Rachael Yamagata stopped by the Triple Rock Social Club last night, her third date on a new Fall 2015 tour.

This is just a quick post to get some basic information, tour dates, photos, and setlists online, as soon as possible.

As expected, Rachael Yamagata previewed some brand new songs from her forthcoming 2016 album. From what I've heard live, especially with the six-piece band (including Brandon & Anne), the new songs has a nice full 'wall of sound' feel to it, compared to her previous live efforts of mostly a girl and her piano.

The new album, in conjunction with her 10 year anniversary of Happenstance (to be available on vinyl for the first time) was 127% funded via Pledge Music, and the new songs Yamagata is very proud of.

You know I was pretty excited to see that Luna reformed and touring... that is until I looked over some of their semi-recent setlists and they did not include my favorite "Slash Your Tires" song. That is like if The Smiths reformed and not play "How Soon Is Now?". I wonder if this is a regional thing, perhaps the song was not popular in other countries, etc. Well if you do see them, expect them to cover Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine" for the encore.

Having been following Dean Wareham's whereabouts for a while, the reunion last year wasn't at all a surprise to me. After all, we've seen hints of it when Sean Eden joined a Dean & Britta show in New York a few years ago for a one-off Luna performance. It just made sense for a reunion tour.

Diane Coffee to open. Coffee is actually a guy, he is touring in support of Everybody's a Good Dog.

Singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata will be back in Minneapolis at the Triple Rock Social Club next Saturday. She will be likely previewing some brand new songs, from her forthcoming album, due for early 2016.

The U.S. leg kicks off on October 15th at Club Café in Pittsburgh and wind down on November 17th at Webster Hall in New York City.

My Name is You to open. We previously saw this duo (Brandon Walters and Anne Williamson) with Joshua Radin in 2013. Since the girl is from Scotland, the band came off as a bit of a reverse Swell Season.

As usual in Rocktober: there are too many shows.

Below are some shows taking place on October 17:

Los Angeles producer Destructo will be DJing at Rev Ultra Lounge. Note: late start time, ends at 2am (10pm/$20).

Bronze Radio Return are: vocalist Chris Henderson, drummer Rob Griffith, lead guitarist Patrick Fetkowitz, keys player Matthew Warner, bassist Bob Tanen, and harmonica player/banjoist Craig Struble. Celebrating their forthcoming album Light Me Up (DigSin), the band will be arriving at Turf Club in St Paul. Nashville's The Roosevelts to open. (8pm/$10).

The super popular Owl City will sell out the Varsity Theater. Yep, confirmed, sold out. Rozzi Crane to open. (7pm/$25/Sold Out).

Billed as "An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt", they will perform at The State Theatre . (8pm/$48.50).

Zombie Pub Crawl at Various Venues (Skyway Theatre, Mill City Nights, First Avenue, etc). This thing gets bigger and better deader every year. I remember when this thing was free... now it's just too big and over the top. I once made the mistake of seeing a regular music show in the area and was caught in a slow-moving traffic, no thanks to drunken zombies walking in the middle of the streets. “I feel like I’m playing to 12 people”, Joshua Radin exclaimed at the beginning of his intimate performance at the Dakota Jazz Club, a stop on his brief three week Wax Wings VIP Tour, playing to 350 seat or less venues in promotion of his self-released latest, Wax Wings (Glass Bead Music). His 84 min. performance came off as very personable- Radin answering requests and introducing himself to crowd members in a conversational and casual manner between songs that really did make the audience feel like they were witnessing something private and special.

MY NAME IS YOU

Opening the evening was My Name is You, a West Coast-based duo whose EP debuted at the end of 2011. Brandon Walters and Anne Williamson, she from Scotland, came off as a bit of a reverse Swell Season, the keyboards of Williamson more driving the songs than Walters’ guitar, but the delicate 30 min set, which included songs ‘Everything That’ and ‘Come Back’ deliver enough of the goods as a low-key musical appetizer, to set the table for the main course.

Ohio-born Radin stepped on to the stage solo after a short break, and seemed genuinely surprised by his surroundings (“this is weird, man”, he stated)– not used to playing a jazz supper club, feeling the need to cross his legs when playing in true singer-songwriter fashion, and asking several patrons their names and where they were from. Minneapolis always holds a special place for Radin; for it was here that his first sold-out headlining show happened …”and for Kirby Puckett”, he added, drawing applause.

Settling in, he opened with the sentimental ‘What if You’ and followed with ‘Closer’ before taking an audience request to play the non-album cut, ‘Old Friend’. His Paul Simon-like vocals shone on a song written in Minneapolis, in a cold bunk on his tour bus after a gig- the moving, ‘One of Those Days’, one of many odes pining for the return of an ex-girlfriend. Openers Walters and Williamson along with a drummer joined him for the majority of the set, Radin even dedicating two songs, ‘When We’re Together’ and ‘Today’ to Minnesota’s passing of the same-sex marriage act, signed earlier that day by the Governor.

Highlight of the show was undoubtedly an off-mike, acoustic spirited performance of Bob Dylan’s ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’, the first song he ever learned on guitar. The fact that Radin knew that Dylan was from Hibbing, MN made the song even cooler for the attending audience. After a short break, the encore was the somehow-appropriate ‘Winter’, a song that many locals have been living until very recently and in contrast he noted, to the 98-degree weather earlier in the day.

In the end, the ‘VIP Tour’ lived up to its expectations—a rare chance to catch an exceptional so-called ‘whispercore' artist playing his well-crafted songs, mixing in conversation and stories, in an exceptional intimate venue – For 84 min, we were all treated to the VIP experience.
