TV: Season 2

We’re still in that age of the COVID-19 virus… so we’re hungry for new content. Here are a few shows that got a Season 2 treatment. Usually if the first season is good, I’m more incline to check out the second season. Sometime, like in the case of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it’s the second season that the show got really good. In the first season, the writers are still trying to find their groove.

If a show gets a third season, the means that there is a good audience for it. Some shows, such as Doom Patrol, I doubt it will get a third season (since no one is watching it).

UMBRELLA ACADEMY

I was actually really impressed with the first season of The Umbrella Academy. I love the first season, but thought perhaps the star of the show, Ellen Page, was hardly used. Personally speaking, they could have just ended with Season 1 and I would be really happy with the series.

I love Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy as much as I love Season 1. Perhaps it is because Season 2’s storyline is beat-for-beat the same as Season 1 … including what caused the Apocalypse. I still love it, even though I had already guessed the ending midway in the season.

My only complaint about Season 2 is the usage of so much popular music. The family is stuck in the 60s, yet modern music was used in the soundtrack… it just takes you out in believing they’re in a different time period.

Speaking of music, Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book written by My Chemical Romance’s singer Gerard Way.

Condor: Season 2

Based on the novel Six Days of the Condor (which was also made into a 1975 film called Three Days of the Condor), this television show is now in its second season.

From what I can remember I actually enjoyed the first season… but had a hard time remembering what happened that led up to Season 2. After all, it’s been two years since Season 1 debut in 2018. I think to really enjoy Season 2, I should go back and re-watch the first season to refresh my poor memory.

Nobody watched the first season, because it was under the Audience network from AT&T. Earlier this year, AT&T decide to shut down the television network, so Condor was licensed out to foreign networks, such as RTÉ2 and C More.

Season 2 just couldn’t hold my attention. Each episode is an hour long, so it felt like they had to deliberately space and pace out the story and plot over a long period of time.

Alienist: Season 2

I had no idea there was The Alienist season 2. The first season ended in 2018, and it wrapped things up nicely… leaving no loose ends as far as I can remember. The period-drama was based on the novel by Caleb Carr… so when they solved that mystery, where can they go in Season 2?

Apparently, Season 2 is based on the Alienist sequel novel The Angel of Darkness… so it’s a brand-new storyline with the same characters we know and love from Season 1. If you never saw Season 1, I think you can start with Season 2 without any problems.

In Season 2, we find out that it’s a year later and Sara Howard (played by Dakota Fanning) is head of her private detective agency. The new mystery began with the wrongful killing of a mother accused of killing her baby. As usual, the “Jack the Ripper” gothic style and tone of the show is incredible. It’s only too bad that it took two years for them to finally air the new season.

Doom Patrol: Season 2

I bought Doom Patrol on Bluray when I saw it was on sale for $10. It’s a great show, and I am a fan of the original source material (owning a complete run of Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol).

Unfortunately, no one is watching Doom Patrol Season 2… despite the fact that it’s now available on HBO Max and DC Universe. To make matter worst, Season 2 ended abruptly with Episode 9, because of the COVID-19 situation. There was supposed to be one final episode to wrap up Season 2, but unfortunately, at the moment, the series’ fate is up in the air.

I randomly saw He's My Brother, She's My Sister with Edward Sharpe last year and was so impressed by them that I managed to sneak at Tycho's show to see the band at again at the 400 Bar.

The news broke yesterday that My Chemical Romance is no longer a band.

The brief message from their website:

Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We've gotten to go places we never knew we would. We've been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We've shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure.

The band officially didn't release anything since 2010, however there was supposed to be a new fifth MCR album which was being worked on as of February 2013.

My Jerusalem is from Austin, by the way of New Orleans, not Israel. They formed fairly recently, as of 2009, but got great buzz from SXSW (naturally) and CMJ.

Their new record called Preachers is the follow-up to their debut 2010 album, Gone For Good. Singer/songwriter Jeff Klein commented that the new record is "dark": "So much had changed since Gone For Good. We’d all kind of been through hell and back again in different ways, and this was the natural artistic result of all of that. But I think it’s a beautiful, comforting darkness. It’s real, but not selfish."

MY FIRST TOOTH myspace.com Today (March 23rd) is the last date on the My First Tooth and Frontier Ruckus tour. I wasn't given a biography on the band, it would seem like they're from England somewhere. From my understanding, and according to Amazon, that My First Tooth's two albums came out February and March of this year. Quite fast releases for both Territories and Love Makes Monsters.

Circuital is the new record from My Morning Jacket, to be released on May 31^st through ATO Records.

Fans of this rock band will get a taste of what’s to come by hearing a new song from Circuital recorded live last year for "It Beats 4 U", "Butch Cassidy", "The Way That He Sings", and "One Big Holiday", via their website, mymorningjacket.com

For those who aren't familiar with this band, they're from Kentucky and released their first album in 1999. By 2003, they signed with a major label, ATO, and by 2005 found huge success with their album, Z. I would like to think this is because the album was produced John Leckie, who previously worked with Stone Roses and Radiohead. Nowadays it seems that they're a Bonnaroo staple player.

Speaking of jackets, check out these AWESOME My Chemical Romance Jackets. I’m not really a fan, but I love these design, it’s semi-sporty and vibrant. Although, I will confess, they seem designed for younger people – looking really fitted and quite small.

I don’t know anything about the band, but apparently the styles are based on Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, as seen on their music videos for “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” and “Sing.” The jackets were designed by frontman Gerard Way (who has a great eye for design, I might add).

The prices are about $100 per jacket. I can tell you that it’s expensive, but if you think about it, for a very specific custom design clothing, it’s really not such a bad price. I’ve seen worst designer jackets for $500.

And yes, they’re on a national tour. They’ve sold-out Minneapolis, so… apparently there are plenty of fans here. Hope to spot these jackets out in the wild.

It's basically an Australian tradition, a relatively new one, I grant you, but if an Australia Day passed that I, at least, wasn't sitting next to the radio (or had one blaring loudly so that I could hear it in my beer drinking position), I would feel somewhat dirty! 

A little explanation behind the whole principle... Triple J, Australias government funded "youth" radio station, each year holds an election of sort, for the top 100 songs released in the previous year. This is thoughtfully names the "Hottest 100". Each January 26th, we sit down and intently listen from about 10am to about 6pm as Triple J plays the songs one by one, starting at #100 and slowly working their way to #1

Whether you are working (unfortunate for you being a public holiday and all), driving, eating, playing Yahtzee, jelly wresting in an inflatable pool down at the local beach, plying boule whilst someone supplies you with beverages and cooks a BBQ... it's somewhat blasphemous (in my eyes) not to have the radio tuned in.

I must admit, that this year, having recently started a new job and not being able to have the radio blaring all day every day, I have fallen behind when it comes to new music. So i was a little lost, in fact many of the songs that made it up there this year, i had never heard before.

Now, if you'll kindly cast your eyes to the left, you'll see the final list and because I'm biased, I have highlighted the Australian artists in bold.

It's quite interesting to actually look at what makes it in each year, because basically, it's the favourite songs of a large proportion of Australia's "youth". For instance, but looking at the list, you see that more than half of the songs are by Australian artists. This is frankly, quite awesome to see. But at the same time reflects the fact that Triple J does a great job of promoting local artists.

Focusing on the top 10. I guess you could say that the songs were pretty much all expected to be up there.

The Panics - winners of a JJJ award for their album "Cruel Guards" another of the volumous brilliant bands that come out of Perth (my theory is because there's not a great deal else to do there).... *ahem*

Daft Punk have had a massive come back this year just passed (not that they really ever completely went away). I too agree that they're quite awesome in the realms of electronica, but another case of "i like your old stuff better than your new stuff" exists in my heart for these guys.

Faker - well... i've said all I need to say about Faker. but i admit, appealing to the vast masses by giving them that standard brand of rock that is by no means, bad.... just boring.

Both Silverchair and the John Butler Trio made several appearances throughout the day. And deservadly so.

The only similarities between these two bands is that they are based in Australia, pump out some crazily catchy tunes and have singers who could well be mistaken for hippies. Although I must say that anyone who grows up in the Australian coastal city of Newcastle, as is the case for young Daniel Johns (and myself) and doesn't turn out as a surfy wanker, it's thumbs up from me. It was easier for me being a hater of sun, sand and also being female.

I can't say i'm a big John Butler Trio fan, but talentless they are not. Their songs are well constructed and meaningful.

In the case of Silverchairs' 'Straight lines', more than one person had picked this as being the number 1 song for the day. I was inclined to agree. In my opinion, there were not obvious stand out songs of 2006.

So when i came time to huddling round the radio, beer in hand, to find out what that number one song was, we were all in quite a state of confusion. What other bands had released albums in 2007?

No idea.

And I must say, the fact that Muse came in at #1 was a huge surprise. Considering that their latest album, Black Holes and revalations, was relased in 2006.

Being a huge Morrissey/The Smiths fan, people often ask me: "What's your favorite Morrissey song?"

My absolute favorite song is "Jack the Ripper". Casual fans might not be hip to this song, as it's somewhat of a rare song.

So, it's time the tale was told on "Jack the Ripper"! The song originally appeared as a B-Side on his single, Certain People I Know (Dec 1992). Like numerous fans at the time, I was collecting all the formats, CD Single, 12" and 7" (sorry, I never bothered trying to get the cassingle!). I bought the single at a record store in Berkeley, California, called Mod Lang, but I think at the time they only had the CD version.

Obviously, I fell in love with the B-Side. The song is so haunting and I just love these lyrics:

Oh, you look so tired
Mouth, slack and wide
Ill-housed and ill-advised
Your face is as mean
as your life has been

Crash into my arms
I want you.
You don't agree
but you don't refuse
I know you.

So, despite having a massive fan approval of this song, it was very strange that shortly after the single's release (reaching the UK charts at #35), that the single was instantly recalled and deleted. It was taken out of circulation and instantly became a collector's item.

I'm not sure what its value is today, but when I attended a Smiths convention many years ago, there were people willing to pay $100 in cash for the single (I'm sure someone could've swindle more money out of the desperate fans).

Morrissey liked the song enough to release a live version of it as a promotional single, preceeding his Beethoven was Deaf (1993) album. This live version seems also appear in several other compilations and singles including: My Early Burglary Years (1998), Now My Heart Is Full (1994), and World of Morrissey (1995).

Although the live version sounds, er, very muscular, it is missing the last stanza of the studio version:

It's come to my conclusion that Morrissey simply just hated the studio recording of "Jack the Ripper" and "You've Had Her" (the other b-side off Certain People).

Despite being such a rare song, here are some musicians who's covered this particular song:

AFI is a punk-turned-goth band from California. They were fairly underground before getting some massive mainstream success a few years ago when they changed their sound to more goth-punk. If you listen to their early releases, they don't really sound like anything recently. Although I can't recall off the top of my head, I think they've covered another Smiths song.

My Chemical Romance is kind of a hard-core rock band, based out of New Jersey. I don't really know much about them, as their sound isn't really my cup of tea. I just know that they look like they belong in a Tim Burton film.

Colin Meloy, singer/songewriter of The Decemberists recorded "Jack the Ripper" for his all-Morrissey cover EP (which was only sold on his tour in 2005). This version is acoustic and is the best version of the lot.
