Max Baker, a founding member and lead guitarist of the St. Louis classic rock band, “Mama’s Pride”, passed away on March 26, 2022. He and brothers, Pat & Danny Liston, formed the band in the early ‘70’s and remain a vital part of the St. Louis music scene to this day, nearly 50 years later. Their song, “Blue Mist”, (written by Pat Liston and appearing on their self-titled, debut album) was voted the #1 KSHE Classic in a listener’s poll by KSHE 94.7 in St. Louis, topping the list, which included songs by Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Derek & The Dominos, Santana, Black Sabbath, Rush, Deep Purple, Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon, Elton John, Kansas, The Allman Brothers, Neil Young, Steely Dan, Yes, Peter Frampton, Meatloaf and numerous other higher-profile artists of both national and international fame. After opening a couple of shows for “Lynyrd Skynyrd”, during the early part of their 1977 tour supporting the “Street Survivors” album, Pat Liston was approached by Ronnie Van Zant and informed that he was interested in producing the next “Mama’s Pride” album. Unfortunately, Ronnie was killed in the plane crash that also took the lives of Steve & Cassie Gaines, as well as severely injuring other members of “Lynyrd Skynyrd”. Had that tragedy not occurred, “Mama’s Pride” may well have become a much more recognized band with the release of their third album, which would have potentially been produced by Ronnie Van Zant.
