Mindy Smith stopped by the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, last night, August 2nd.
Opening was Rosi Golan, which we were told was from Israel and can speak five languages. I believe she's currently living in New York, and her music is acoustic folk.
Songs from Golan's set included songs from her sophomore album, Lead Balloon, including "Everything is Brilliant" and the title track.
Mindy Smith had a guitarist and percussionist as her backup band. The music is a little more low-key, which is perfect for a restaurant atmosphere. Interestingly enough, her percussionist sat in the front and played a modern la cajón.
Smith suffered from a non-live acoustic guitar, so she used her alternate guitar for the majority of their set. This resulted in her having to tune her own guitar than the much-preferred swapping guitars method.
Her music is more along the line of singer/songwriter than your typical country-pop star. In fact, the most "country" she got was when she closed out her set with "Tin Can."
Most of her set had songs from her self-titled fifth album, including "Closer," "If I," "Sober," "Pretending The Stars," and "Cure For Love."
When the band stepped off stage, I thought for sure that the band weren't going to do their cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene." But I was wrong. After the encore of "One Moment More" (per a fan's suggestion) and "What Went Wrong", the band launched into "Jolene." Everybody was toe-tapping and bopping their heads; clearly, this was the highlight of the show.
Mindy Smith is currently on tour for her self-titled fifth album, out now via her own label, Giant Leap.

Our first thoughts on the Rosi Golan and Mindy Smith show at the Dakota Jazz Club.
Topics discussed:
• Dakota Jazz Club might be a misnomer? Not strictly a jazz club.
• Mindy Smith ended her encore with her cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene."
• A "big sound" from a three-person band. Percussionist was sitting on the la cajón (from Peru).
