“Bubblegum Dog,” is the second single from MGMT’s album Loss Of Life. The music video accompanying video, directed by Julia Vickerman and co-host Tom Scharpling, finds MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser paying tribute to numerous scenes from classic ‘90s alternative videos.

“We all saw the video for "Bubblegum Dog" as an opportunity to combine the charming, DIY, surreal, cardboard craft aesthetic of shows like Yo Gabba Gabba and The Mighty Boosh with these ultra-serious grunge videos we grew up watching on MTV – all that heavy, brooding angst smashed up against absurd childlike fun,” Vickerman and Scharpling say.

“Ben and Andrew are legitimately funny guys, so we were excited they got to really go for it with their acting, paying homage to the eternally moody mid-90's rock stars they looked up to when they were kids,” they continue. “They were completely game for everything, playing around with different wigs/costumes/personas/facial hair and continually chiming in with new ideas along the way. That was a wonderful feeling, because it let us know they were having a good time. For the climax of the video, they let us shoot gallons of pink slime at their faces, which we appreciated. Ben got quite a bit in his mouth, which was unintentional … but he thought it was funny, so then we were allowed to think it was funny.”

Loss Of Life will be coming out February 23, 2024, on Mom + Pop Music. The upcoming record is the long-awaited follow-up to 2018’s Little Dark Age.

Ahead of Blue Monday, Ed Cosens releases “Doghouse,” the follow-up to last October’s release of Black Dog, which came out on World Mental Health Day.

“‘I’m in the Doghouse again… the couch is my only friend.’ This song exists for and because of those moments where you know you’ve messed up, totally put your foot in it, but that unshiftable male pride or sense of misplaced righteousness is only making things worse,” says Cosens. “It’s time for a good dose of damage limitation and to know when to shut up, just bloody apologise and pray for redemption. But you fear the worst. Maybe just maybe you’ll be forgiven… maybe.”

If you don’t know who Cosens is, he is in Sheffield’s Reverend and the Makers and co-wrote the UK top ten single, “Heavyweight Champion of the World”, which we said in Jan 2008, “"Heavyweight Champion of The World" was the first single from them, released last May. I love this song, and lately it's been playing nonstop on my iPod since Reverend and the Makers's debut album The State of Things, released September 2007 (I actually don't have their album because I refuse to pay $31 for an import). ”

Cosens will soon be announcing details of his highly anticipated sophomore album and accompanying tour.

Nashville’s Lost Dog Street Band (band leader Benjamin Tod, fiddler Ashley Mae, upright bassist Jeff Loops, drummer Ben Duvall, and pedal steel player Tebbs Karney) will be heading out on tour in 2024.

Tod is excited about the band lineup, “I am excited to share our new full band on the road. Adding Ben on drums and Tebbs on pedal steel opens me up so much for expression. I’ve had to hold back so much the last few years in hindsight. Being able to really pull back on my guitar playing allows me to focus in on my vocals. It helps when I’m on stage now that I can actually feel the music and get into the music being played.”

The band was last seen in the Minneapolis/St Paul area in Jan 2017 with The Devil Makes Three, “Expect plenty of singalong on this North American tour, which began in September and will end this February 2017. The DVD came out last October, but it recently made its way to streaming on HBO Max.

Synopsis:

After a long five year absent since MGMT’s last self-titled album, the duo (Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser) is back with their fourth album Little Dark Age. The record was produced by MGMT, Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, Kelela, Blood Orange), and long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, Tame Impala).

While the two worked on and off, it was only with the recent election of Donald Trump as President of the United States, was when MGMT was really inspired to finish their fourth album. Of the election, VanWyngarden questioned, “We were like, ‘Wow, is it actually possible for the most impossible thing to happen? [...] Apparently, we were more inspired to write pop music after evil took over the world.”

Tuesday sees Denver-based Tennis at the Varsity Theater, in Minneapolis.

We last saw Tennis with Sharon Van Etten at First Avenue last year, but the husband/wife duo (Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore) is back as headliner. Opening up will be regular W♥M alumni: On An On and Savoir Adore and Nathaniel Rateliff.

Tennis will be supporting their latest EP called Small Sound, which follows 2012's Young and Old. Look for a new full-length album from Communion Records in 2014.

When Cults originally booked their show in 2012 at the Fine Line, it immediately sold out - so the band got an upgrade to a larger-capacity show at First Avenue. Even at last year, I noticed how much buzz the band had, particularly when I saw them in Canada and they were the belle of the ball.

Anyway, when we saw them as headliner, they basically played every song known to them, plus throwing in a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows". So, when Cults come back to Minneapolis November 22nd, expect them to play new songs from their Static album, which was recently released (October 15th) on Columbia Records.

Opening for all November U.S. dates will be Mood Rings, the Atlanta-based five-piece, with a new album called VPI Harmony .

Opening up will be Dinosaur Bones, a band that we previously mentioned was a Toronto indie rock band, out touring in support of their sophomore album, Shaky Dream (Dine Alone Records).

So next week, April 13^th, you can get MGMT's highly anticipated album, Congratulations, at most music retailers. However, the album leaked online and the band moved to streaming their entire album via their official website. They actually originally wanted to offer the album as a free download:

Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn't make sense to anyone but us.

Between you and me, I do not think offering downloads will harm MGMT at all. I think this will just serve to help them in the long run. In fact, the duo actually gave their Oracular Spectacular album originally as a "demo" album called Climbing to New Lows a few years before signing to Columbia Records/Sony Music. Despite giving away their music, they still end up pretty well-off as history have proven.

Oracular Spectacular went on to become one of the hottest album of 2007, debuting #1 on Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and #12 on the UK album chart. I believe this is based on a number of things, like their visual imagery and music videos, but for the most part, the internet has a huge role in their success.

Since then, their music's (mostly their single "Kids") have been included on a number of games and movies.

So, where do we find MGMT's Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden this time around? Congratulations feels to me like a winding musical journey through modern pop music. There are the obvious pop/single songs ("Flash Delirium"), but overall, this 9-track album works as one piece.

As for the journey bit, there is one song that really stood out for me: "Siberian Breaks". This epic number is basically ten or twelve different songs. It shifts, it changes melodies and lyrics and will confuse you into think it's both an old time 60s folk and 80s synth and the future music. This is one of my favorite track from the album, because it's so different, yet still remain in that MGMT universe of mixing and mending different music and sounds.

In regards to synths, to me that the band's been heavily influenced by electronic-dance type music, so it's not a wonder to find that they gave a nod to Brian Eno on their song, "Brian Eno". Although that song contains a more upbeat/rock music with a ton of lyrics, it's clearly the all instrumental track, "Lady Dada's Nightmare", that is trying to emulate Eno. In addition to that homage, they also must love post-punk with "Song For Dan Treacy" (a tribute to 80s band Television Personalities).

So, I guess congratulations are in order for MGMT's Congratulations. Based on what I've heard and seen, they are going to do really well. If you're not convince, listen to their album on whoismgmt.com. The album comes out April 13^th, via Columbia Records

I leave you now with their video for "Flash Delirium". The video is very strange, with bizarre characters and costumes. The whole thing, directed by Andreas Nilsson, feels like it was inspired by David Cronenberg's Videodrome. Read what you will, but that phallic worm thing and sticking into this hole in the machine, just looks disgusting and sexual. Awesome video, right?
