Popular Los Angeles band Awolnation will headline the Fillmore in Minneapolis on Columbus Day, October 10th. The band’s latest cover lover album came out in May 2022, titled My Echo, My Shadow, My Covers, and Me.

The Mysterines (09 May 2022)

Also UK’s The Mysterines is on the bill. We caught the band on their first headline US tour in May 2022 and wrote, “British alternative rock band The Mysterines took the stage, playing their entire debut Reeling (Fiction Records). Just to give you a little background, the group is barely out of their teens when they were selected as one of Amazon Music UK’s Ones To Watch 2022. They previously supported Royal Blood, The Amazons and Sea Girls, as well as headlined the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds.”

Athens’ indie-pop legends of Montreal is on tour for their new album Freewave Lucifer fck (Polyvinyl Record Co).

Kevin Barnes describes the new release as, “Paranoia/isolation/self-terror/terror-self, the failure spectacle, the take down, sex as a means of identity denial, the kaleidoscopic world of regret and shame, the liberation of mockery, adolescent nightmares reborn and reimagined, torture echolocation with non-eventual silence”.

We’ve previously described the band as one of the most creative and inventive live band. They are a must-see band: “What can I say for of Montreal? They are one of the best live band, thanks to their theatrical efforts. In addition to the musicians, they also employed three 'dancers' who appear periodically in various costumes on stage. From flag boxers to scary ghosts to "eyeball" monster... it's a lot of fun to watch.”

After a long five year wait, the Toronto quintet Alvvays is back, touring in support of their new album Blue Rev (Polyvinyl).

We last saw the band at First Avenue in Nov 2017 and wrote, “We’ve “always” liked Alvvays, going back to Nov 2014, when we discussed how great their single, “Archie, Marry Me”… which the band made sure they play near the end of their First Avenue set.”

Austin five-piece The Deer is currently on tour in support of their new album The Beautiful Undead, available now on Keeled Scales.

Val Son to open. We saw the band in July 2016 and said, “Starting of the night was Val Son (Michael Gunvalson, Eric Carlson, Emily Mohrbacher, and Jack Ventimiglia). Their set was very relaxing and enjoyable, songs like ‘On The Range’ and ‘Out of Nowhere’ were very good. Their sound is awesome, especially when their voices come together. It is like candy leaving you, you just want more. I look forward to seeing them live again. My personal favorite was listening to ‘Beautiful Child’, which I thought was the best of the set. They have their single out on iTunes called ‘Sundays’.”

September has been more like “Rocktember” with a busy month of shows so far, but Rocktober next month looks busy as well, so use those concert dollars wisely.

The pandemic lockdown still has ripple effects, from re-scheduled and postponed shows to artists taking time off for their mental health well-being. Rising star KennyHoopla was one of those, supposed to play The Truman this week but writing, "I need to take this time to focus on myself and my mental health. I will be back soon - a stronger human and artists for myself and all of you. Once again, I apologize.”  We wish him the best.

Monday Sept 19

Warren Wolf, Sept. 19-20, Lied Center. $19-$35

Warren Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist /vibraphonist from Baltimore, MD. After graduating from Baltimore School for the Arts, he went to study at the Berklee College of Music.

He’s performed or recorded with some of the world’s best musicians, including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter and many others and most recent release is with Christian McBride, 2021’s Live at the Village Vanguard.

Foxy Shazam, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $25-$30

Cincy alt-glam rockers released new full-length The Heart Behead You in Feb and also a remaster of their debut album this summer and are out on their Hidden Treasure Tour.

Pavement, Uptown. $49.50-$125

Pavement first teased this reunion back in June 2019, announcing they would reunite starting with Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival in 2020. Those shows were eventually postponed because of the pandemic, but the reunion tour is now in full swing. Pavement broke up in 1999 and reunited for the first time in 2010. ‘We are just going to play these songs together, we like each other, and so this will be familiar”, leader Stephen Malkmus has said.

Electro-pop/sound collage openers Annalibera are led by Anna Gebhardt who emerged from a classical music background in 2015 and latest album Moon Bath, was made in collaboration with producer Philip Rabalais.

Kiss the Tiger, Bottleneck- Lawrence, FREE

We’re fans of the Minneapolis indie alt-rock band whose third studio release, Vicious Kid, is out now. The band began in late 2016 and has been gradually gaining more attention ever since, named a “Picked to Click” band by former alt-weekly City Pages in 2019. We just caught them here in February, so are glad to see they are returning and with a free show. KC funksters Supermoto to open.

Melvins, recordBar, $25

Washington state sludgy alt-rock pioneers are back with new six-track album, Bad Moon Rising, described as “big riffs and scary vocals” with an exclusive orange vinyl only available at their shows. They also recently covered Soundgarden’s “Spoonman” with that band's drummer Matt Cameron, on vocals. We Are the Asteroid to open.

Wednesday Sept 21

Built to Spill, Granada- Lawrence. $29.50

The Boise ID indie rock band has now been around an amazing thirty years, and has a new album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name, out now on SubPop, their first of new material since 2015.

Madison Cunningham w Bendigo Fletcher, recordBar, $20

The singer-songwriter and two-time Grammy nominee returns in support of her new album Revealer, released last week on Verve Forecast. She works again on the new record with Mike Elizondo (Twenty One Pilots, Gary Clark Jr.) as well as longtime producer and collaborator Tyler Chester and Tucker Martine (Neko Case, Sufjan Stevens). The comparisons to a young Joni Mitchell persist, and we’ve caught her live, opening in 2018 and headlining just last year.

Of Montreal, Granada Theater-Lawrence, $22

The Athens GA alt indie-pop band has been busy during the lockdown, releasing I Feel Safe with You, Trash last year, and now their eighteenth studio album, Freewave Lucifer F<ck F^ck F>ck was released in late June. We caught them live several times last decade, the most recent being five years ago, and any band ending their set with a song titled, “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse “is going to be an interesting one. Locate S, 1 and Surf Wax to open.

One of today’s premiere stand-up comics has come a long way from his beginnings performing at a Las Vegas coffee house. The Filipino-American continues to gain fans with his astute observations of his mother, son, growing up, and everyday life. Koy released an autobiography (Mixed Plate: Chronicles of an All-American Combo) last year, and comedy film, Easter Sunday via Steven Spielberg and Amblin Pictures/Universal earlier this year.

His fourth successful Netflix special, Live at the LA Forum, just started streaming and this Independence, MO show, is a relatively small venue, so catch him here, a little more close-up, than elsewhere. The comedian is on his Funny is Funny World Tour.

Nabil Ayers, Lawrence Public Library, reading/signing - Free

The drummer, entrepreneur, record executive, and essayist discusses his memoir, My Life in the Sunshine: Searching for my Father and Discovering My Family. His mother and former ballerina would have a son with acclaimed jazz musician Roy Ayers, fully expecting and agreeing to his absenteeism. Ayers recounts a life spent living with the aftermath of that decision, and his journey to build an identity of his own, despite his father’s absence.

Co-sponsored by KU's School of Music and Departments of American Studies and African and African American Studies. The Raven Book Store will have copies of the book for sale.

The Gaslight Anthem with Tigers Jaw, The Midland. $39.50

The New Jersey folk punk band announced their return to the road with their first headline tour in four years. “I am very pleased to announce to you all that The Gaslight Anthem is returning to full time status as a band,” said front man Brian Fallon. “We’re also beginning to write new songs for what will be our sixth LP. Live, they recently been covering some Seattle sounds with Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam covers, as well as could sneak in a Nick Cave song. Most recently, we caught leader Brian Fallon and his band live at a 2018 Minneapolis show.

Jake Shimabukuro, Lied Center. $14-$30

The acclaimed Hawaii-born ukulele player can play any genre of music on his small instrument - jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk or even classical and added to his twenty-year career with last year’s Jake & Friends album release, collaborating with Willie Nelson, Bette Midler, Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Loggins, and others. In 2021, he was also nominated by President Biden to serve as a member of the National Council on the Arts.

Billed as a hilarious journey through motherhood with internet sensations Tiffany Jenkins, Meredith Masony and Dena Blizzard. Two-time GRAMMY-nominated blues-rock sensation Joe Bonamassa will be playing a two-night residency at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. Often hailed as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation, he almost single-handledly redefined the blues-rock genre.

Bonamassa’s new project (and backing live band) will be called The Sleep Eazys, featuring Bonamassa on lead guitars with Late Night with David Letterman’s Anton Fig (percussion), Musician’s Hall of Famer Michael Rhodes (bass), Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Reese Wynans (keyboards), Lee Thornburg (trumpet), Paulie Cerra (saxophone), along with Jade MacRae and Juanita Tippins on background vocals.

Protest singer Billy Bragg is having a three-night residency at the Fine Line Music Café from April 18 to 20. I know one of these shows have already sold out… so get your tickets now if you want to see Billy Bragg.

We last saw Bragg in October 2016 and said, “Billy & Joe decided to delay their show later than scheduled, because due to the over sold out status, people were still lining up to get in the venue. Before and after every song they played, they had great stories about them. After the Jimmie Rodgers cover ‘Waiting for a Train’, Bragg jokingly said that he was “the first Englishman to yodel since Morrissey.” (Referring to The Smiths’ ‘The Boy With the Thorn in His Side’). The respectful audience was extremely quiet, except during these humorous stories.”

There will not be any opening band, because Bragg has been around for ages (35 years!) and can easily play a three-hour set. Having said that each night will feature a different set list.

It’s time once again! The 21st annual AthFest Music & Arts Festival is coming up Friday June 23 – Sunday June 25, 2017 in Athens, GA. AthFest features music from local, regional and national acts on 3 outdoor stages, as well as in a plethora of air-conditioned Athens venues on the AthFest Club Crawl Friday and Saturday nights.

Futurebirds (Indie Americana, Athens), Zoogma (EDM, Nashville) and Drivin’ N Cryin’ (rock, Atlanta) headline the main stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Club Crawl features of Montreal, Muuy Biien, Cindy Wilson (of the B-52’s) and Lazer/Wulf, among many others.

The full schedule is on athfest.com and the Walkabout app will help festival-goers find and plan the shows they want to see.

AthFest is a well-oiled machine, and they run a tight ship. The 19^th annual installment of this festival- which ran from Friday June 26 through Sunday June 28, 2015 in Athens, GA- was no exception. I was impressed at how the bookers, organizers and- most of all- the stage crews were able to stagger the bands just so; there was no overlap between any bands on the outdoor stages and therefore no cacophony. None of the Club Crawl bands started playing until after the last outdoor acts for each evening had ended their sets, so we festivalgoers at AthFest 2015 were able to take in music well into the night.

I think it was because of this tight schedule that Kevin Barnes did not have time for wardrobe changes during his set with Of Montreal on Saturday, June 27. He chose to wear a simple turquoise poncho with multicolored stripes that came together in a ‘V’ shape, a floppy hat, a large, blocky pair of sunglasses and a simple pair of white shorts one might wear when going for a jog. These items he kept on for the entire set.

The singer seemed unfazed as angels drifted onto the stage and spread their gigantic wings, as people holding white circular discs held them up to reveal projected images, even as two bunny rabbits had a boxing match right beside him, after which they peeled off both their gloves and their jumpsuits to reveal large, bobbing fake breasts. It was amazing. And what a beautiful voice that man has. I can remember when Kevin Barnes was a fledgling musician in mid 1990s Athens, and now it’s hard to imagine a time before the birth of his psychedelic indie pop juggernaut Of Montreal.

Roughly 15 years after I last saw Of Montreal play, they kicked off their AthFest 2015 show with a man in a gorilla mask coming onto the stage and addressing us with the spoken intro to Prince’s Let’s Go Crazy. Then another man in a red leotard, face mask and cape came up to ask the crowd if we’d ever considered what it means to live in Athens- a bubble of liberal thinking surrounded by the conservative towns and counties of the deep south. Then came his dire warning:  that our anomaly of a town is no accident. That we’re here in this bubble being watched. That living in Athens is like being on The Truman Show. It’s all staged and none of it is real. A twinkling toy drone flying overhead seemed to validate this paranoid theory. Then Of Montreal took the stage and the magic happened.

In addition to our Of Montreal experience, my friend and photographer Cary Whitley and I saw some amazing bands at AthFest 2015. All of the excellent photos from this weekend were taken by him.

On Friday June 26 we convened at the KidsFest stage to see a band featured in the Up Next Showcase, which spotlights the best of Athens’ teenage up-and-comers. The band was Zenith Blue (formerly known as Feedback), a tight band of teenage male musicians fronted by Katie Bortle- a charismatic female singer with a lot of heart, which she pours liberally into her powerful vocal delivery. I have a strong feeling that this band will thrive and grow to join the pantheon of Athens greats.

Later that night at Little Kings Shuffle Club, Athens’ own Tunabunny brought to mind the Riot Grrrl spirit as Mary Jane Hassell and Brigette Adair Herron traded off on lead vocals, both while playing a mean guitar. The band describes itself as “transcendental dance pop,” and they indeed brought out in this crowd a state of transcendent joy.

In the wee hours I went to Flicker Bar to catch some post-punk psychedelic noise pop as played by Athens music veterans Grape Soda. Normally a two-piece consisting of brothers Ryan and Mat (with one ‘t’) Lewis, for this show they added two new members including Bill Fortenberry on bass and Ryan Vogel on Moog keyboard and arpeggiator. Ryan plays the drums- with gusto- and Mat deftly handles lead vocals and Farfisa keyboard.

On Saturday July 27, I went to the 40 Watt Club to see Athens’ much lauded punk pop powerhouse, the female-fronted Monsoon. They did not disappoint. Sienna Chandler moves about the stage while singing and playing her guitar with the fierce energy of an actual monsoon; so the name fits.

On Sunday June 28, I saw the final performance of the festival, a straight-ahead rock band known as The Baseball Project. The band features R.E.M.’s Mike Mills on guitar, and all their songs are about baseball. The highlight of the evening was when R.E.M.’s former drummer Bill Berry came onstage with a tamborine and joined Mike Mills on vocals for the R.E.M. classic, Don’t Go Back to Rockville.

Surfer Blood dominated the Georgia Theatre

I have saved what- in my opinion- is the best performance of the festival for last. I am speaking- of course- of Surfer Blood. On Saturday June 27, Surfer Blood dominated the Georgia Theatre and everyone lucky enough to be inside. It was like the second coming of The Beach Boys, with a Weezer-style twist. John Paul Pitts’ enchanting croon took me completely by surprise and transported me to the time I saw Brian Wilson perform Pet Sounds at Chastain Park in Atlanta. Then I remembered the first time I saw Weezer, when The Sweater Song was their first and only single. Taking in my first taste of Surfer Blood, I felt as if I was seeing indie rock history being made all over again, and I was honored to bear witness to such a gift. I am grateful to everyone who encouraged me to see this alternative indie rock band from West Palm Beach, Florida. They are masters of catchy guitar hooks and choruses that you can’t stop singing, much less forget.

Of Montreal and Deerhoof are currently touring together under one bill, heading towards SXSW 2015 in Austin, Texas. They recently stopped by First Avenue in Minneapolis on Sunday, March 15th. I've seen both bands live before and already knew to expect an unbelievable show.... and, of course, both bands delivered.

Deerhoof

Based on the longer than usual opening set (55 minutes), this was a co-headliner tour, with Deerhoof first on stage. If you've never heard of Deerhoof, they are a San Francisco band with a wide mixture of sound, from art-punk to pure pop to avant-garde to minimalistic to noise.... their music sounds just as strange as the band, currently fronted by Japanese singer/guitarist Satomi Matsuzaki.

The 21-year-old band is currently touring in support of their 12th studio album La Isla Bonita, whose title may indicate their pop influence of Madonna. When asked about the pop sound in the new album, drummer Greg Saunier said it was because they were trying to "sound like Joan Jett or Janet Jackson".

Of course, you have to take what Saunier say with a grain of salt, because mid-way during Deerhoof's set, Saunier took over the mic and started talking about really random topics. For example, he was sure to remember to not forget the water - hearing some fans in Boston (who was also in the audience on Sunday). The other item was that he needed to tie his shoe laces. The one relevant thing the drummer said was that guitarist John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez used to live in Minneapolis, which got big cheers of approval from the audience.

The band sounded great, although sometime I had a hard time telling if Deerhoof's songs were English or Japanese songs as Matsuzaki has a strong accent. Otherwise, this was a typical Deerhoof show, with plenty of dancing and sometime the odd improvisation on drummer Saunier's part.

If you've never seen Georgia's of Montreal live, you need to do yourself a favor and check them out. Their music is psychedelic pop (think psychedelic-era Beatles), but the best part of their show is that they have dedicated dancers/performers who are often in costumes, in tune with a light/projection show. Some people say it's a distraction from the music, but who cares, I think it is such a fun show.

As usual their show often begins with an announcer/hypeman who would introduce singer Kevin Barnes. Barnes came on stage dressed as a woman, complete with makeup and women's shoes. As the show goes on, we experienced two or three Barnes costume changes, with basically 80% naked by the encore.

"It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"

It is a typical of Montreal show, except for one key difference on this tour vs the other times I've seen them: Barnes left the stage to have two of the dancer girls come on stage to sing a Kitty Wells cover song, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels". The country/western tune, I felt was a nice break than the usual singalong pop songs from Barnes.

Highlight of the show was their final song, "Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse". The dancers came on stage to blow feathers into the audience. The audience loved it by their chaotic roar and it was really a great way to end the show.

Although many fans in the audience have seen the band live on numerous occasions, I did talked to an "of Montreal virgin" after the show and he told me that there were things on stage that he's never ever seen, referencing the Abe Lincoln boxing with the topless poodles (an image that cannot be forgotten any time soon). As weird as that sound, he's definitely going to see of Montreal again when they come back to town.

Again, this is an excellent team-up. If you like one of the band, chances are you'll like them both. of Montreal's Aureate Gloom and Deerhoof's La Isla Bonita are both out now on Polyvinyl Records.

One of my favorite bands, The Colourist (who I randomly caught at a live show with Youngblood Hawke in 2013 and they blew me away with their really catchy pop songs), will be back in Minneapolis... this time supporting Echosmith. This isn't new information, as we broke the story in December 2014.

Echosmith is touring in support of Talking Dreams, which came out last year on Warner Bros. The Colourist has a 2014 self-titled debut album that came out in March 2014 via Republic.

We caught Nashville duo Neulore (Adam Agin and William T. Cook) last September 2014, but it would seem like the band is back in town, this time headlining the 7th Street Entry.

Opening up for the show will be Benjamin Cartel, who you may remember as the Cartel part in his band KaiserCartel. Lara wrote about KaiserCartel's show in 2009, "If this were an episode of Sesame Street, I would say “Tonight’s concert is brought to you by the letter ‘A’ for ADORABLE.” "

This is an unbelievable lineup. These two bands are two of my favorite live bands, and seeing them together on one bill is sort of amazing. My only problem is that these two bands will try and outdo each other... and that's a big win for their fans.
