Tristan McNeil, aka Nude With Lyre, an ambient/drone outfit from Athens, GA- will release his debut album Blood on December 9th. According to McNeil, this album is inspired by the “crude surfaces of things” amidst the stillness and monotony of growing up in a small southern town.

The track “Purple” unfurls languidly in a desolate landscape of intermittent submarine-like pings, claps and sounds like drops of water, with occasional hints at noises that resemble toppling pieces of sheet metal striking a concrete floor in the distance- albeit muffled, to maintain the song’s soothing feel- as well as muted male vocals. A final, definitive clap signals as abrupt an end to this song as the beginning is slow.

For some writers, such as myself, listening to music while attempting to write can serve as an unwelcome distraction. However, “Purple” provided a pleasant yet unobtrusive soundtrack as I worked on this article. This serves for me as proof that this song captures the essence of what ambient master Brian Eno describes as the ideal for ambient music: that it be as “ignorable as it is interesting.” This is no small task, but Nude With Lyre makes accomplishing that task look easy.
