The NY Times writes: “Meat Loaf, who was born Marvin Lee Aday and took his stage name from a childhood nickname, had a career that few could match. He was a trained Broadway belter and a multiplatinum-selling megastar whose biggest hits, like “Bat Out of Hell” and “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” were radio staples — and barroom singalongs — for decades. ”
On the same day that Meat Loaf died, was Brazilian singer Elza Soares who had a massive following in Brazil, after being re-discovered in the 90s.
Younger music fans may be sadden to learn that Rachel Nagy, the singer from The Detroit Cobras had died at a very young age.
Country DJ Ralph Emery and country musician Dallas Frazier, both died relatively close in dates to each other.
Doo-woper Five Satins singer Fred Parris died at the age of 85, while Ronettes singer, Ronnie Spector (who was married to Phil Spector), also died.
Finally, Dixie Cups singer Rosa Lee Hawkins died at the age of 76 to complications from surgery.
Overall, it’s been a bad year so far for musicians… and January isn’t even over yet!
