Brazilian singer/songwriter Marisa Monte made a rare Minnesota appearance at the State Theatre in Minneapolis on Saturday. The American tour is support of her 12th album Portas (Phonomotor/Sony Music).
There was no opening act needed, as Monte would require their time so she can give us a full two-hour set of some of her best songs spanning over three decades. If you love Monte’s music, you certainly were getting, to turn a phrase, the full Monte.
The special “Portas” tour had a big production, featuring a full band - eight band members, including a brass and horns (and flute!) section. Some instruments, such as the cajón, were only used once - yet they had to bring it along because one of the songs required it. Most bands would rather just drop the song on their set or just play the song without the required instrument.
There was also a massive video backdrop with custom videos (synchronized to the music). Not to mention that there were three on-stage costume changes throughout the set.
We’ve seen some shows that required costume changes, but they usually had to step off stage (and we’re presented with some intermission video)… but every minute counted, so they had designed her dresses to come off and on in a blink of an eye. There seems to be a lot of thoughts and efforts put into this tour and its staging.
It’s been a while (due to COVID) that Monte was able to perform live, so seeing her smile brightly on stage, singing her heart out, you can tell that she’s beyond thrilled to visit new places and meet her fans from across the globe.
Let’s talk about her dedicated fanbase… they showed up, and they sang along. I was especially impressed with the fans helping Monte sings out to “Bem que se quis (E po' che fa')”. Monte didn’t even finish, she just walked off stage as the crowd adoringly finish the song.
With all the love in the room, it’s easy to see how Monte have sold over 10 million albums and won numerous awards.
Marisa Monte’s latest album, Portas, is out now on Phonomotor/Sony Music.
