This is really the ultimate playlist, as Substance were singles compilations... which meant it is sort of a “Greatest Hits” for both bands. Yes, you get the “True Faith” and the “Love Will Tear Us Apart” songs. No fillers, only hits, as some fans put it.
Opening up the show was DJ Jake Rudh, who has a radio show/dance night called Transmission. The name is borrowed from Joy Division’s song, so Rudh’s taste in music is heavily influenced by Joy Division. The music videos on Rudh’s set included plenty of the usual alternative British bands (70s-90s), including Stone Roses (and always including David Bowie on all of his playlist).
Peter Hook and his band The Light (bassist Jack Bates, drummer Paul Kehoe, guitarist David Potts, and synths Martin Rebelski) took the stage at 8:15pm, as scheduled.
If you saw the Peter Hook & The Light’s “Substance” show in October 2016, this 2018 show sounds eerie familiar - down to the Prince dedication for “Atmosphere”!
However, there are some subtle differences: instead of three plus hours, the two sets were shortened by dropping a few songs from the playlist: New Order’s “Cries and Whispers” and “1963” and Joy Division’s “No Love Lost”, “Isolation”, “New Dawn Fades” and “These Days”.
For the lack of “1963”, I can totally stand with this decision, as it’s incredible hard to follow New Order’s most well-known double-whammy singles of “Bizarre Love Triangle” and “True Faith”. For the Joy Division songs, let’s be honest, Joy Division’s earlier singles, while a cult favorite, were really not that well-known... and dropping those songs speed up closer to their later favorites like “She's Lost Control”.
The dropping of these songs actually resulted in a tighter and more enjoyable show, in my opinion. You want the entire audience to sing along to the last few songs, which is how each set ended. Just watching the joy of the entire crowd singing back the words to “Bizarre Love Triangle” and “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was just a wonder. Even Hook had to comment, “You guys know the words better than I do!”
At the end of the show, Hook took off his sweaty “I♥MCR” (I Love Manchester) and threw it into the audience. This is a man who worked very hard to play for us, and truly loved his time in Joy Division and New Order.
Say what you will, but seeing as you’re never going to see Joy Division or New Order in Minneapolis, this is really the next best thing. Let’s hope we see Hook again when he comes back playing the beloved Republic and Technique album that he promised to do on the next tour. Very excited to see how this can be pulled off.
