The Hotline Spring Tour, featuring Magic Man, The Griswolds, and Panama Wedding, made a stop at The Varsity Theater on Tuesday night and entertained the young crowd with the indie-electro-pop sounds of all of the bands.

Panama Wedding

The show started with Panama Wedding, a New York based synthpop band fronted by Peter Kirk. Kirk has a beautiful voice that is matched perfectly by the subtle but upbeat instrumentation of the band. Apparently Peter used to be a solo act which totally makes sense, but the addition of the band just gave their music a little extra something that kept the crowd entertained throughout the half hour set.

The cover of The Killer’s “When You Were Young” that Panama Wedding did was beyond perfect and just another example of how great Peter's voice is. It's not easy to hit some of the notes in that song and Peter did it absolutely flawlessly.

The Griswolds

The favorite of the show seemed to be co-headliner The Griswolds from Sydney, Australia. This band had the crowd in the palm of their hand and for good reason.

The last time I saw these guys was when they opened up for New Politics last fall and I knew they would be something big. Their music is perfect. It's grungy when played live but still approachable for the college kid demographic that came out to the show.

There's a reason why Kevin Ray of Walk the Moon claims to be an honorary member of the Griswolds. It's quite clear that these guys are on their way to becoming one of the next groups to hit the Walk the Moon level.

Heartthrob singer Christopher Whitehall had the girls in the audience screaming as he took the stage. They played for almost an hour and played majority of the songs off of their debut album Be Impressive (Relativity, Wind-Up Records). They were also able to slip in a few new tunes that proved they are going to stay true to their sound and that they will continue to release poppy songs with a little bit of edge to them.

Magic Man closed out the show, playing selections from their two albums Real Life Color and Before The Waves (both available on Columbia Records). This electronic-pop group from Rhode Island definitely had the energy of a headliner. From the moment the music started to the very bitter end, they kept the energy up and kept the crowd jumping up and down with their poppy sound and upbeat tempos.

Their music is very indie electronic and features a lot of keys and other miscellaneous sounds but Alex Capow's vocals prevailed over everything else. His voice is a bit smoother than many of the electronic bands out there. He sounded like a straight up pop singer but because of the instrumentation behind him, the overall sound was extremely unique and enjoyable.

The Hotline Spring Tour continues in May.

The Boston synthpop band Magic Man (Alex Caplow and Sam Vanderhoop Lee) is co-headlining with The Griswolds this spring, as part of the “Hotline Spring tour”, on the strength of their debut Before The Waves.

We previously caught Magic Man on their first headlining tour and noted that they could play a much bigger venue the next time around.

The Griswolds had a busy years last year what with playing over 100 shows, celebrating the one-year anniversary of the debut LP, Be Impressive, and becoming one of the best loved new bands on the planet. This Australian pop band has toured with some of the biggest names in the scene right now including Walk The Moon, New Politics, and oh so many more.

Vancouver-based indie pop duo Rococode (Laura Smith and Andrew Braun) is kicking off their US Spring 2016 tour at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis next Tuesday.

The tour is in support of their new sophomore LP Don't Worry It Will Be Dark Soon which came out February 26th via Marquis Label Services.

Speaking about the four years it took to release that difficult second album, Braun explained, “It’s taken us longer than we would have liked to get this album ready, but in all that time we hope to have created something that is both current and will stick around for a while — certainly a tough feat in the current climate of endless musical choices.”

Rococode’s current single “Hunter Gather” was at #1 on Canada's the CBC Radio 3 Top 30.

It’s all in their name – “They’re magic, man!”

The rising Providence/Boston band Magic Man just made a buoyant and sold-out stop at the 7^th Street Entry in Minneapolis that did, in fact, show some musical magic.

Vinyl Theatre

Milwaukee quartet Vinyl Theatre opened up the show with a very brief 25-min set.  They proudly wear their Death Cab for Cutie/Killers influences on their sleeves, and had no trouble getting the crowd to follow their lead of singing along or jumping up and down.  There were some minor feedback problems midway in, but no one seemed to mind as they were too busy singing along, especially to the set closing, ‘Breaking Up My Bones’.

Electrogram is Vinyl Theatre's latest release, out now via Fueled By Ramen.  Ironically, the record is not (yet) available on vinyl...

Great Good Fine Ok

In contrast, Brooklyn's Great Good Fine Ok had a slightly longer 40-min set.  Highlight of their set, was midway into their song ‘By My Side’ as Luke "the Shredmaster" Moellman did his best keytar solo.

Their music is on the more funk/disco-side, thanks to Jon Sandler's falsetto-singing style and fancy satin-looking gold jacket.   Love or hate it, you can't ignore that the audience ate it up... even loudly stomping and chanting "One more song!" after the band exited the stage.

After paying dues opening up for Walk the Moon, New Politics, Sir Sly and Panic! At the Disco, Magic Man seemed incredibly eager to finally tour as a headliner.  Talking to fans that had already seen the band multiple times, they suggested that they could play a much bigger venue the next time they come back, and the show being long sold out, attested to that.

X marks the spot

The young and enthusiastic quintet (Alex Caplow- vocals; Sam Vanderhoop Lee-guitars and keyboard; Gabe Goodman- bass; Justine Bowe- keyboards; and Joey Sulkowski-drums) had an equally young and enthusiastic audience, with many waving their X’d out hands in the air, designating them as under-21.

The band’s first major full-length release, Before the Waves (Columbia/DMZ Records) was released last July and their time spent touring and developing a growing fan base, is starting to show dividends.  Their upbeat alt-pop synthrock sound is addictive and ideal for riling up a small club of mostly college students.

‘Waves’ was a well chosen opener to their hour-long set with its chorus, “We'll forget the past, dear, and learn to live for this”, lyrics which encouraged everyone in the crowd to live in the moment.

Bowe’s anchoring keyboard riffs often sounded like something taken out of the early 80’s, while Caplow moved from side to side, jumping about and reaching out to the crowd, and Lee’s guitars and keyboard work were relaxed, yet surgically precise.

The band must like immortalizing locations, as they have many named after actual places, starting this night with ‘Nova Scotia’ from their 2013 EP, You are Here. ‘Catherine’ turned into an audience sing-a-long, which was followed by the slow-tempo’d ‘Honey’, then a new song, rumored to be called ‘Waiting for the Sun’.

Setlist

For ‘Texas’, Caplow encouraged everyone to “make some thunder” for the song’s intro, by stomping on the venue’s floor, which all happily did.  The beginning of the encore surprised many, as the band returned storming on with a pitch-perfect cover of Jimmy Eat World’s ‘The Middle’ and ended with their biggest single to date, ‘Paris’ and the crowd singing the chorus back to the band.

The “magic” is definitely there for the group and expect them to again headline next time through, but no doubt at a larger venue, as they seem poised for even bigger success.  They’re “magic, man.”

Here's a band that needs no press or introduction - Pearl Jam. It's been a very long time since they were in town, but since they were already headlining Austin City Limits, they decided to add 10 additional shows to their schedule in October.

And yes, the show is sold out.

In the basement of Milk Studios Saturday night, Boston band Magic Man played an intimate midnight show for invite-only guests. Record label and live promoter Communion Music hosted the exclusive event, in which guests at the venue, Milk Studios, ventured between the eighth floor reception room where guests drank PBR (and later Jameson) and had a gorgeous view of the Hudson River or looking down, a portion of the High Line, and the basement where the bands like Magic Man performed.

As is with most studios and gallery spaces, the building is chic and clean with mainly black and white aesthetics. The basement, however, is reminiscent of college days where people partied underground. Pipes are exposed, running horizontally across the low ceiling with Christmas lights strung around them and in among them are three disco balls (two of which work). The walls have magazine cut-outs of models and naked women, and neon signs that say “XXX,” “Girls Girls Girls,” and “Budweiser.”

“Oh man, these are like our basement days… our first shows. College—woo!” said Magic Man lead singer Alex Caplow in between songs.

Some bands would be intimidated with a venue where the end of a ground platform stage and the start of the crowd are at the same point, but not Magic Man. Caplow sang and tilted the mic stand into the crowd and other band members had no qualms dancing along with the audience. Perhaps the band’s approachability is why people in the crowd danced without inhibitions, doing more than just the usual head bob. Of course it helps that they play synthpop-rock-y, energized music. The bigger hits with the crowd (though honestly most people were dancing throughout the set) were “Texas,” “Every Day,” and “Paris.”

“We’re so happy to be here with you,” Caplow said to the crowd and sentiments seemed to be returned as a girl in the front later said, “Why are you so good? I love you!”

It's that time of the year again: CMJ Music Marathon in New York! The music festival is taking place this year on October 15th to October 19th! And YES, we are covering it this year!

Like other similar-style festivals, CMJ does not take place in one location, but rather over various venues near and around New York City.

Here We Go Magic plays a PledgeMusic CMJ Showcase at Heath at McKittrick Hotel October 17.

The Brooklyn band has three albums and one EP, the latest album entitled, A Different Ship. The single “Make Up Your Mind” from the album gives off a tension-filled, slight shoe-gazey vibe while the more upbeat-sounding “How Do I Know” ignites some head-bopping or even some unique robot dancing. Their sound has been described by the NY Times as a creative extension of “the systematic art-rock heritage of New York bands” combined with European influences like Radiohead.

Here We Go Magic’s singer and songwriter Luke Temple will be touring with his solo act through November.

CMJ Music Marathon goers have a chance to see New Zealand band Ghost Wave at six shows this year. They play at Pianos and Le Poisson Rouge (CMJ NZ Showcase) October 15, Knitting Factory October 17, Judson Memorial Church (KEXP session) and Fontana’s (CMJ Showcase) October 18, and back at Pianos October 19.

As fellow New Zealander Lorde brings the beats and minimalist sound to the U.S., Ghost Wave brings a psychedelic sound with the 60’s British vocals. Listen to “Here She Comes,” the first single off their debut album, Ages, released in late August.

Coming off from touring with Walk the Moon, Boston band Magic Man plays three shows for this year’s CMJ Music Marathon: October 17 at Bowery Ballroom and Santos Party House, and October 18 at Spike Hill in Brooklyn.

Their September released You Are Here EP’s single, “Every Day,” has over 45,000 plays on Soundcloud already. Their talent has not gone unnoticed for not long ago, they were recruited by Ellie Goulding to remix her single, “Burn.”

Le Trouble plays three shows for CMJ Music Marathon this year: Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 and The Delancey on October 18, and Living Room October 19.

Listeners will have no trouble getting up and moving to Canadian band Le Trouble. If their soon-to-be released debut EP, Reality Strikes, is any indication of how their live shows are, audiences will definitely be bopping around. Check out their single, “Real Talk (Part 2)” and on tour.
