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1 (Warner Bros/Transgressive Records) and took their live performance to literal new heights, with a raucous show in Minneapolis at First Avenue.

The evening’s triple-bill lineup began with a buzzing trio from Atlanta, Omni (Philip Frobos, ex-Deerhunter guitarist Frankie Broyles, with live drummer Chris Yonker- perhaps named after the now-demolished Georgia arena?), who just signed to Sub Pop’s new Singles Club, playing both new songs, ‘Delicacy’ and ‘I Don’t Dance’, and more during their brief opening set.

The trio plays an antsy and addictive blend of post-punk rock, sharpened by staccato riffs and cerebral arrangements and is working on their third full-length, visibly happy about their recent signing and the chance to be on this bill. From the enthusiastic reception gauged, expect the band back, when the new record completes.

Calgary’s Preoccupations was up next (Matt Flegel- vocals, bass; Scott Munro-guitar, synth; Daniel Christiansen- guitar; and Mike Wallace- drums), with their own darker blend of self-described "labyrinthine post-punk" in support of third full-length, New Material (Jagjaguwar Records).

The band began their thirty minute set with the foreboding drum beats of ‘Newspaper Spoons’, from their 2015 debut full-length, when their band was named something more controversial. The moniker change and new musical material are welcome, providing a sense of rebirth, and their set played like one long piece, with bursts of white noise or droning sounds, filling the space between tracks.

With a stage decorated by assorted palm plants and vertical lighting, set in front of a large banner with emblazoned stone lions that complement the new album’s cover, Foals began their ninety-minute set list with the new ‘On the Luna’. Restless singer/guitarist Yannis Philippakis emoted, “we had it all, but didn’t stop to think about it” then didn’t give the crowd any time to catch its breath, seguing into 2015 hit, ‘Mountain at my Gates’ with everyone gleefully clapping along.

The band (huge in Europe and elsewhere, so we are lucky to see them in clubs here) has an aggressively prolific rest of the year planned, traveling all over the world and playing most major festivals, including headlining their hometown Truck Festival, and is releasing their companion follow-up album in September, “They’re two halves of the same locket,” Philippakis explains. “They can be listened to and appreciated individually, but fundamentally, they are companion pieces.”

The band (Philippakis along with Jack Bevan- drums; Jimmy Smith- guitar; Edwin Congreave- keys; and touring bassist Jeremy [Everything Everything] Pritchard) is already very musically tight, leading smoothly from 2008’s ‘Olympic Airways’ and Philippakis chanting “re-a-ppear”, directly into 2013’s breakout jangly hit, ‘My Number’.

Foals’ musical style is nearly indescribable, deftly melding several styles into something unique, similar in scope to Talking Heads and late cellist Arthur Russell, and the ambitious new two-album work, is perhaps their most focused and accurate mirror of the band’s vision to date (from a listen to Part 1 anyway).

The solemn ‘Spanish Sahara’ found Philippakis pleading to “forget the horror here” with the narrator all-knowing as “the ghost in the back of your head” with the singer then asking himself out loud on the new ‘Syrups’, “won’t you find a way from me somehow?”

New single ‘Sunday’ is apocalyptic in theme, but still extols finding the needed time to clear your head, and ‘Exits’, which is still getting regular airplay locally, sounded even more urgent live, its lyrics of powerlessness set against a nontraditional, complicated and highly effective musical math-rock arrangement.

The bouncy, synth-heavy new ‘In Degrees’ and the driving rock of ‘White Onions’ moved into the main set’s closer, ‘Inhaler’, with Philippakis asking the crowd beforehand, “Are you ready?” to riled up cheers as the band fired up the 2013 song, with ferocious energy. Oddly, photographers were only allowed to shoot the last few songs of the show, instead of the standard first three, and the reason why, became very clear with the encore.

As the bustling crowd chanted the band’s name to help goad them back (“you guys have been awesome tonight!”, Philippakis remarked) the singer briefly waxed nostalgic about playing to a sparse crowd next door their first time here in 2010, before shredding into 2015’s ‘What Went Down’, with the real story being what went up. Philippakis jumped into the front pit with guitar not once but twice, causing a frenzy, then making his way up the venue’s right stairs to rest on the balcony rail.

“Feisty bunch, aren’t ya? You want it to get a bit spicy tonight” Philippakis asked during the set-closing “Two Steps, Twice’ as the crowd clapped along, himself taking two steps off the edge and then a balcony dive down into the left side crowd, as applauding hands supported him and carried him safely back to the stage for an amazing finish.

With Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost, Foals finds itself purposely on its next creative level as a band- with their live shows already legendary, and a good handful of memorable songs, it’s only a matter of time before America catches up to the rest of the world, making this band an even more major draw. From the capacity crowd on this night, no one was lost, they were all musically saved.

We caught Saint in October 2018, and wrote, “Morgan Saint’s set is full of very personal and heart felt song, as an example “Glass House” was introduced as, “this is my most personal song I’ve ever written.” The song is about being broken, and asking someone to understand. You get a sense that the person does not respond to the protagonist, even though the song is demanding love (“F**king love me now, love me now, love me now”).”

We saw Bayonne in April 2017 and mentioned, “Opening up the show was Austin’s Bayonne, the stagename for one-man-band Roger Sellers, with a brief 30-min set. Armed with headphones and using various loops and pre-recorded beats, combined with raw vocal performances and sometime live instruments, Bayonne was able to recreate some unique songs. The last time we saw The Drums, it was in 2014: “Riding in on a spectacular wave of beachy, bittersweet synth-pop, The Drums established a dedicated following with 2010’s self-titled and 2011’s Portamento; two records that practically sound like a greatest hits, each song better than the last. The band is currently touring behind their most recent release, Encyclopedia, and while there have been a few line-up changes since they were last in town, yesterday evening found them in fine form.”

Ah, the mornings are beginning to be met by a cool autumn breeze...so this must mean desert festival season is under way! Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists, and this year is no exception. With Tame Impala headlining, it could in fact be the best one yet.

I could enumerate on how this festival is, in my opinion, the Mecca of all festivals, but it is really something to be seen by the own eye to truly comprehend. Along with bizarre instillations and an entire village complete with meditation tent and tea ceremonies, this isn’t just a music festival…it’s an Extraterrestrial Festival.

The California-based festival run by Jjuujju’s guitarist Phil Pirrone has an impressive lineup this year featuring Tame Impala, My Bloody Valentine, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (also a returning band), Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, Shellac, Ty Segall & White Fence, Warpaint, Earth (performing The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull), Malcom Mooney of CAN, Steve Albini, Connan Mockasin, Pond, and Julia Holter, Earthless. There are always surprise guests and DJ’s along with plenty of mind-enhancing activities to attend in between shows.

English dream-pop band Slowdive has recently been added to the festival, which will by far be one of the most sought-out performances of the weekend.

Canadian post-punk band Preoccupations headlined the 7th Street Entry on Sunday, April 29th.

Opening the show was Victoria, British Columbia’s Freak Heat Waves. The trio, led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Steven Lind, with bassist James Twiddy, and drummer Thomas DiNinno, played a set of songs from their third album Beyond XXXL (Telephone Explosion), including the singles “Self Vortex” and “Toxic Talk Show”.

Calgary, Alberta’s Preoccupations headlined the show. If you didn’t know, they originally formed as Viet Cong in 2014, but with a show cancellation from Oberlin College because of their “offensive name” and several boycotts (including the local Vietnamese community at the 7th Street Entry in September 2015), the band reached out and came to the right decision to change their name. The band wrote, “We are a band who wants to make music and play our music for our fans. We are not here to cause pain or remind people of atrocities of the past”.

Now that the controversy is behind them, the group, featuring Matt Flegel on vocals and bass, Scott Munro on guitars and synth, Daniel Christiansen on guitars, and Mike Wallace on drums, is just happy to write and play music to fans again. With their new album New Material (Jagjaguwar Records), based on hearing the new songs live, is that it’s more focused on rhythmic bass and thumping. Combined with the random odd experimental sound, the music is quite hypnotic and flow easily from song to song.

An interesting choice of an old song “Select Your Drone”, which started their set, really set the tone of their show. The song was actually released on cassette-only limited release in 2013, when they were still known as Viet Cong. The rare release may have been lost to time, but the band felt their drone-y/garage pop song was so good, they re-issued the record under their new name last year.

Canadian post-punk band Preoccupations (singer / bassist Matt Flegel, drummer Mike Wallace, guitarist /synth Scott “Monty” Munro, and guitarist Daniel Christiansen) just headlined the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on October 4th in support of their self-titled 2016 album.

Perth’s Methyl Ethel opened up the show to a very slow build of ‘Shadowboxing’ to a darkened room. Their music started to pick up, and with that, the lights shined brighter.

According to the singer/guitarist Jake Webb, talking about Minneapolis, “What a great city. It’s our favorite city in the United States! We’ll come back if you’ll have us again.” Having played in New York and Chicago, we can only imagine that Minneapolis’ less crowded and friendly attitude probably factored in why they love it here (I think they’ll quickly change their name once they see the snow...).

Methyl Ethel’s debut album Oh Inhuman Spectacle is out now on 4AD internationally.

If you’re not familiar with Preoccupations, this is the new name for their previous cultural insensitive Viet Cong name. In fact, it was on the eve of their Minneapolis show in 2015 that the band announced that they would be changing their name after talking to Vietnamese Minneapolis protesters. Look, at the end of the day, the name change was the right move for this young band, as it shifts focus from unwanted controversies to actually listening to their music.

Now as Preoccupations, and with a new self-titled album from Flemish Eye and Jagjaguwar, sounded fresh and slightly more aggressive than their debut dream/shoegaze 2015 Viet Cong album.

Things got off to a rock start, as Matt Flegel’s microphone did not initially worked. It was fixed right away, and with that, the band started playing selections from both bands, starting with newer Preoccupations tracks, like ‘Silhouettes’, with a big middle chunk from Viet Cong. The group ended their set with the satisfying ‘Death’ song, playing what sounded like an extended outro.

Preoccupations’ self-titled album is out now on Jagjaguwar.

The best/worst band name Goblin Cock will be taking over the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis next Monday, October 3rd, in support of their new album Necronomidonkeykongimicon (Joyful Noise Recordings). The record is described as “a crushingly brutal Dear John letter to society” by frontman Lord Phallus (aka Rob Crow of Pinback).

You may recall that we reviewed their album Come With Me If You Want To Live in 2009 and noted that they aren’t necessary “metal”: “Some of the songs on this album sounds too clear and sounds too slow to be classify as metal. On those songs, they seem more like early 90s grunge music (think Soundgarden, not Nirvana).”

Nightosaur and Busey to open. We caught the latter at a Guitar Wolf show in Sep 2016 and said that they sounded metal (but they were clearly big fans of garage/Ramones-style rock).

South Africa’s all-brothers band Kongos will be headlining the Varsity Theater on October 4th.

The Joy Formidable will open the show. They recently released a digital EP Sleep Is Day with all profits being donated to SOS (the Sumatran Orangutan Society). Singer Ritzy Bryan explained, “We read a tweet by the naturalist and conservationist Bill Oddie. He was lamenting the destruction of the lianas in the orangutans' natural habitat. We have a song on our EP called "Liana" and once we started reading about the crisis the orangutan was facing, it set the wheels in motion for us wanting to raise some money.”

Anyway, they did the right thing, they’ve changed their name when so many Vietnamese and Veterans complained about it. Eliot Sumner is returning to Minnesota this October 4 at Studio B (inside the Skyway Theatre). We’ve previously mentioned how uncanny Sumner looks like her father, Sting, when we caught them at the Turf Club in St Paul (June 2016).

Eliot Sumner’s latest Information is the debut album under their name, Sumner was previously recorded as Coco at the early age of 17.

My Jerusalem is listed to open the show. In 2013, we wrote that My Jerusalem is from from Austin, by the way of New Orleans (and not from not Israel). My Jerusalem’s latest record A Little Death is available now on Washington Square Music.
