DECEMBER
The Rutles (29 Dec 2019):
English comedian Neil Innes has died of a heart attack at the age of 75. Innes is famous for being part of the comedy group Monty Python and musician for The Rutles (the parody band of The Beatles). He was also part of The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band … who also lost Sam Spoon in 2018.
After Monty Python broke up, Innes joined his co-star Eric Idle as part of The Rutles. Innes would play the part of John Lennon, and wrote song parodies of The Beatles songs. The songs were so similar to the original, that Apple Records took the band to court.
The Rembrandts (24 Dec 2019): Allee Willis, one of the co-writers of the famous Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There For You” (recorded by The Rembrandts) has died at the age of 72. She is also known for co-writing such Earth, Wind & Fire’s hits like “September” and “Boogie Wonderland”. It’s reported that she died of a heart attack.
Roxette (09 Dec 2019): Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson has died at the age of 61, following a long battle with cancer.
The Swedish band had huge hits in the 1990’s, including “The Look”, and “It Must Have Been Love.”
Juice WRLD (08 Dec 2019): Juice WRLD has died at a very early age of 21, according to
Rolling Stone. The rising Chicago rapper topped the charts in 2019 with his album
Death Race for Love. Apparently he suffered a seizure at Chicago’s Midway Airport on Sunday, December 8th.
Mental As Anything (03 Dec 2019): Mental As Anything's founding member and songwriter Andrew “Greedy” Smith suffered a heart attack in his car on December 3rd. He was 63 years old.
Smith was the last original band member still performing on the recent Mental As Anything tour.
The Mentals were massive in Australia, we even wrote about them in
2008: “Again, there are a tonne of notable songs that I could talk about including the 1979 single "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" to “Mr Natural”, which was their most recent song to enter the Australian Top 40 charts in 1995. Two of the songs that figure most prominently in my childhood are “Live It Up” (1985) and “Too Many Times” (1981). Both more pop than rock, but Live It Up being significantly more reminiscent of what music was like in the mid-80’s.”

NOVEMBER
Kara (24 Nov 2019): Goo Hara (or simply known as Hara) was found dead at the age 28 at her home on November 24th. Hara is famous for being in the K-Pop band Kara, as well as appearing in the film City Hunter in 2011.
Media outlets are saying that her cause of death is unclear, but fans believe it was suicide because she attempted suicide in May 2019. What’s sad to say is that according to Variety, they pointed out that there’s an alarming rate of suicides among K-Pop talents since the late 90s (including actress Jang Ja-yeon and, recently, Sulli). Many complained of a highly toxic environment.

Lynyrd Skynyrd (06 Oct 2019):

Finally, local songwriter and record producer Ed Ackerson has died at the age of 54 to cancer. He was most famous for being in Polara (who we saw in 1995), and later in his career formed BNLX. We saw BNLX’s very first live show at the Sauce in March 2010.
Throughout the years, I’ve seen Ed Ackerson at many live concerts (as an audience member), and usually would usually say hi. He probably didn’t know who I was, but he was also nice.
The Muffs (02 Oct 2019):
We are sad to learn that lead singer and songwriter for The Muffs, Kim Shattuck, has died after a long two-year struggle with ALS. She was 56.
The news came from her husband, Kevin Sutherland, writing, “This morning the love of my life Kim passed peacefully in her sleep after a two-year struggle with ALS. I am the man I am today because of her. She will live with all of us through her music, our shared memories and in her fierce creative spirit. I love you always my Kimmy. Thanks for sharing your life with me.”

SEPTEMBER
Grateful Dead (23 Sep 2019):
Poet, lyricist, and musician Robert Hunter has died at the age of 78. He was most famous for writing for The Grateful Dead.
Hunter knew Jerry Garcia in 1961, prior to forming The Grateful Dead (briefly known as The Warlocks) in 1965. Hunter wrote the lyrics for three of the Grateful Dead’s early hits, including “China Cat Sunflower”, “St. Stephen”, and “Alligator”.
Clutch (16 Sep 2019): Clutch’s keyboardist Mick Schauer had also recently died. Their Facebook account wrote, “We are saddened to hear the news of Mick Schauer’s passing. Mick was an incredible talent and he will be missed. His contribution to the albums Robot Hive Exodus and From Beale Street to Oblivion brought a new sound to the band at a time when the band sought to stretch into new territory. Mick helped us to achieve those goals and more. He was also a powerful force at our live shows. His natural ability was unmatched and his love for the music made us all play better. We are grateful for having had the opportunity to make music with you Mick!”
The Cars (15 Sep 2019): The Cars singer/songwriter Ric Ocasek. According to Yahoo, the autopsy report said that Ocasek died of cardiovascular disease at the age of 75.
As you know, The Cars are most famous for their song “You Might Think” … which won them Video of the Year at the MTV Music Awards in 1984. Their self-titled debut album sold six million copies.
Eddie Money (13 Sep 2019):
One of the biggest names in music, Eddie Money recently died from complications from heart surgery. He was 70.
We all suspected he was going to die when it was revealed in August that he had stage 4 esophageal cancer, but to hear that he died only a month later - it’s still a bit of a shock.
Eddie Money was probably most famous for “Take Me Home Tonight”, but he also had a string of other hits, including “Baby Hold On”, “Two Tickets to Paradise”, “Shakin’”, and “I Wanna Go Back”.
Daniel Johnston (11 Sep 2019):
Also, singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston recently died of a heart attack at the age of 58.
You may recall that we’re big fans and wrote about him in
Sep 2009 and was scheduled to see him in person in
August 2016 … but unfortunately he had missed a connecting flight and had to cancel his concert appearance.

AUGUST
Peter Fonda (16 Aug 2019):
The Easy Rider, himself, Peter Fonda has died at the age of 79. Fonda is from a family of famous actors, as the son of Henry Fonda (whose The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles is named after), brother of Jane Fonda, and father of actress/singer Bridget Fonda.
While most people might know Peter Fonda as an actor, he did dabble in being a singer after a recording of a 7” in 1966 called “November Night”, backed with “Catch the Wind” (a Donovan cover).
Fonda also starred in the film Outlaw Blues, which is about a musician, and as a result required him to sing with co-star Susan Saint James for the film. The two songs from this film “Outlaw Blues” and “I Dream of Highways” appear as a 7” from Capitol Records.
Also, notably, The Primal Scream sampled Peter Fonda from The Wild Angels 1966 film as the intro to their song, “Loaded” (which the film The World's End used to good effect at the film’s start).
Silver Jews (07 Aug 2019): Singer/songwriter David Berman, from Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, killed himself by hanging on August 7, according to Medical Examiner Rules via pitchfork.com.
Silver Jews formed in 1989 by Berman, along with Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. It’s often mistaken by casual fans that Silver Jews was a “Pavement side project”, but it was really its own entity. Silver Jews broke up in 2009.
The Kinks (01 Aug 2019):
Former The Kinks keyboardist Ian Gibbons has died at the age of 67.
According to ultimateclassicrock.com, singer and co-founder Ray Davies said, “To simply say Ian will be missed would be an understatement. When he auditioned for the band, he only played a few chords before I knew he was the right guy to have on keyboard, he seemed to know the right voicing to musically slot in between the other members of the band. And with the Kinks, that took some doing!”

JULY
The Neville Brothers (22 Jul 2019):
Art Neville, the founding member of The Neville Brothers and The Meters (and later known as The Funky Meters), has died at the age of 81, according to a statement released by his longtime manager, Kent Sorrell, via CNN. Neville was 81.
Neville was probably most famous for being in The Neville Brothers with his brothers, Aaron, Charles, and Cyril. It should be noted that Charles Neville died of pancreatic cancer on April 26, 2018, at the age of 79.
João Gilberto (06 Jul 2019):
Bossa Nova pioneer João Gilberto has died at the age of 88.
One of the most famous Bossa Nova song, “The Girl from Ipanema” was a collaboration between American jazz musician Stan Getz and Gilberto. Joao’s then-wife Astrud Gilberto lent her vocals on the recording, because Joao couldn’t sing the song in English (Joao sang the Portuguese version). That magic of rhythmic Brazilian sound and jazz influence, plus the whispery singing style of Astrud Gilberto - it was a winning formula.

Doris Day (13 May 2019):
I caught the news about the passing of actress and singer Doris Day a few days ago (May 13), but hadn’t had the time to organize my thoughts on her death.
Like many stars of the 50s and 60s, they were definitely a little before my time, but obviously I love her music, thanks to hearing other people’s cover and interpretations (such as Sinead O’Connor and Line Renaud).
Koerner, Ray & Glover (29 May 2019):
Blues harmonicist Tony Glover passed away on May 29th at the age of 79 to natural causes, according to local Twin Cities newspaper.
Tony “Little Sun” Glover was important to the West Bank (Minneapolis) folk scene in the ’60s, and later created the blues trio Koerner, Ray & Glover with “Spider” John Koerner and Dave Ray.

Les Reed (15 Apr 2019): Les Reed, co-wrote (with Gordon Mills) the song “It’s Not Unusual”. The song was originally offered to Sandie Shaw (one of Morrissey’s idols), but she turned down the song.
Of course, the song became a massive hit for then-unknown singer Welsh singer Tom Jones. Listening to the song, it did kind of have that nice Decca sound that was big in the mid-60s. Les Reed died on April 15.
Brad (05 Apr 2019):

MARCH
Scott Walker (22 Mar 2019):
American-born, British singer Scott Walker, formerly of The Walker Brothers, has passed away at the age of 76.
Walker was a teen heartthrob in his band The Walker Brothers (who were not actually related), and after breaking up with the band, he spent his solo career exploring different type of music (outside of pop rock music). He influenced everyone from Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) to Thom Yorke (Radiohead), and even newer artists like Bat for Lashes.
Dick Dale (17 Mar 2019):
Surf rock pioneer Dick Dale has died on March 17. The “King of Surf Guitar” created the surf music style, which was influenced by Middle-Eastern music scales with reverberation. Dale influenced a generation of guitarists, including Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.
According to californiarocker.com, they mentioned that he had “been quietly suffering health issues for many years.”
The Modern Lovers (10 Mar 2019):
Asa Brebner, the American guitarist, singer, and songwriter for The Modern Lovers has died at the age of 65. When Greg “Curly” Keranen left the band in 1977, he was replaced by Brebner (who would go on to play on The Modern Lovers Live (1978) and Back in Your Life (1979). Keranen came back and left again (!) in 1984, so the mid-80s Modern Lovers had Asa Brebner rejoining for the tour and recording from 1985-1988.
According to vanyaland.com: “Brebner was credited as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, cartoonist, author, and producer, and in addition to The Chartbusters and his own solo efforts, also played in bands like The Modern Lovers, Mickey Clean & the Mezz, The Grey Boys, The Family Jewels, The Naked I’s, and Asa Brebner’s Idle Hands. No cause of death has been made public.”

By now, you’ve all head that Keith Flint, the singer of The Prodigy, took his life at the age of 49. According to
The Guardian, his body was found at his Essex home on Monday (March 4th).

FEBRUARY
Talk Talk (25 Feb 2019):
According to NME, Mark Hollis, lead singer and songwriter of Talk Talk, has died at the age of 64.
Talk Talk were huge in the early 80s, thanks to their synth-pop catchy singles like “Talk Talk” and “It’s My Life” (No Doubt covered the song in 2003). After bassist Paul Webb left he band, Talk Talk signed with Polydor (from EMI), and released Laughing Stock in 1991, before finally throwing in the towel and quitting.
Foggy Mountain Boys (24 Feb 2019):
We got a press release that Country Music Hall of Fame and Foggy Mountain Boys member Mac Wiseman has also died on February 24, at the age of 93. Wiseman was a popular bluegrass vocalist and is known for his Dot Records interpretations of songs including “Shackles and Chains,” “Jimmy Brown the Newsboy,” “I’ll Be All Smiles Tonight,” and “Love Letters in the Sand.”
The Monkees (21 Feb 2019):
American actor and musician Peter Tork has died at the age of 77. Tork was best known as keyboardist and bassist of the Beatles-parody made-for-television band The Monkees. This is the second Monkees to die (Davy Jones had a heart attack and died in
February 2012).
We saw Tork and fellow Monkees, Micky Dolenz, at Wizard World Minneapolis a few years ago, and heard them explain how they wanted to write and play music (as the Monkees), but the show’s producers would not allow it… instead relying on seasoned session musicians. Still, that didn’t stop Tork from writing and playing instruments on some songs.
What we reported in
May 2017: One of the thing that came out of the discussion was that the actors were musicians (except for Dolenz, but he would later learn), and begged the studio to let them write and play their own songs. The filming schedule was grueling and that also left little or no time to create original music.”
Fred Foster (20 Feb 2019):
Also, just quickly, Country Music Hall of Fame member Fred Foster (founder of Monument Records and publishing company Combine Music), just passed away on February 20, 2019. He was 87.
Foster is credited as producer behind all of Roy Orbison’s biggest hits (including “Oh, Pretty Woman”, “Only the Lonely”, and “Crying”). He’s also known for producing some major hits for Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Billy Grammer, Ray Stevens, Kris Kristofferson, the list goes on and on…
Cadet (09 Feb 2019): British rapper Cadet, who was involved an automobile accident on February 9th. He was 28 years old. Like these other working musicians, Cadet was on his way to Keele University to perform a show.
Albert Finney (07 Feb 2019):
Actor Albert Finney died on February 7 at the age of 82.
Although he's known mostly as an English actor, producer, and director of films & television... but he’s been known to sing, if the roles required him to do so. Finney sang in three films Scrooge (1970), Annie (1982), and Corpse Bride (2005).
More importantly, he had been a great inspiration to Morrissey (singer of The Smiths), and have often appeared in many of the band’s images and cover artwork.
Legarda (07 Feb 2019):
Next, is Colombian singer and YouTube star Legarda died on February 7th, after being shot in the head in an Uber. He was 29. The singer was out to promote his new single “Nutella” when the crime took place. According to many Columbian musicians, they cited that crime and violence are rampant in their country.
Carverton (06 Feb 2019):
The most bizarre and tragic of these deaths is for 24-year-old Nashville musician Kyle Yorlets, the singer of Carverton, who was shot dead on February 6 by a gang of teenagers! The oldest gang member is 16 and youngest at 12. These children mugged Yorlets and shot him for his car keys. Since most of the kids were under the age of 13, per local law, their identities have not been released to the public.
Carverton's upcoming single "Misery" is coming out February 22, 2019.
Transit (02 Feb 2019):
Founding member of Transit, Tim Landers, has died on February 2, 2019, according to altpress.com.

JANUARY
Harold Bradley (31 Jan 2019):
Also, worth a mention is that American Hall of Fame country musician, Harold Bradley, passed away on January 31, 2019, at the age of 93.
Kyle Young, CEO of Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum issued this statement:
For decades, Harold Bradley went to work doing something that he called 'playing.' He surveyed every sonic situation and determined what he could do to make things better, more melodic, and more harmonious. There are lessons in Harold's approach to playing that go far beyond music. He lived his life with kindness, gentility, and discretion. On hopeful days, I will try to view Harold Bradley as an inspiration and not an aberration.
The Browns (19 Jan 2019):
Country singer Maxine Brown (not to be confused with soul singer Maxine Brown) of The Browns, has died at the age of 87.
The Browns were a family band, featuring Jim Ed Brown and his sisters Maxine and Bonnie. The American country and folk music vocal trio, known for their 1959 Grammy-nominated hit, “The Three Bells”.
After they broke up in 1967, Maxine did try a solo career, releasing one album called
Sugar Cane County. Maxine’s death was the last of the three Browns, Jim Ed died on June 11, 2015 and Bonnie died about a year after, on July 16, 2016.
The Hollies (05 Jan 2019):
Six-string bassist Eric Haydock of The Hollies has died at the age of 75.
According to bestclassicbands.com, Haydock’s death was confirmed by Hollies co-founder Bobby Elliott, “Along with Tony [Hicks], Eric and I were the rhythm section that created the springboard for [Allan] Clarke, Hicks and [Graham] Nash to launch that famous three-way Hollies harmony…On the early package tours, Dave Clark, the Kinks and artists of the period would watch from the wings as we effortlessly rocked the screaming theatre audiences into a frenzy…Although Eric left the Hollies in 1966, I occasionally listen enthralled by our BBC and Abbey Road recording sessions and dear Eric masterfully playing his six string bass.”
Captain and Tennille (02 Jan 2019): Daryl Dragon, aka “The Captain” of Captain and Tennille, has died today (January 2nd) to renal failure, according to
NBCMiami.com. The Captain was 76.
Captain & Tennille was known for such hits like “Do That To Me One More Time” and their signature song “Love Will Keep Us Together”. Unfortunately, love did not keep them together, as we previously wrote about their divorce in
early 2014.
