Sweet Ascent

Sweet Ascent is playing on Memorial Day Monday. The hardcore/rock band is based out of Lawrence, Kansas, and they were recently featured in Alternative Press (AP) Magazine in March 2014.

They are currently on tour for their latest EP, Hopeless Dreamers, which was 'an inspiring collection of professionally-produced songs.'

Opening up for this show are four, count 'em, four local bands: Ampherium, The Usual Things, The Modern Era, and Downstairs Attic.

It must be duo Tuesday, as there is a double bill of Bad Bad Hats (duo Chris Hoge and Kerry Alexander) and twin sisters Brooke and Brit's Good Graeff (pronounced "grayf"). Plus bonus third wheel, husband/wife Daniel and Paige Ferraro's The Sudden Lovelys.

Here are some upcoming shows at the Mill City Nights. This venue originally was called The Brick, which opened up earlier this year to notorious bad press. They quickly changed their name to Mill City Nights to distant their associations to The Brick. Anyway, I went to a recent show there and I'm here to report that securities are still pretty awful - it's like airport security: they pat you down and kick you out of the line if you have what they deemed are liquids, weapons, or lens cameras.

I love Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power). I saw her about six or seven years ago for her "Greatest" tour, but she seemed to have disappeared since then.

Well Cat Power is back with a brand new studio album called SUN. Comparing and contrasting the new album to her 1998's Moon Pix, Marshall explained that the 1998 album was about "extreme isolation and survival in the crazy struggle", but SUN is the opposite, "confidently into your own future, to personal power and fulfillment."

It sounds like Marshall is no longer the shy, quiet girl and her piano, but more happier and optimistic with her current album. It should be interesting to see how she performs when you see her on tour.

Cat Power is stopping by Minneapolis at Mill City Nights on October 30th. Interestingly enough, the show is co-sponsored by the 400 Bar and The Current 89.3.

Here's a tour teamup that can't be beat: English Beat with The Paul Collins Beat tour! The tagteam ends at the Mill Cit Nights in Minneapolis, but the English Beat continues on their tour in Missouri.

A little information about each band, as you know The Beat was a ska band that started in 1978, but had to change their name in America as The English Beat because of Paul Collin's band The Beat (who pre-dated the English Beat by a year.) You can read about Paul Collin's band here on W♥M.

Anyway, it sounds like the two bands aren't rivals at all, but old friends, as Dave Wakeling, from the English Beat, explained, "Paul and I originally met back in '83 and have been in touch occasionally over the years, but recently we've been in closer FB [Facebook] contact, which led to this idea becoming a reality....Two beats, hearting as one!"

The tour kicks off October 11th. Dates with (*) indicates with support from The Paul Collins Beat.

Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, will be heading out on a five-week tour, co-headlining with Joshua Radin. The new tour is in support of her forthcoming album, PINES, which I've previously mentioned. The third A Fine Frenzy album hits store on October 16th via Virgin Records, according to Amazon.

It seems that PINES goes beyond just music, as in addition to the album, there's also a companion book and short film.

I wrote about The Beat last month and was surprise to find out that Paul Collins (the band's singer and songwriter) was very much active in the music industry. He's already released three albums, with Ribbons of Gold just last April 22^nd.

Part of my review also includes semi-heavy research on the band, and just searching around, I quickly realize what an icon Paul Collins have become over the years.

The Nerves - Hanging On The Telephone The Beat - Rock N Roll Girl

He started playing as drummer in a garage rock/power pop band called The Nerves, debuting with a self-titled EP in 1976. The lead song in the single, "Hanging On The Telephone" was their most famous song, being covered by such bands as Blondie and L7. Despite their success, the band broke up in 1977 and by then a new band called The Beat was formed with Collins as frontsman.

Since the name was already taken in Europe, the band was forced to change their name to Paul Collins' Beat. The band went on to release two albums on CBS Records, The Beat (1979) and The Kids Are The Same (1981), before being dropped by the label.

Although it looks like they continued on through a variety of record labels (noticeably on some UK labels), it seems the band ended in the late 80s.

Paul Collins resurfaced in 1992, with a self-titled release, then formed The Paul Collins Band the following year for From Town to Town, but it seems he's finally settled for Paul Collins Beat with the release of Ribbons of Gold.

If you are a fan of radio pop/rock song, this is the perfect album for you. Take for instance, the wonderfully crafted song "Hey DJ", with its catchy chorus (I say 'hey DJ' play that song for me, over and over), easy to follow beat, and it falls under three minutes. If the song sounds very 80s rock, that's because this is one of those lost Beat demo, probably re-tuned slightly for this album.

Another very 80s sounding song is "She Doesn't Want To Hang Around With You", a great power pop about breaking the news to some poor guy that his girlfriend doesn't want him anymore. This is in contrast to another great pop song, "Falling In Love With Her", which has a theme similar to The Beat's "Rock 'n Roll Girl" (spotting an attractive girl in a large group of people).

It sounds to me, that judging from the Beat and Nerves songs that I've heard, that Collins knows how to continuely write great songs. You can take any song on the album, from the Americana "Ribbon of Gold" to the love song "Without You" to the blatantly obvious "Big Pop Song" - and they will can play on the radio perfectly.

So, hey DJ, play that Paul Collins song for me.

Rock and Roll Girl

It's Saturday morning and I'm awake really early goofing around and making a new mix compilation CD for my car. I've decided to put on "Rock and Roll Girl" and since I haven't written a cover lover article in a while, I thought this is perfect.

 

 

The Muffs - Rock And Roll Girl

I came across this song via The Muffs, a fuzzy pop-punk band from the early 90s from Southern California. Although they have stated in interviews that they have not broken up, it's hard to ignore that they've been pretty much inactive since 2004.

Their singer, Kim Shattuck, has a snarly, but unique, voice, and I think she's really into obscure garage bands, as seen on their album Hamburger... However, I think the song that they're probably best known for is "Kids in America", a Kim Wilde cover (oh don't worry, we're going to have a "Kids in America" cover lover post eventually).

Trying to figure out some of the covers on Hamburger, I found The Beat, a band that debut with The Beat in 1979. The band was lead by Paul Collins, and eventually people started referring The Beat to Paul Collins' Beat - and it would make searching a lot easier, I suppose.

I actually don't have any other music from The Beat, other than this song for comparison, but they seem to be rock and rolly, probably based out of Los Angeles, as heard on their song "I wish there was an easier way, to meet all the girls in LA".

Between the two version, I would love to nod to The Muffs, just because it feels a little more updated and a little more punky. Plus, there's something sinister when you hear Shattuck sings "I wanna be with the rock n roll girl".

Both songs are now on my mix CD.
