Australian band Pond is returning to the Minneapolis area on December 7th.

We caught the band in Oct 2018 and said, “Fresh from their recent appearance at Desert Daze, Australia’s Pond (not to be confused with American 90s band Pond) has sold out their 7th Street Entry appearance. It shouldn’t be a surprise, given how hot psych rock is at the moment... and the fact that Pond’s members are also in the incredibly popular Tame Impala.”

Son Little (aka Aaron Livingston) recently released his new album Like Neptune on ANTI- Records in September. He’ll stop by the Turf Club on December 8th to promote the record.

Son Little recently released the final pre-release single, “inside out,” the follow-up in a string of gorgeous singles - “deeper,” “stoned love,” and “6 AM.” On “inside out,” Son Little said, “It came to me very quickly and feels very natural. I looped up the piano and drums and then freestyled into this echo chamber effect and voila.”

No surprise, but The Lemonheads recently sold out the UK and Ireland tour, as they perform It's A Shame About Ray in its entirety for the 30th anniversary of its release.

With the North American dates about to begin on November 17th, tickets are selling out fast.

We last saw The Lemonheads in May 2019 and said, “As you know, I first came to being The Lemonheads fan around the time they were promoting It's a Shame About Ray with its title track as single in 1992. They were featured on MTV’s 120 Minutes, but frontsman Evan Dando seemed more popular in the UK (I hate to say it, but for a time, it just felt like the Lemonheads were ignoring the USA).”

Psychedelic rock band Pond (Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson, Joe Ryan and Jamie Terry) is played the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday, October 24th.

Opening the show was Denver (but based in Los Angeles currently) Sur Ellz, with, “a brand new setup”, referring to his music machine. His style is laidback soul with lots of loops and beats.

The new music setup had its problem, as on his last song, he had some technical difficulties and the song was delayed... but it didn’t really go over the given 30-min time slot.

Fresh from their recent appearance at Desert Daze, Australia’s Pond (not to be confused with American 90s band Pond) has sold out their 7th Street Entry appearance. It shouldn’t be a surprise, given how hot psych rock is at the moment... and the fact that Pond’s members are also in the incredibly popular Tame Impala. What else can we add about the 7th Street Entry show, is that given a headlining time, the band can stretch out their songs, almost jam-like. It’s not uncommon for a five minute song to become ten minutes live. Again, starting with set intro song “30,000 Megatons”, the boys rocked with leader Nick Allbrook doing some of his most funkiest dance moves.

The group mostly played songs from their seventh studio album The Weather, including their title track as set closer.

The palm trees were a blowin’ and the wind was dusty and warm on Friday as music lovers loaded into the Lake Perris campgrounds for Desert Daze’s seventh psychedelic wonderland of American music festivals. Founder Phil Pirrone (Leader of band JJUUJJUU) has gone above and beyond to make this entity, in whatever category you want to put it under, entirely separate from your standard music festival. Year after year, he manages to succeed and surpass expectations, galvanizing us with the joy and euphoria that this celestial event brings. It’s more than just a weekend. It’s an experience of a lifetime.

Set up this year in Lake Perris, California, on the grounds of beautiful beaches with breathtaking mountain backdrops, it was less of a desert mirage than in its past Joshua Tree days…which seemed to suit festival goers just fine. There was a rather stark contrast of ear-piercing rock music amidst this stunning scenery, but in a way, it just made sense that people were swimming on unicorn floaties while listening to the tunes of Cut Worms or Julia Holter. The installations scattered around-from teepees with hanging seashells formed into jellyfish to a space-ship treehouse on stilts-gave everyone something to marvel at in between sets or even all day, if one felt so inclined.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12

Certainly a favorite on Friday was Yonatan Gat and the Eastern Medicine Singers. Gat has a rather interesting story as a musician. After being banned from playing in his homeland of Israel (refusing to partake in mandatory experiences like the Israeli army), he relocated to New York and started producing music. He began recording and performing as a bandleader, and in 2014 released the Iberian Passage EP, a debut that maintained his signature raw energy while switching the focus away from the shock-performance style of Monotonix to a more improvised, shamanic musical exploration. This is what we got a taste of here, as Gat graced us with the brilliance of tracks from his latest album, Universalists.

After Yonatan’s solo set the trio of fringed moccasin men hit their drums and belted out their chants into the crowd, while everyone circled around them in amazement. Then Yonatan ran down to join them, wailing on his Guild guitar as they collaborated in what one could only call an indigenous ritual that was meant to make the heavens downpour with rain, it was so spiritual (this concept will make more sense later). The Eastern Medicine Singers are an Algonquin language, Eastern-Styled drum group dedicated to preserving the Eastern Woodlands music. Adding Yonatan’s insane guitar skills creates a sound so powerful that it transcends you into another time, another life, another dimension in a way that no drug or substance can.

This is another thing that give Desert Daze such a rare quality in the lineage of music festivals…you don’t have people that party too hard and are obviously too drunk or stoned to be in public. It’s just not like that. Sure, people are there and there are drugs and gods are golden. But people actually do dig the music and I think, overall…are pretty much only there for it. To correlate with this theme, it may indeed be 2018, but here at Desert Daze it is essentially like walking onto the set of the film Almost Famous. Bell-bottoms, rose-colored glasses and sideburns are running amuck and thankfully, Penny Lane is right there beside him, Sherpa coat and Robert Plant hair intact. But it’s not contrived, heavens no…it all seems to be conducive and genuine to each person swaying their hips and closing their eyes to the music. An idyllic sight to behold, indeed.

Ah, Warpaint. These girls just get better and better as the years go by. I don’t know whether they’ve turned into witches or slightly older versions of the characters of the movie Now and Then. Whichever one, all of them have more charisma, talent and style than most of us mere mortals roaming the planet. Emily Kokal’s haunting vocals soared with Jenny Lee’s harmonies and badass bass skills on The Stall, as their opening to the set. It’s crazy to think that their self-titled album came out 5 years ago, and their first full length album Exquisite Corpse almost a decade ago…but these girls certainly stay busy in and out of the studio. They rocked Keep it Healthy, Love is to Die and Krimson (my personal favorite), before ending with their hit track Elephants. “I need a little room to sway”, indeed. And don’t ever let us go.

Tame Impala started their set off strong with the groovy tune Nangs off of 2015’s al-bum Currents. Let it Happen was next, and from the pit I heard the eruption of “Whoa” and “Wow’s” from the crowd, and at first it seemed like it was maybe in response to the trippy background effects behind lead singer Kevin Parker. I quickly realized it was the sky illuminating with lightning bolts above us. Sure enough, halfway through Sundown Syndrome (ironic much), a producer came out and announced that they had to stop. Kevin kind of shrugged and said “I guess we gotta stop.” and they all ran off the stage. As the sound guy was assuring us that this was just a break, the gods opened up a black hole in the sky and dumped buckets and buckets of rain onto us. Torrential downpour ensued (insert indigenous rain dance ah-ha moment here) and everyone started running to their cars to “wait it out.” This did not happen, and eventually there was an attempted evacuation of the camp…everyone was told to go home or (if camping) to get a hotel room. People, suffice to say, were pissed!

Kentucky’s White Reaper is back in town in support of The World's Best American Band (Polyvinyl Records).

The last time we saw them in 2015, we noted, “I couldn't help but be completely captivated by keyboardist of White Reaper. I don't think there was a second where this guy was standing still. He was all over the stage and it was honestly hard to keep track of him because I wanted to watch everything else going on at the same time. He seemed to be a bit of a goofball and would play the keys with his teeth and lick the bass guitar in between songs. It sounds dumb but it really did add to the fun factor of this show. Like I said, if the band looks like they are having fun, the crowd is more apt to have fun.”

No Parents will open.

English shoegazing band Slowdive is back in Minnesota. The trio (Rachel Goswell, Simon Scott, and Neil Halstead) now has added two additional players: Nick Chaplin and Christian Savill.

We previously caught the band when they re-formed in 2014 and wrote that it was one of our most memorable shows from October! Since the band played Minneapolis on Halloween, they were all dressed up in costumes: “Anyway, Halloween shows are always fun, because half the fun of watching the band is also watching the audience for some great costumes. Usually bands will come on stage in costumes, but for Reading-based Slowdive, they went all out! Not only was everyone, including the audio techs and sound engineers, dressed up, but they went the extra mile and dressed their stage with various Halloween fun like cobwebs, handmade pirate flags, skulls, pumpkins, candies! This tells me the band are really committed to show us a good time!”

Japanese Breakfast to open. We saw the band in Sep 2016 and wrote, “Japanese Breakfast played their new album, Psychpomp, from front to back which was definitely a treat. These guys have a super unique and fun sound but and to be able to hear and see them play this in album in its entirety definitely raised the bar. None of the songs sounded the same which was refreshing. Each song had a different feeling to it and a different energy. There's some slow songs, almost ballad like songs, some fast ones, and their signature closing song about falling in love with a robot that has a very electronica feel to it.”

We saw the Wooden Sky in 2015 and said, “Canada's The Wooden Sky was up next, playing songs from their latest album Let's Be Ready, which Dena called "soothing and upbeat". While they mostly just played straight through their set, they did pause a minute to dedicate "Baby Hold On" to the Replacements and how three members of the band went to see them on their first show in Toronto.” 7pm, $15.

05/02/17 The Pines is playing at the great Hopkins Center For The Arts in Hopkins, Minnesota. We previously saw the Pines in 2013 and wrote, “The mellow night started off with special guest Dave Simonett, of Trampled By Turtles, doing a solo set. In contrast, The Pines had a full band with them. Then about four songs into their set, they added a mandolin player, as well as a cellist. It was really funny, because the scarecrow they had behind them almost fell down a couple times. I have seen them about three times, and I have to say it was a good performance. They commented on how they love playing at the Cedar.” 6pm, $25.

05/02/17 Australia’s Pond is back at the Turf Club in St Paul. I believe the last time they were in town was in 2014 with Doctopus. This time they are bringing fellow Australian Kirin J Callinan. 7pm, $15.

Here are shows taking place in Minneapolis/St Paul on October 25, 2014.

Strangely enough, two cancellations on this Saturday, Fat White Family (the singer tends to strip naked during his performance) and The Horrors. Since both bands are from England, you might think it's a Visa issue, but as far as I know, Fat White Family is currently in New York... perhaps taking advantage of CMJ all weekend long. Also, Irish band Kodaline has canceled their appearance for Sunday, 10/26, due to a broken arm.

Check out this rare appearance by Japanese-born/Paris-based sound artist Ryoji Ikeda at the William and Nadine McGuire Theater this Friday (10/24) and Saturday (10/25). If you enjoy experimental noise artists like the Boredoms, or even Sonic Youth, you might want to check out Ikeda.

The upcoming Ikeda's "Superposition Performance" is about 90-minute performance of part noise and part art: experimental, synchronized video screens, and, for the first time in Ikeda's work, human performers!

Since the performance contains high decibel levels, I recommend bringing some earplugs, just in case.

The thing about Perth, Australia's Pond is that three band members is actually in another, more successful Australian band Tame Impala. Although, it would seem that Pond has an ever-rotating band lineup - especially when they play live.

Pond is currently on a USA on tour, surprisingly not in the States for CMJ. The band also recently announced their new album Man It Feels Like Space Again, coming out January 27th, 2015.

The cover artwork is by Ben Montero and the band also noted that for the LP, it will be a die-cut out sleeve showcasing inner sleeve Freakazoid Mural.

Opening up the show will be Doctopus, no relationship the Spider-Man villain, is also from Perth, Australia.
