It’s a massive three-day celebration with They Might Be Giants all weekend in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. We are happy to be able to cover TMBG’s Friday and Saturday shows (sorry St Paul!).
As you know, we’re longtime TMBG fans, ever since we heard “Birdhouse in Your Soul”, we’ve book hooked on their strange, smart, and very funny lyrics.
We last saw the band on their long-delayed Flood tour (rescheduled four times!) in Oct 2022 and wrote, “Of course, since they were playing First Avenue, the band had to play the First Avenue song, “Minneapolis”. The song came out in 2004, and tells the story about how “all the guys were having a fight” but all their hatred was left behind when they “took command of the First Avenue Stage… Stage! First Avenue Stage!” Since the band promised to play every song on Flood and also some songs from Book, it turns out that this is a massive undertaking. As you can see from the setlist, they had to break up the show into two full sets.”
Tour Dates:
May 14 Cincinnati, OH @ Madison Theater
May 15 Cincinnati, OH @ Madison Theater

PVRIS
with Pale Waves
at Uptown Theater
uptowntheatermn.com
Catch PVRIS (Paris) this June 14 at the Uptown Theater, before they head out on tour with Smashing Pumpkins.
We saw PVRIS in Sep 2023 and wrote, “Pvris pronounced Paris is described by All Music as “... dreamy electronica with dark, beat-heavy rock.” They are from Lowell, MA with Lynn Gunn, aka Lyndsy Gunnulfsen on lead vocals and guitar and Brian MacDonald covering most of the other instruments. Actually, it was a little difficult to see what he was playing for he was behind a mound of green bushes. (They were joined on tour by Denny Agosto on drums.) Pvris is supporting their current album Evergreen, which Upset Magazine described as “... flecked with ethereal escapism and a resilient sense of optimism.” The song “Evergreen” most matched this description with a hopped-up reggae beat played on what sounded like an accordian.”
Show up early to check out Pale Waves. The Manchester band, featuring lead singer and guitarist Heather Baron-Gracie, drummer Ciara Doran, guitarist Hugo Silvani, and bassist Charlie Wood, won the NME Under the Radar Award in 2018. The band’s third album Unwanted came out during the end of the pandemic, August 2022.
We Pale Waves in May 2017 and wrote,
“Their mix of electro-pop with jangly guitar is a similar fit as the night’s headliner and they like to also play in minimal lighting, with singer Heather Baron-Gracie looking a bit Robert Smith and sounding a bit Delores O’Riordan. “You’re very welcoming” Gracie blushed halfway through their twenty-five minute set, happy to see fans clap a long to a band they’ve likely never heard of, prior. “I don’t know what’s going on over here” Gracie mused, looking at stage right and the throng pogo-ing with raised hands, “it’s like a dance party”, as the band finished with ‘There’s a Honey’.”

Nat Harvie
with Alan Sparhawk and Brent Penny
at Turf Club
first-avenue.com
Minneapolis based Nat Harvie is having a CD release party for New Virginity (Boiled Records) at the Turf Club, in St Paul, on June 15, 2024.
The single “Shovel” from New Virginity, stars Nat Harvie & Nancy Sudak (Nat's Mom). Talking about the song, Nat said, “I made this video with my friend Hollis Sparhawk. Hollis is a visual artist and musician in Duluth, MN where I am from. I have wanted to make a film with her for a while, but it felt like a sign when we realized we have the exact same shitty camcorder. A month or so later I saw a picture of my mom, Nancy Sudak, with short hair in the early ‘90s, around my current age, looking over her left shoulder toward the camera, making a face that I might make, looking exactly like me. She used to look like I do now. Maybe I will look like she does now in the future. When I saw the picture I was looking into the past at my current self. With this video I wanted to mirror that experience into the future- her as my later self, me as my current self. With Hollis’ help we shot the video in about two hours, both styled as some sort of alternate reality pop star version of myself. We film each other in the video. We sing into microphones plugged only into each other’s microphones on a short cable. We create a mirror-signal that cancels itself out on the way through the cable to reach the other singer/other self. “Shovel” deals with childhood in a new way for me. I have sometimes participated in the popular queer trope of writing to the younger self to say “It's okay, there is a way to be, there is a good future you can’t imagine with people in it." “Shovel” is different. Here in the video the relationship is flipped – the younger self takes care of the older self, shares catharsis, becomes the self again. Age and experience are blurred. Childhood becomes the future. My mom tells me that when I was a young kid I used to ask her “when am I going to be a baby again?” – I guess that curiosity remains.”
Speaking of Sparkhawk, Alan Sparhawk will open… as well as Brent Penny on the bill.
