JENNY O.
jennyo.com
Not to be confused with "Young Jenny Owen", I mentioned young Jenny O. last Christmas. I said that she had an EP called Home coming out November 30th, via Manimal Records (love the name from that terrible television show).
Er, maybe I'm wrong, but an update tells me that EP is finally available on vinyl and CD last Tuesday, July 19th. Song I have been given is "Well OK Honey".
In other Jenny O. news, she recently contributed a Buddy Holly cover song called "I'm Gonna Love You Too" on the 19-track compilation Rave on Buddy Holly.
GABBY YOUNG & OTHER ANIMALS
gabbyyoungandotheranimals.com
Speaking of 'young', Gabby Young & Other Animals are on tour in the US, in support of their debut album, We're All In This Together. This UK band is described as a "sort of jazzy gypsy circus". Based on their promo picture, it's kind scary and fun. Apparently, the band play a crazy amount of instruments (guitars, banjo, accordion, trombone, tuba, clarinet, percussion, steel drums, djembe, piano, Hammond organ), it would be interesting to see how (and if) they bring their instruments along.
You can check out the free song, "We're All in This Together", at fourquartersent.com. Below are the tour dates I've been given, more will be announced shortly.
Trivia: The thing about Gabby Young is that she is a trained opera singer.
NUCULAR AMINALS
myspace.com/nucularaminals
I personally love K Records (is kpunk.com new?), so I'm always really supportive of their bands. One of their bands, Nucular Aminals (note terrible spelling), is currently on tour for their self-titled album, released last month. They have a new 7" coming out in September. The single could be called Nobody's Man, since that's the first track. I'm streaming it via soundcloud - that song does not appear on their debut album.
Tour dates below:
STRONG KILLINGS
facebook.com/strongkillings
Strong Killings is from Seattle, Washington... where it rains a lot. I wish it would rain here. The band's debut self-titled album is out now (released July 19th) on that Journey-lovin' record label Don't Stop Believin' Records.
The free song they've given out is "Annals Of Animals", which I'll use Soundcloud here.
From reading their press quotes, they all say Strong Killings is very punk and very loud.
From their warning: "if you're too cool, well then, f*** you", I would also add in very young. That's cool, I've always said, have fun in what you do. And if people don't like it, who cares, at least you're having fun.
THE BLACK GHOSTS
facebook.com/TheBlackGhosts
The Black Ghosts is a UK-based electro duo, consisting of Theo Keating and Simon William Lord.
Their third album is called When Animals Stare, and it will be out on Southern Fried Records on August 1st, 2011.
The idea for the album artwork came from Lord, who was collecting animal glass eyes and when they lined up in a grid, he thought it looked like a great album sleeve. The next step was for them to paint 25 eyes to create a massive 10ft piece of artwork for the cover.
So there you have it. Keep your eyes out for the album this Autumn.
