It’s a shame that Slothrust will not be at the Fillmore show, however Texas duo Missio and Divide The Fall will open.

We saw Missio in May 2017 and wrote, “Opening up the show was Austin duo Missio, featuring singer Matthew Brue and producer David Butler. For their live shows, they’re joined on stage by a live percussionist…. The band played tracks from their then-forthcoming Loner album, such as ‘I Don't Give a...’ (the recording of the record featured Zeale). As always the duo was very thankful that fans knew and help promote their breakthrough single ‘Middle Fingers’ (the single peaked at #9 on the Alternative charts), which ended their brief 35-min set.”

I don’t know anything about this band, but man, Japanese bands are the coolest. We’ve seen a fair share of J-bands, and can tell you that they also have the best merchandises (anything from key chains, pins, original artwork, patches, plastic rings, and even hand towels?!?).

We caught the band in 2016 and noted, “Essex, UK band Nothing But Thieves didn’t have to commit any crimes to attract attention- the band is gaining more than enough on their own, clearly on the rise and obviously already playing too small a venue, on their recent sold-out stop to the Turf Club in St. Paul.”

The first time we saw Sylvan Esso in November 2013, we knew they were special from her Mountain Man days.

Sylvan Esso’s last MN show sold out, so it’s no surprise that the band sold out both dates at First Avenue.

Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner new project Flock of Dimes will open. We previously saw the band in October 2016 and noted that Dimes uses more synth and beats.

Liverpool’s Echo and the Bunnymen is back at First Avenue this August 9th.

The current band line-up consists of original members Ian McCulloch (vocals, guitar) and Will Sergeant (guitar), plus touring members: Gordy Goudie (guitar), Stephen Brannan (bass), Jez Wing (keyboards), and Nick Kilroe (drums).

The band last released Meteorites in 2014 (which they did tour for the record in August 2014).

Experimental, post-rock, shoegaze band Ester Drang will open the show.... the band is one of Echo & the Bunnymen’s favorites, as they previously also opened up for the Bunnymen in September 2016.

Ester Drang’s been around for over twenty years, and their latest album Rocinate came out on Jade Tree Records in 2006... however a new single ‘Union’ was released on July 17, 2017. You can hear it on soundcloud.com.

DJ Jake Rudh will play music videos before and between sets.

Musician singer and songwriter K.Flay just headlined First Avenue last Wednesday, May 17th, in support of her new record Every Where Is Some Where (Interscope/Night Street).

Opening up the show was Austin duo Missio, featuring singer Matthew Brue and producer David Butler. For their live shows, they’re joined on stage by a live percussionist.

The band has been on tour with K.Flay since November 2016, when she was on her “Crush Me” tour.

The band played tracks from their then-forthcoming Loner album, such as ‘I Don't Give a...’ (the recording of the record featured Zeale). As always the duo was very thankful that fans knew and help promote their breakthrough single ‘Middle Fingers’ (the single peaked at #9 on the Alternative charts), which ended their brief 35-min set.

The first time we saw K.Flay, she was a special guest at the Go Show #1 in March 2015. We wrote, “ They had a minimalistic setup, with only a computer (with keyboard) and a live drummer. My favorite song on her set was ‘Wishing It Was You’ (taken from her debut album Life as a Dog), which had the lyrics, ‘I'm sucking on a bottle of Jim Beam, wishing it was you.’ By the end of the song, she produced a full bottle of Jim Beam and took a gulp.”

She eventually returned with The Mowglis in November and most recently at the sold-out Fine Line show in February 2017. The latter show, we described as, “Fitting that Valentine’s eve brought in the Crush Me Tour, with Kristine Meredith Flaherty a.k.a. K.Flay having the alt-rock versatility of a Swiss army knife, in promotion of her upcoming 2nd full-length, Every Where Is Some Where (Night Street / Interscope Records) due out April 7th. The Chicago area native can sound hard and industrial, rap like M.I.A. or twenty one pilots, or just plain strap on a guitar and rock out, depending on the song.”

With only a mere three months since her Fine Line show, the setlist was somewhat similar, including her version of ‘It's Strange’, a Louis the Child song, but does feature K.Flay on vocals.

The key difference between the Fine Line show and this First Avenue show is its audience. You see, Go 96.3’s audience is slightly more pop music fans, while the 93x’s audience at First Avenue leaned to the hard rock/metal audience. Still, it didn’t matter if the audience liked pop, rap, or heavy rock, they all move to songs like ‘The Cops’ and ‘Hollywood Forever’.

K.Flay’s Every Where Is Some Where is out now. She will be joining Imagine Dragons on their stadium rock tour starting in late September.

The 1975 is back in America to promote their #1 US and UK sophomore album I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it (Dirty Hit / Interscope Records).

We’ve been covering the UK quartet since their US debut in October 2013 and recently covered their First Avenue show in 2015 and we can tell you that they’ve consistently sold out their Minneapolis appearance.

This year, the band upgraded their venue to St Paul’s Roy Wilkins Auditorium, which is not our favorite venue, but at least it may be big enough to accommodate all their fans.

Show up early to check out all the buzz for Colouring. The London band is touring on the strength of their debut EP Symmetry and their new single ‘The Wave’. The track is taken from their upcoming EP, due from Interscope Records in mid-2017.

With strong local support from radio station Go 96.3, K.Flay has been invited to the Twin Cities since Aria in March 2015 and just recently at Fine Line in Feb 2017.

The Los Angeles-based pop/hip-hop singer is back on tour now for her second album Every Where Is Some Where.

Austin’s Missio to open. The band previously opened for K.Flay on her Crush Me Tour. The duo’s breakout single ‘Middle Fingers’, which was quickly picked up on SiriusXM’s Alt Nation (where it hit the #1 spot on the influential “Alt-18 Countdown”). The song will likely be available on their debut record Loner (available May 19th).

Suitcase Junket One-man-band The Suitcase Junket (aka Matt Lorenz) opened up the show. Lorenz had all the musical instrumentals in his “band” at an arm’s length... complete with leg percussions and Caleb Hawley Side 2 EP by American singer/songwriter Caleb Hawley, just came out last night, September 9th. Obviously Side 2 is the follow-up to Side 1, which came out earlier this year. The New Yorker

The one-man-band (Matt Lorenz) was previously in town in April 2017, and we noted, “Lorenz is no stranger to being on stage and managing a variety of instruments, as he was one of the member of trio Rusty Belle, with his sister Kate. After finding a guitar from a dorm dumpster, Lorenz fixed it up and started working on songs that would soon would be known as his The Suitcase Junket project.” Del Barber and Jillian Rae to open. 7:30pm, $10.

05/18/17-05/19/17 The two martins, Steve Martin and Martin Short is doing a two-night residency at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. The show is called “Steve Martin & Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Lives” with The Steep Canyon Rangers and Jeff Babko. 7:30pm, $79.

K.Flay (aka Kristine Flaherty) will be headlining the Fine Line Music Café this Wednesday, November 9th. Although the name sounds like a rapper, you know K-Dee, K-OS, K-Solo, and Kay Slay, K. Flay is nothing like those guys. She first came to our attention in 2010 when she played CMJ - however most people probably noticed her when went on the Warped Tour in 2014, promoting her debut record Life as a Dog.

Her new EP Crush Me came out on Night Street Records (a subdivision of Interscope Records), and the upcoming tour is in promotion of the EP and various singles that came out (including ‘Blood in the Cut’).

Illinois’ Chicago Farmer (aka Cody Diekhoff) will be in town at the Cedar Cultural Center next Wednesday, November 9th, touring in promotion of his 7th album Midwest Side Stories. As the album title suggests, these collection of songs are original little stories about “hope, depression, job loss, meth, skateboards, a divided nation, used cars, the late shift, farms, factories, the destruction of our environment...” typical of any folk singer / songwriter / storyteller.

If you’re in the Illinois area, Chicago Farmer & Still Shine will be playing a New Year show at the Crusens War Memorial in Peoria.
