Los Angeles’ Seratones is returning to the Twin Cities, at the Turf Club, on August 24, in support of their new album Love & Algorhythms (New West Records).

We saw the band in May 2016 and said, “Combine various ingredients of all kinds, add additional spices and seasonings, then let simmer. Shreveport, LA band Seratones was recently in town on the very day their debut album, Get Gone (on Fat Possum Records) was released, and the results were very similar. The quartet (AJ Haynes –vocals/guitar, Connor Davis-guitar, Adam Davis-bass, and Jesse Gabriel-drums) has been gradually gaining buzz- Winning a Louisiana Music Golden Microphone prize in 2013, getting notice from Paste and NME and showcasing at this year’s SXSW Festival in Austin, TX. Though sometimes compared to Alabama Shakes, the band is purposely more rough around the edges, and adds more of a garage punk/blues trait to their music, for the comparisons to run too deep.”

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Parker Millsap is returning to the Turf Club in St Paul this August 25th.

We saw him in September 2021 at the Turf Club and wrote, “ We first saw Parker Millsap at SXSW in Mar 2014, and described him as “an Oklahoma native brought up in the Pentecostal church … with lots of songs about religion. Old time feel and a great version of "You Gotta Move", a Rev Gary Davis song covered by the Rolling Stones on Sticky Fingers.” A lot have changed with the fifth album Be Here Instead, which marked a stylistic shift from folk / old time music to more experimenting with pedal effects and drums focused. This may have something to do with his departure from writing all his songs with his guitar and notebook, to asking his live band to work with him. The album was also produced by legendary John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, Waxahatchee), who helped brought in Nashville singer Erin Rae, for Millsap’s song “The Real Thing”, making it the #1 song on the Americana charts.”

Los Angeles’ Dirty Honey came highly recommended, when they played the Uptown Theater in Kansas (13 Mar 2022) and Riot Room in Kansas (15 Feb 2020): “We knew right away Los Angeles band Dirty Honey was headed to bigger and better things. The buzz was already palpable when we caught them live pre-pandemic at the smaller (and now closed) Riot Room and the band has exceeded those expectations, releasing their self-titled debut album (on Dirt Records) last year as a follow up to their successful 2019 EP. A modern melding of ‘70s-era Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Faces, peppered with some Black Crowes, the foursome (Marc LaBelle– vocals; John Notto- guitar; Justin Smolian- bass; Corey Coverstone -drums) had the crowd at their command from the beginning, opening with the new album’s first song, “California Dreamin’” and into “Heartbreaker” that had the fans singing the chorus back at the band.”

Now, Dirty Honey will stop by Minneapolis, at the Fine Line Music Café this August 26, 2022, as part of their “California Dreamin Tour”.

We previously saw singer Monica Martin with Phox in Feb 2017: “PHOX took to the stage after a brief set change, starting with 2014’s chilled, piano driven ‘Leisure’ from their one and only self-titled full length (on PTKF Records)… The band plays an often delicate blend of folk and pop, mixed with soul, rock and psych, and is anchored by the lilting vocals of singer Monica Martin. Monica Martin is currently on tour, stopping by the 7th Street this August 26th.

Sadly, the PHOX hunt will be over shortly… at least for now. 

After what seems like just yesterday when Baraboo, WI group PHOX was full of buzz, fresh from making a major splash at South by Southwest in Austin; the band decided on an indefinite hiatus last October, but not before a short farewell tour, which landed them at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. 

Friends and musical cohorts from Brooklyn/Philly (via Boston), Cuddle Magic opened the evening, a collective  that plays simple yet complex alt-chamber pop, peppered with woodwinds, brass, and Casio keyboards.  Think the experimental sounds of Talking Heads, Dirty Projectors and St. Vincent, and you’re in a similar wheelhouse and new album Ashes/Axis (northern Spy Records) just dropped at the end of last month. 

A set highlight was when most of the six-piece moved into the center of the floor for a hushed and spare version of 2010’s ‘Expectations’, added pep into songs ‘Kiss Me’ and ‘Somebody’s Speaking for Me’, and played a couple of Bawa-music inspired newer songs, formed when the band’s Benjamin Davis was in Northwest Ghana with Lake Street Dive’s Bridget Kearney including the set-closing, album opening ‘Slow Rider’.

PHOX took to the stage after a brief set change, starting with 2014’s chilled, piano driven ‘Leisure’ from their one and only self-titled full length (on PTKF Records).  A couple of the members of Cuddle Magic would join in sporadically and intermittently throughout their ninety-minute set, to help give some welcome and added body to the songs.

The band plays an often delicate blend of folk and pop, mixed with soul, rock and psych, and is anchored by the lilting vocals of singer Monica Martin.  The first half of the set especially, seemed loose and friendly, almost like being present for a basement rehearsal, but the band would tighten things up, as they went. 

Even the printed setlist was just a loose template, with the band adding a few additional songs in, along the way.  ‘Evil’ had toe-tapping vocal harmonies, Martin laughed casually causing ‘Shrinking Violets’ to re-start as she described the tropical shirt she found backstage to wear, and ‘Slow Motion’ perhaps their best-known song, was done about halfway through.

Following that, Martin took the reins for a solo turn, which included ‘Liquor Cabinet’ a song done for the band’s own film, Amor Fati (available on YouTube) and songs with Cuddle Magic joining on the already crowded stage. 

‘Laura’ built itself into a towering crescendo, followed by a pitch-perfect cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’. ‘Noble Heart’ enhanced by some clarinet and trumpet help from Cuddle Magic members, had a jagged, feedback-filled guitar break in the middle, before it returned to its chill form. 

An Aaliyah cover further proved Martin’s dexterity as a vocalist and final song, ‘Espeon’ was written with Martin’s sister Bianca in mind. The song’s lyric, “And when our teeth fall out of our skulls, best believe I'll recall all the days of our youth” seems appropriate for a band taking an indefinite break.

In true quirky form, Martin’s last words to the crowd were “tip your bartenders, punch a Nazi” and knowing that they’re just over in nearby Wisconsin, hope we see PHOX again sometime, and sooner than later.

Looking over their Facebook, I get the impression that this may be the final Phox (pronounced like “fox”) tour.

The Wisconsin-based band first came to our attention in August 2014, when they came to town in support of their self-titled debut record (Partisan Records).

Show up early to check out Cuddle Magic, a six-piece avant-pop band (Benjamin Lazar Davis, Christopher McDonald, Dave Flaherty, Alec Spiegelman, Kristin Slipp and Cole Kamen-Green), not exactly from Brooklyn and not exactly from Philadelphia... but somewhere in between.

Ashes/Axis came out January 27 on Northern Spy Records.

Los Angeles’ folk-rock band Dawes is back in town, this time billed as “An Evening With Dawes”.

The band features brothers Taylor (guitars and vocals) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums), along with Wylie Gelber (bass) and Lee Pardini (keyboards).

The last time we saw Dawes, they were Conor Oberst’s band, in June 2014 ... and they played whatever the Bright Eyes guy wanted to play! The “three-hour evening” was incredible.

How we described the 2014 show: “The three-hour evening was opened by Los Angeles-based Dawes, who considers Minneapolis one of their strongest markets, in a solid hour-long set of their own. The band opened with a string of new classics, ‘Most People', ‘Time Spent in Los Angeles’ and ‘If I Wanted Someone’, in front of a raving receptive crowd, that connected with singer Taylor Goldsmith’s storytelling lyrics. The band humbly downplays the love given by Minneapolis, though could likely sell out anywhere locally, if they decided to ever do an extended residency.”

Originally scheduled for the Varsity Theater, the event was moved to the Pantages Theatre. Tickets sold for the Varsity Theater event will be honored at the door at the Pantages Theatre. Ticket holders for the Premium seats (sold as Mezzanine seats at the Varsity) will be directed to the Premium seating section on the main floor in the front rows.

Seating is not reserved, so show up early and grab a close-up seat.

Welwyn Garden City’s rock/punk band The Subways will be in town next Saturday, April 23rd, in support of the self-titled album (their fourth album). For the US tour, the trio (Billy Lunn – guitar, vocals; Charlotte Cooper – bass, vocals; Josh Morgan – drums) will be selling specially numbered LP edition of their record.

They’re quite proud of their new record, Lunn explained, “100% The Subways, it’s all us, we wrote, produced, and mixed the album ourselves.”

Opening will be Manchester’s five-piece Pins. We previously saw the all-girls band and wrote that they “lived up to their moniker, playing a sharp, diamond-in-the-rough hour-long set at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.”

Both Picture (Portrait) Parts 1 and 2, came out March 25th, via The Homestead Records/Amble Down Records.

Both Tori Amos at the O'Shaughnessy and Broken Bells at the State Theatre ticket costs about $40 each... if that's out of your price range, come check out The Apache Relay and Jenny Lewis at First Avenue on August 3rd.

Since many of you may know Lewis' name as actress (various film & television roles) and singer of Rilo Kiley and Jenny & Johnny, you may not know opener The Apache Relay.

The Apache Relay are based out of Nashville, and they will be playing tracks from their new self-titled album, which is out now via So Recordings.

I got a chance to hear their single, "Katie Queen of Tennessee" and it sounded great! You will find yourself humming to the melodies.

Indie-pop band PHOX (pronounced 'fox') are playing the 7th Street Entry this Monday, August 4th. Expect the Wisconsin-based band to play tracks from their self-titled debut album, which came out June 24th via Partisan Records.

PHOX's single, "Kingfisher", was made iTunes Singles of the Week for the week of July 8th, which made the band quite happy. Band member Zach Johnston talked about the song, explaining that the song was "about longing for a certain person romantically and then realizing that you may have invented the whole infatuation in your head. Who knows how things would have turned out had you actually been in a relationship with this person..."

Dana Janssen is currently playing under the stage name Dana Buoy. Dana Buoy is currently heading out on tour in support of his new 2014 EP called Preacher.

It should also be noted that most of the dates with Sylvan Esso have sold out. The band was recently in Minneapolis at the second annual 10 Thousand Sounds Music Festival, which we caught the "up-and-coming dreamy indie-folk duo" last year, when they only had a handful of songs.
