Ramona Gonzalez, aka Nite Jewel, is back with her critically acclaimed avant-electronic pop album No Sun.

The new album came out of Gonzalez trying to answer what it meant to a woman in mourning… and the album is described as “electronic dance music for an era of death, mourning, but also a fervent celebration of life.”

We’ve been writing about her since Mar 2012, writing, “Nite Jewel's album One Second of Love came out earlier this month. The lead single and video for "One Second of Love" looks like a scene from some 70s Satan movie. The video is creepy and scary, and had a bit of humor (if you stay until the end for the censored flash).”

Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets recently announced their fifth studio album Night Gnomes via Marathon Artists / What Reality? Records.

The new album was written in Western Australia during yet another year of lockdowns. Songwriter Jack McEwan compares the band to the transformation of Radiohead, adding: “Night Gnomes is a bit darker than the other four releases. I don’t know if that’s the bi-product of being locked inside Western Australia for the past two years but it’s definitely given us a lot of time to think. I reckon this record has a bit more of a KID A/Amnesiac vibe to it, it’s a bit weirder, a little left of the ‘psych/pop’ world we’ve been tagged under. I kinda like that though, forever expanding, variety is the spice of life! It starts moody, talks of break ups and new relationships; gets kinda chirpy in the middle and then ends really beautifully, a bit like Jurassic Park 3...”

We saw the Australian band in Sep 2019 and wrote, “Perth, Australia’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets closed out the show. If you’re a fan of Tame Impala and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard , you’ll really like PPC. The band playfully started their set with the unique guitar riffs from Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”, before kicking into “Surf's Up”.”

Of course, there will be a tour to promote Night Gnomes in 2022. See you guys in Rocktober!

Platinum-selling group Lanco (stylized as LANCO) is currently touring in support of their groundbreaking album Hallelujah Nights. The album hit the top of the Billboard Country Albums chart upon release, making them the first Country group to earn a No. 1 debut in over a decade.

Previously, the band stopped by Minneapolis in Jan 2019, which we wrote: “There’s a two night-residency for Country music band Lanco at the Varsity Theater on Saturday (1/12) and Sunday (1/13). Ska/punk trio Sublime dominated the radio airways in 1997 with such hits as ‘What I Got’ and ‘Santeria’ from their third self-titled album... They were the hottest band on the planet, but bittersweet as their singer/guitarist Bradley Nowell had died two months earlier to heroin overdose.

The surviving band members reformed the band with new singer (and Sublime fan) Rome Ramirez in 2009. They’re called Sublime With Rome in the U.S. for legal reasons (but they’re known as Sublime to the rest of the world). Expect to hear songs from Sublime With Rome’s albums (Yours Truly and Sirens), as well as the hits from the Sublime 1996 album, at the upcoming First Avenue show on Wednesday. This is a rare opportunity to see the trio on a non-festival circuit or large arena.

Less Than Jake to open. The band was previously in town in February 2017.

In The Valley Below (husband & wife duo Angela Gail and Jeffrey Jacob) will be at the Turf Club in St Paul this Wednesday, in support of their new EP Elephant, which came out earlier this week (July 14th). The record was the follow-up to 2014’s The Belt, and was recorded in the basement studio of their new home in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Flagship to open. We previously saw this Charlotte band in October 2015 and wrote, “Flagship had a lonely highway fringed with darkness sound enhanced by Daniel Lanois/Brian Eno type atmospherics in promotion of their eponymous debut full-length. The band connected with many in the audience, even playing the requested 'I Want You' even though singer Drake Margolnick confessed the band was tired, having just come from Charlotte and an ex-member's wedding, the day before.”

We previously caught Guided By Voices’ guitarist Tobin Sprout in Athens, Georgia on May 19, 2017, which we wrote, “The rooftop of the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA was packed to the gills on May 19th to partake in Tobin Sprout’s laid back performance and Elf Power’s rowdy one. A friend of mine even drove from Indiana to see the show. It was a regular townie reunion.”

Now Sprout is on his way to Minneapolis to play his new The Universe And Me (Burger Records)... plus some surprisingly GBV songs.

Elephant Six artists Elf Power will open, but we feel this is more of a co-headliner situation, as both bands could easily headline the 7th Street Entry stage. Elf Power’s Twitching in Time is out now on Orange Twin.

I previously mentioned Toronto's Austra, that Tasseomancy are part of Austra's touring band. I got a note that their new video for 2012 is for their song "Spellwork" (see it on youtube). The video is creepy with a mix of witchcraft and lots of smoke in the forest. It reminds me of The Wicker Man (the original, not the Nicholas Cage remake).

I couldn't figure out what this video for Emily Lacy's "Rise" is about. It starts off with a fire. Then a woman (I am assuming it is Lacy) in a tablecloth dress (?), her face covered with white paint. Then … is that the US Embassy? Yep, weird.

According to Lacy, the free EP (available on emilylacy.bandcamp.com) was inspired by the Occupy movement.

The Occupy protests really grabbed my attention and had an intense effect on my daily life. I was challenged by both the ideas and the physical logistics involved in the protests; how they took form and were dismantled, and what it meant to see all that firsthand. I got into the idea of witnessing, of bearing witness to conflict and confrontation. I started to see that ideas are really dangerous, that they can force us to imagine things differently, and I think the reason the major camps were stamped out is because they were too effective in bringing the heat, the fire, the pressure for things to actually change. The protest encampments were like a flame that would not go out. It was vital for me to just record the intensity of what I was witnessing.
