We love the viral buzz band Los Angeles, by the way of Chicago, OK Go. This band is known for their music videos, and every new one tries to out-do their previous video. It also helps that they write incredibly catchy and fun songs. With their last album released ten years ago (Hungry Ghosts), we are assuming the band has a new album or single in the works.

We previously saw OK Go in Apr 2015 and said, “The OK Go "variety show" also featured three Question and Answer sessions, with the audience asking the band questions... sometime to really personal effect, like "Are you bisexual?" (answer: "Not that I know of.") or "When did you lose your virginity?" (answer: "When I had sex.") The Q&A served as a nice break in the regular "party", and adds a unique moment on the rest of their other shows.”

Maryland’s The Dangerous Summer will be on tour in June, in support of their new album Gravity (which will be available June 21 on Rude Records). The trio (singer/bassist AJ Perdomo, guitarist Josh Withenshaw, and drummer Christian Zawacki) said they are excited to finally be back with their “Coming Back to Earth”-named tour.

We previously saw The Dangerous Summer in Aug 2013 and wrote, “The Dangerous Summer was the headliner. From what we can tell, they took their name from an Ernest Hemingway book (which was published after his death) and their music is best described as emo. They have a lot of fans, who knew all their lyrics, so you can tell right away that they write incredibly personal and relatable lyrics. As you can see from the blurry photo of the setlist, they did plenty of songs from their latest album Golden Record, including "Catholic Girls", "Miles Apart", "Honesty", and "Knives". The album just came out last week (August 6, 2013) on Hopeless Records, which you can order direct or pick it up in person at a live show.”

Australian funk and soul band Hiatus Kaiyote is returning to the USA, touring in support of Love Heart Cheat Code (due June 28th via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune).

We previously saw Hiatus Kaiyote in Oct 2015 and wrote, “Hiatus Kaiyote headlined the show. The Melbourne group features singer/guitarist Nai Palm, bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin, and drummer Perrin Moss. They've been together since 2010.”

OK Go: Interesting Drug

As you know, I’m a big Morrissey fan... so when I heard that OK Go was covering his song in a music video and also performing it live on The Late Late Show With James Corden (January 18th on youtube.com), I had to check it out.

First of all, OK Go’s version is a little slowed down, which is an interesting choice. All the lyrics were deliberately slowed to give the listener a chance to fully understand what was being said.

Obviously, OK Go’s version is set to America’s political landscape, even changing one of the line to read “on a Russian scheme, designed to kill your dream”.... but oddly leaving in the British spelling and pronunciation of “mum” instead of the American “mom.”

Overall, I think it is a good choice in a cover song. And a big plus to them for choosing to sing it on James Corden instead of one of their own songs.

OK Go’s lead singer Damian Kulash explained his choice in cover: “I was listening to Morrissey around the time of the conventions last year and when he belted 'There are some bad people on the rise' - that fabulous opening line of Interesting Drug - I felt like he'd written it about the very moment we were living through. Now, with this bewildering, surreal inauguration looming, it seems like a good time to share those poignant lines again.”

OK Go will be doing a special Q&A along with screenings at The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, February 2.

What a fun show! I've never seen so much confetti in my life! It is exactly what Chicago's OK Go promised us: "Fun, entertaining, electric and full of confetti."

Show opener White Arrow cancelled all their remaining tour dates last week, which was a little unexpected because I was really looking forward to seeing the band again. This caused OK Go to start their show earlier than normal.

The OK Go show on Thursday, April 2nd, was part of the 45th Anniversary of First Avenue, so there was definitely a testimonial moment from singer Damian Kulash who confessed that his first album that changed his life was Prince's Purple Rain and how proud and happy he was to be on the same stage that the film was shot on. He also noted that the first 7" that "ruined my life" was Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", which you can clearly hear its influence, note per note, on their "Fake It" video montage that was shown as part of their encore. I understand that music videos made the band famous, but I also wasn't exactly thrilled to watch about four videos (even if they were playing the music life behind the screen). I felt like I was there to see a live performance, not watching music videos... although the fans in the audience didn't mind it.

Confetti-rama

Some people might think the constant confetti was a distraction from the music, but I didn't mind it. It was a lot of fun for me, and OK Go knew exactly what they were doing with the confetti, timing it with high moments in their songs.

One question about the craziest dream had guitarist Tim Nordwind tell the longest, craziest dream about how he was an artist living in Japan and got invited to a Sumo wrestling show... only to be a scheme about genetically enhanced ferret racing. But that's not even 35% of the story! There's lots more, but for the sake of brevity, I'm just going to move on.

OK Go's lengthy setlist

For the "nerdiest part of the show", Damian asked the audience to make various sounds, so he can record them on his iPhone to play back and mix it into the next song. Four sounds were needed: foot stomp, clap, hi hat, and open hi hat. With that setup, they were able to mix those sound effects as a weird improv version of "There's a Fire".

The encore was the best part of the show, after the music video "Fake It" was shown, the band came on stage to lip-sync to "A Million Ways". This had the whole band doing a choreograph dance sequence. Lots of fun, and plenty of phones going up to snap some photos.

The song finale was their first viral hit, "Here It Goes Again", which they invited fans in the front to come on stage to dance... for a very satisfying ending.

Richmond's Matthew E. White is back on tour, in support of Fresh Blood, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut Big Inner. Produced by White and Spacebomb partner Trey Pollard and mixed by Pat Dillett (David Byrne, Nile Rodgers), Fresh Blood is now streaming in its entirety via NPR.

We saw White a few years ago and I thought he had a solid set, including a nice cover of Neil Young's "Are You Ready for the Country".

Brooklyn's Wilsen (by the way of London) will be opening up the show. Look for her Magnolia Remix EP out on April 14, 2015... featuring Wye Oak's remix of "Sea to Sea" and Sun Glitters' remix of "Magnolia".

British duo The Ting Tings (Katie White & Jules De Martino) will be back in Minneapolis this April 3rd, 2015 at the Fine Line Music Café, in support of their third studio album Super Critical (Finca Records/[PIAS]). The latest album was co-produced by Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, and was not entirely loved by the 'super critics'. I don't understand the reviews, I listened to the singles off Super Critical, they are really catchy and fun little songs. I think they're just meant to be funky disco songs, and I love it. Expect the Ting Tings to play Super Critical on this tour, but obviously throwing in their hit UK singles "That's Not My Name", "Hands", and "Hang It Up".

Vol 3 Kaneholler

Special guest on this tour is Kaneholler, an electric-soul duo (Chelsea Tyler and Jon Foster) from Venice Beach, California (by the way of Brooklyn, New York). For the live tour, Tyler's brother, Taj will also be joining the group as part of their road crew.

The band recently released their Vol 3, their third EP, and currently in Austin, Texas (as well as The Ting Tings) for SXSW.

Trivia: Chelsea and Taj Tyler are son and daughter of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

Man Man, the alt-experimentalists from Philadelphia are back on the road after a stint with Gogol Bordello, in support of their latest, last year’s On Oni Pond (ANTI- Records).

The phrase “expect the unexpected” is probably never more true, with leader Honus Honus, percussionist Pow Pow, and band serving up something memorable.

Arrive early, as NYC art rock band Landlady with Adam Schatz who plays in Man Man, opens the show promoting Upright Behavior (Hometapes 070).

After breaking through to radio with single “Me and My Broken Heart” and stints opening for Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, the band’s Interscope Records EP is setting the stage for an upcoming full-length.

How crazy are U.S. teens eager to see the band? – a recent NYC pop-up gig required police intervention to control the swelling crowds.

The Minneapolis show is in the south metro, at all-ages The Garage in Burnsville, with the lads scheduled to do a 2pm meet-and -greet earlier that day, at the FYE in Burnsville Center.

Six-time Grammy-winning musician, artist and activist Ziggy Marley returns to the touring stage promoting Fly Rasta, on his own Tuff Gong Worldwide label.  The new album blends his own reggae with rock, funk, soul and psychedelica, even adding sitar, tabla and taiko drums to his musical mix.

Local artist Young Ry, who once toured with Cyndi Lauper as member of The Rule, opens the evening under the stars at the Zoo in suburban Apple Valley.
