Louisville’s Freakwater will be in town at the Cedar Cultural Center this March 16th, touring in support of their Bloodshot Records debut record, Scheherazade... their first album in ten years!

Hopefully the band will make it to Minneapolis in one piece, as today, they announced that their rental van is broken and was forced to cancel their show in Atlanta.

The thing about Freakwater is that it features two lead harmonizing vocals from Janet Bean (of Eleventh Dream Day) and Catherin Irwin.

Hunter Valentine has been a force to be reckoned with for over a decade. This all-girl rock band has had four successful releases and a remarkable live show. Unfortunately, they have announced an indefinite hiatus so what better way to treat their fans one last time by embarking on a last hurrah tour.

Along with the tour, Hunter Valentine has announced that they will be releasing new music and videos in the coming weeks. It's sad to see them go but at least they're going out with a bang. This is a tour you will not want to miss.

Local all-girls favorites Sick of Sarah has been scheduled to co-headline the gig.

Spend St Patrick’s Day with local punkster Dillinger Four this Thursday, March 17th. The show is dubbed “Saint Patricks Day Massacre”.

We caught the band at the free Pizza Lucé Block Party in 2015 and wrote, “The crowd seemed a bit tame for a punk show but like I mentioned, people were just there for a good time, not necessarily because they were diehard fans. There was a small pit that broke out during their set. I'm pretty sure that in said pit, people were saying "excuse me" as they lightly pushed other people around. How's that for 'Minnesota nice'?”

Celebrating with them will be Nato Coles & The Blue Diamond Band, Bug Fix and Cherry Cola.

Minneapolis-based, by the way of Moonrise, Iowa, The Pines will be headlining First Avenue this Friday, March 18th. The last time we saw the band in 2013, we wrote, “ It was really funny, because the scarecrow they had behind them almost fell down a couple times. I have seen them about three times, and I have to say it was a good performance. They commented on how they love playing at the Cedar.”

Also, Phil Cook (from Megafaun and Hiss Golden Messenger), originally scheduled for the Turf Club, got upgraded to the mainroom. Cook is currently touring in support of his debut solo album Southland Mission.

NPR's David Dye listed the record as one of his 10 favorites of 2015, noting, "The great guitarist and sideman Phil Cook, from Megafaun and Hiss Golden Messenger, unleashes his formidable songwriting on the album he's been working on all his life."

“Megafun!”

What is ‘Megafaun’:  animal, vegetable or mineral?  Why is Megafaun, whose dulcet tones never cease to baffle the critical observer?  Who is Megafaun, seen prowling the tempestuous landscape of indie-Utopia?  Careful, you might blink and miss the beard.

As if one could avoid the wild rumpus surrounding the best thing to come out of Eau Claire since founder of Menards franchise, John R. Menard, Jr.  If the Cedar’s crowded mainroom was indicative of devout presence, Megafaun may very well be the new Messiah of Midwest roots rock.

The trouble with classifying the band as ‘roots rock’ is the inevitable resignation that occurs—a byproduct of oversimplification.  To hear Megafaun is to experience a whirlwind of regional and generational enthusiasm, at once familiar and disjointed.  There’s the obvious nod to Americana and canyon folk, plus a little jazz infusion, and also WEIRD EXPERIMENTAL SHIT.  You heard right:  experimental jazzy Americana.

While Friday’s show was an overall success, it was difficult at times to find a consistent groove.  The band’s most approachable music leans heavily on a time-tested formula:  beautiful harmonization and picturesque prose.  Take “Kaufman’s Ballad,” a traveling cavalcade of banjo plucks and pretty, musing lyrics, so easy on the digestive system, Metamucil’s taking notes.

Conversely, during brief interludes from the pretty was the messy.  I’ll be the first to admit that experimental music has about the same effect on my soul as an awkward crotch scratch:  feels good at first but always leaves a rash.  That’s cool.

 

Megafaun - Cedar Cultral Center, Minneapolis 4-9-2010

Megafaun is a trio of talented musicians, no one’s arguing, but towards the end of the show when the brothers Cook (and surrogate bro Joe “Cool Guy” Westerlund) ventured to a dark, ultramodern place, many of us chose not to follow.  Brains went on sabbatical.  Butts fell asleep.  It was a wee bit boring.

Fans may argue that one of band’s strengths is their effortless ability to cross genres.  This is true.  However, unless the audience is comprised entirely of musicians, an 8-minute indie “jam” loses its charm quickly.  Contrary to the epileptic man sitting behind me—whose legs flailed about, possessed—mind-bending drone rock does not promote foot stompin’.  (And the people want to stomp their feet, goddammit.)

Minor grievances aside, Megafaun is a band to keep watching.  In addition to sharing a distaste for barbers, Brad and Phil Cook demonstrate the power of good genes in synchronized vocal laps, with the former’s hearty baritone occasionally pulling ahead (on tracks like “The Fade”).  Westerlund’s bang-for-your-buck beats keep the feet in steady stomp, and the whole package sounds real good on a brisk, starry night.  If you can bear the occasional creative detour, definitely take these boys for a ride.

The Antlers announced their Spring touring schedules, including dates with Phantogram and "the most blogged band" The National. I do like Phantogram and have seen The National play before, so Antlers are going to be in good company.

Deer Tick is a band out of Rhode Island, they've already have two albums under the Partisan Record Label, and they already have a third one called The Black Dirt Sessions, coming out June 8^th, 2010. Not surprisingly, recorded at the Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York.

If you've never heard of them, Partisan Records has a free digital sampler, which has two songs from Deer Tick (a demo version of "Art Isn't Real (City of Sin)" and "Smith Hill").

If you're already a fan and can't wait for the album to come out, the good news is that they're on tour, and possibly will be playing some of those newer songs. I will be at the Triple Rock on Friday to check them out. Although, I will have to admit that they have a tough act to follow up, as Those Darlins are the opening act.

Technically, not really an animal, a faun is a mythical creature of half man and half goat. Recently fauns are getting some attention in the Percy Jackson books. Anyway, I've previously wrote that the band had a "strange mixture of sound" and that I really like "The Fade" from their album, Gather, Form & Fly.

Megafaun is a neckbeard, folky band from North Carolina. Pitchfork loves them (recently gave Gather, Form & Fly a 8.1/10) and Stereogum calls the trio, band to watch: "neatly splice together different strands of sounds".

It would seem they've continued their strange mixture of sound on their latest album, Gather, Form & Fly (just released July 21^th on cute and awesome handmade Hometapes Records).

Starting with a simple mostly-acoustic instrumental "Bella Marie", it quickly turns into mountain folk banjo-driven "Kaufman's Ballad"- which I quite like. There's old timey pianos on "Impressions of the Past" (the first part of the song is pretty not listenable to me), reflective country folk on "Worried Mind", hoedown/goodtime jam on "The Process".

They also seem to enjoy pitting opposites against each other, like organic sound (the rain and birds on "Darkest Hour") mixed with weird warped computer sounds effects. I could go on, but let's just say that Megafaun's music are all over the place, yet strangely remaining true to their folk roots (possibly due to their banjo and harmonica usage). While I think this will work for most people, I feel the album is too uneven for me.

When the band is at their best, is when they start sounding like early R.E.M., especially on "The Fade". Unfortunately, none of their other songs is like this one.
