Fuck Buttons was conceived by Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power in the winter of 2004, Bristol UK
That’s probably enough history to go on for now…
With a twinkling intro giving way to deep electric humming, Fuck Buttons opens their album, “Street Horrrsing” as a dreamy, drone-y fairly pleasant headache. The screeching lyrics behind “Ribs Out”, the second track, complement nicely, chattering like a construction site of monkeys working on a deadline. (The songs flow seamlessly from track to track more in the style of a long DJ set. I like that, and helps make an already jarring album slightly less so.) The beats and synth-rythym build over the course of the 6 song album, alternating anxiously in complexity and depth. More than a cursory listen wakes the listener to the subtle magic these two are shooting for, and if not totally successful, they make a damn fine go of it.
If there are monkeys in hell, (and I have no reason to believe there aren’t,) this is the noise they make while tearing off your arms. Seriously.
The album continues to build in much the same way, vacillating between, A). causing the listener extreme levels of uncomfortable heart/bowel clenching and, B). trying to draw the listener in against his or her will. Personally, I like that sense of “Why am I doing this to myself?” Kind of like repeatedly hitting your ear with a wooden soup spoon until it bleeds.
The album on the whole, while maybe not terribly accessible, simultaneously reinforces and blurs the the line between organic-trance and industrial-dance. Hardly a casual listen, it’s an album worth having because let’s face it, sometimes we all need a good punch in the head.
