A two-and-a-half-hour rain delay... and then, History!
It was the closest finish in NASCAR Cup Series history at the AdventHealth 400, held over the weekend at the Kansas Speedway in suburban Bonner Springs.
Defending champion Kyle Larson topped Chris Buescher by literally an inch. The official victory margin for Larson was 0.001 seconds, overtaking the 2003 Darlington and 2011 Talladega races for the closest finish in Cup Series history. Initially, timing and scoring had Buescher as the winner, but after looking at the replay, NASCAR determined Larson had won the race.
The AdventHealth 400 is race 12 of 36 in the NASCAR Cup Series race and takes place at Kansas Speedway typically in May, with the Hollywood Casino 400, the thirty-second race of the season, held at the Speedway in September.
Larson had been driving smart all day, taking his time when needed and weaving down and high, to pass cars one-by-one to stay near the top of the leaderboard in every race stage.
Because of the rain delay, race Grand Marshal Richard Petty, nor his son Kyle, were not able to stay to shout the traditional, "Start Your Engines!" call once the rain had passed, so the task was passed down to un-retired driver Jimmie Johnson from the front seat of his vehicle, and who would end up in a crash, one of several on a damp track.
Also as part of the weekend, Corey Heim overcame some mechanical difficulties to take the Heart of America 200 Truck Series race, and Connor Mosack driving his 28 car, took the checkered flag at the Tide 150, both held the day before the AdventHealth400.
