Duo Overcoats (JJ Mitchell and Hana Elion) is back in the Twin Cities… this time headlining the Turf Club on May 2nd. The band is touring in support of Winner (Never Fall Back Records, distributed by Thirty Tigers).

Overcoats (22 May 2016)

We saw Overcoats’ first Minneapolis appearance in May 2016 and said, “Apparently the duo (Hana Elion & JJ Mitchell) only found out they were going on tour just days (May 18th) before their first gig last night in Chicago. They seemed really happy to be on tour, which you can hear from their voice whenever Hana or JJ would speak. The two harmonized throughout their brief 30-ish set, playing everything from their self-titled debut EP, and also throwing in a new single ‘Nighttime Hunger’ and a cover of Hozier’s ‘Cherry Wine’… Overcoats had a great sound, and based on the audience’s feedback, they certainly made some new fans on their first night playing in Minneapolis.”

Canadian band The New Pornographers is back on tour in support of Continue as a Guest (Merge Records). This is the group’s ninth album and first for Merge Records.

We caught the band in Nov 2014 and said, “After a brief intermission, the screen covering the main stage rose, and all eight members of New Pornographers took to the stage to rave applause, starting their set with the harmony laden title track from just-released album, Brill Bruisers (Matador Records); the song itself is homage to the classic Brill Building where so many great records were made.”

Rock legend Alice Cooper is currently on his “Too Close For Comfort” Tour. The tour will find its way to Sanford Center in Bemidji, MN on Saturday, May 6th. We looked it up, it’s about a two hours drive from where we’re at… so we won’t be attending this show. But if you’re willing to make the trip (or live in Bemidji), it’s a no-brainer to go see Cooper.

Alice Cooper (15 July 2018)

We last saw Alice Cooper with an all-star backup band in July 2018 and wrote, ““Anybody recognize this guitar?” four-time Grammy Award winning ex-guitarist for The Eagles, Don Felder asked, holding up his signature double neck before strumming the recognizable first chords of ‘Hotel California’’. Felder then introduced Alice Cooper, and he and the band dove straight into ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy’, accompanied by the legendary guitarist from The Doors, Robbie Krieger.”

Even though Cooper sings “No More Mr Nice Guy”, the reality is that we’ve met and talked to Cooper, and he’s really the nicest rock star you’ll ever meet! What a nice guy!

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer Dallas Green, aka City and Colour will be headlining First Avenue, in Minneapolis on May 6th, 2023. He is touring in support of his new album The Love Still Held Me Near (Still Records, an imprint of Dine Alone Records).

Courtney Marie Andrews will open the show. The last time we heard from her, she teamed up with Caitlin Rose to produce an album called Cazimi.

The idea around Fantasy is it’s meant to be experience live: “The idea was to come back with something closer to the energy of ‘Before The Dawn Heals Us’. The combination of guitars and synths is always in my music, but it’s maybe more present on this new record than on the previous ones.”

Florida’s Wage War (Briton Bond on lead vocals), Cody Quistad on rhythm guitar, Seth Blake on lead guitar, Chris Gaylord on bass and Stephen Kluesener on drums) will be headlining the Fillmore in Minneapolis on May 3rd, 2023. The band recently signed with Fearless Records.

I didn’t see who the opening band is on Live Nation’s website (they are terrible about listing opening bands), but I am told that nothing,nowhere will open. Their LP Void Eternal features Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, Underoath, Buddy Neilsen of Senses Fail, and many more!

11-time Juno Award winner Feist is doing a small tour in support of her sixth album Multitudes (Interscope Records). The record is said to be about life and death: with her sudden loss of her father and the birth of Feist’s daughter.

We saw Feist at Rock the Garden in 2018 and wrote, “Clearly the best thing about Rock the Garden was on Feist’s set. The Current’s Mark Wheat walked on to help sing “Century”.... which is “almost as long as it’s been since Feist played in the Twin Cities.” The Canadian singer was last seen at the Minnesota Zoo in 2012, and before that in 2007 at Pantages Theatre.”

Cold War Kids will be headlining First Avenue this January 24th. CWK recently learned that their song “First” was the decade’s most played Alternative track, right behind The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”. That’s very impressive, and even CWK’s Nathan Willett had to say, “This is insane! Thank you radio friends and fans. What an honor.”

Cold War Kids’ latest album, New Age Norms 1 is out now, and the band is on tour to promote the record. Opening up for them will be Overcoats. We first saw the two girls in May 2016 and have been following their career closely since.

The duo recently released their three-track single “The Fool” on double gatefold 7” from Loma Vista Recordings.

We caught Bailen in June 2019 and said, “There’s a certain homemade charm about them, as we discovered the first time we encountered the trio with Joseph in Sep 2017. Japanese-American singer/songwriter Mitski (Mitski Miyawaki) sold out her show at First Avenue’s mainroom on Friday, October 27th. This marked Mitski’s biggest stage to date.

Opening the show was New York duo Overcoats (Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell), touring in support of their debut album Young. This is the third time we’ve seen Overcoats, and it’s our favorite so far. In their first show with Matt Corby in May 2016 they were standard singer/songwriter folk singers. We saw them again with Tennis in Mar 2017 and they had transformed their show to a weird karaoke/art performance. With this current 2018 tour, the duo added a drummer called Sara G (?) to their live show.

As usual, Overcoats won over the audience with their sweet harmonies and dancing in unison. The crowd absolutely loved them, and Hana Elion had to mention several times that “Minneapolis is the literally best!”

Since their debut Young came out in 2017, it’s no secret that the group was working on their sophomore album. They decided to play two of those upcoming songs near the end of their set. Since the album is still pending, the song titles (just sample lyrics) are not obviously correct.

Mitski didn’t know how many times she’s played the Twin Cities, but she remembered playing the 7th Street Entry (next door) a few times (we saw her in Nov 2015, July 2016, and mentioned Triple Rock in July 2017), and had always wondered what it was like to be in the “big room” at First Avenue.

She really loved the historic First Avenue, again thanking the venue and staff for working so well with her band, “Some of the employees have worked here for 30 years...” which is older than her (she’s 28).

Mitski has always had a theatric side to her, but for this show, it’s all well-choreographed and served more like an art performance with music, rather than a standard pop/rock show. Each song had a custom video, with a particular dance movement. Her band is often in the background, sometime not even facing the crowd, but that’s exactly how they’re used for this tour. The spotlight is on Mitski at all times and she should be the center of focus.

Thanks to Mitski’s most raved album of 2018, Be The Cowboy (landing at #52 in the Billboard Top 200, #10 in Top Current Albums, #11 in Billboard Top Albums, #2 in Vinyl Albums), the current tour has sold out all across the country. That’s right, every show on this tour is sold out.

It wasn’t just watching Mitski that was fun, but part of the show is also just hearing and seeing her fans sing back to every song! You have to love the fact that Mitski started at the tiny 250-capacity show at the 7th Street to a 1,500+ capacity show at First Avenue, in such a short time.

Scottish band The Twilight Sad is playing the Turf Club in St Paul on October 25th. The band recently announced their fifth album It Won’t Be Like This All The Time to be out January 18, 2019 via Rock Action Records.

We’ve seen the intense band a few times, the last time the band played their biggest venue in the area, opening for The Cure in June 2016: “The group’s last appearance in town was in the 250-person capacity 7th Street Entry, and now they were opening in a hockey arena, though their large and fuzzy sound seemed a better fit than expected.”

The Stress of Her Regard to open. We saw the local band in Mar 2015 and said, “The trio (and sometime with extra guitar help from Davis) sang song from their 2015 debut self-titled EP, including "Class Warfare", a song that they dedicated to "people who buys apple $17,000 watches."” ... so if you see the singer with an Apple watch, give him a hard time.

The popular The Milk Carton Kids will be back in the Twin Cities this Friday, October 26th. The band recently released a new Amazon Original song called “Whisper In Her Ear”, which is a new recording as a full band re-imagined from the original 2013 release.

We haven’t seen the TMCK since May 2011: “ Joe Purdy came on stage to personally introduce The Milk Carton Kids, stating that he was "98% sure" that we were going to love them. Judging from the loud claps and the quiet, attentive audience, I would say 100% of the audience loved them.”

After a year of hiatus, husband and wife duo Tennis came back strong earlier in 2017. We caught the band in March 2017 and mentioned how singer Alaina Moore was pleased at the turnout and fan support.

Their latest release We Can Die Happy came out November 10th on Mutually Detrimental/Thirty Tigers.

Opening up for Tennis will once again be duo Overcoats (Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell). They’re constantly changing their live performance, from playing live instruments to weird Karaoke performance.

If you saw them in March, I would hazard a guess that they will do a similar setup: pre-recorded music over harmonizing vocals, dressed in angelic white clothing.

Overcoats’ debut album Young is out now on Arts & Crafts.

Aimee Mann (from ‘Till Tuesday) is back in the Twin Cities this Wednesday at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul to promote her new album Mental Illness (SuperEgo Records).

She’s brought with her our favorite Jonathan Coulton. We’ve been a fan of Joco since we heard his wonderful cover of Sir Mix A Lot’s ‘Baby Got Back’... which was so good that Glee stole his version (and offered no apologize, credit, or any payments).

We’ve seen Coulton before, and I can say that he has a very large, dedicated fanbase. They love him so much, and they know all of his songs by heart.

Coulton’s new album Solid State came out April 28th.

Laura Marling is back in town! We have love the singer/songwriter since she was 16, and we’ve been following her grow up as an artist all these years. Her sixth studio album Semper Femina came out March 10th.

We’ve seen her numerous times (over 10) and she’s always a delight. The last we saw her, we said, “45 min. with a Joni Mitchell-like set of poetry and folk. Marling remains notoriously shy - not saying much between songs, and probably comforted by the shade covering her face for the first half of her performance.”

Los Angeles four-piece Valley Queen will open the show. The band is led by singer/songwriter Natalie Carol and is said to sound like Fleetwood Mac and My Morning Jacket with vocals from Florence Welch. Their first-ever EP Destroyer came out earlier last month.

After over a year of hiatus, Denver’s Tennis is back in town at the Triple Rock Social Club last week, March 7th, in support of their fourth album Yours Conditionally.

Opening up the show was Overcoats, a duo featuring two singer/songwriters Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell. Since we last saw them in May 2016, the two has changed the way they play live. Gone are the live instruments and keys; the recent Triple Rock show only had the two singing and harmonizing over pre-recorded music/beats from their computer, while dressed in similar loose, white tops. They still sounded great, but we couldn’t help comparing their show to a Karaoke performance.

The band sounded like they were joking when they mentioned that they actually wrote down everything they have to say on their setlist, but they clearly weren’t (see photo)! They have trouble remembering what to say, so it made sense to write their next upcoming appearance on May 5th at the 7th Street Entry... which, as of this writing, has not been officially announced on the venue’s website. Unfortunately, they forgot to write down the web address to pre-order their debut album, Young (Arts and Crafts), so they fumbled through that the first time.

They ended their set with ‘Mother’, which had the two overdoing their dance movements and after the song ended, gasping for air, they said, “Forgive us, we don’t exercise!” With a loud laugh from the audience, they ended their performance on a funny note.

As previously mentioned, Tennis took a break from touring over a year ago, but their last appearance in Minneapolis was about three years ago, in 2014. At that time, we wrote that the husband/wife duo was feeling ill and had to cancel their in-store appearance, and adding “you can tell that the band is sorely looking forward to their break.”

Now, feeling fresh and with new songs from Yours Conditionally, the band seemed rather excited to be back on the road. Judging from the attendance and fan support, singer Alaina Moore seemed really happy that people hadn’t forgotten about them.

The title of the record and their song ‘Matrimony’, Moore would explain that it was in reference to their wedding day. They were sailing and ported in Baltimore and decided, for better or worst, that it was time have their wedding ceremony. With a quick self-haircut and her sister bringing them a last-minute vintage wedding dress (and no shoes!)... the “reluctant” wedding became their “best memory”.

As promised by Moore earlier in their set, the band did a good job playing “new songs, but with the hits as well.” Based on cheers, songs like ‘I'm Callin'’ and ‘It All Feels the Same’, those felt like they were the hits.

The encore started with just Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley playing ‘My Better Self’. The rest of the band joined them for ‘Bad Girls’, which Moore dedicated to International Womens Day (which was taking place the next day).

Tennis’ Yours Conditionally is out now on Mutually Detrimental Records.

03/04/2017 Philadelphia punk band The Menzingers is playing the Cabooze in support of their fifth album After the Party. Jeff Rosenstock and Rozwell Kid to open.

We got a preview of their new album when we saw them in August 2016 and noted, “The Menzingers played two new songs, "Lookers" and "Thick as Thieves" which will be on their upcoming release After the Party which is due out yet this year.”
