Movits! came from northern Sweden to bring their jazz/hip hop fusion music to Minneapolis at the Varsity Theater on Sunday, April 10th.
Helping them get the party started was Koo Koo Kanga Roo, one of my favorite Minneapolis band. This was my third time seeing the band, so I knew what to expect: a lot of fun.
If you've never seen them, they are two dudes called Brian and Neil (Neil is the one with the 'stache).
I'm probably missing a few songs, but in chronical order, they did: "LMNOP", "No Crust", "Hopscotch", "Friendship Bracelets", "Dinosaur Stomp", Pirate song (don't know the actual title), "Ninja Pup", "What's That You Say?", "Rollin in the Minivan", "Shake Yo Foot", and song under the sheet. I'm sketchy on some of the songs because I was busy participating on the dance moves.
Prior to Movits! coming on stage, we had Zacke and his DJ doing a brief four song warmup. I didn't know/understand any of their songs, but I did made a mental note that the song that had the banjo from the DJ was the best one.
An intro theme song was played and then Movits! came on stage: featuring singer Johan Rensfeldt, saxophonist Jocke Nilsson, upright bass player Magnus (at least that's what I heard during the introduction of the band) and DJ/guitarist Anders Rensfeldt.
Listening to Johan talk between songs, he seems like he's struggling with English. I didn't have trouble understanding the man. According to him, they're from a very "hick" part of Sweden (the north) and he seems proud of it.
Since all of their songs are in Swedish (or if they were sung in English, like the final song on the set, "Sammy Davis Jr", I couldn't really tell if they threw in a nordic word or not). From the banter on stage, their songs are about "the f word", love songs ("shoot me in the head!"), and Swedish politicians (I think for "40 Bars").
Favorite song of the set was "Na Na Nah", for obvious reason (the lyrics are international!).
There were three songs for the encore, which seems unusual for me (lately, I've only been treated to one or two songs). The best of the encore was "Fel del av gården", which got a huge response.
If you catch Movits! on tour this year, be sure to check out their videos on youtube (Diary Video #1 and Diary Video #2 just went live). I'm sure Minneapolis will be shown there, as Johan mentioned that this was the most beautiful venue they've ever seen. And it's probably true, The Varsity Theater is amazing, and that's why it's my favorite concert venue.
