I don't have a Rolling Stone subscription anymore, but I did randomly pick up the latest issue, featuring Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. You can actually read some of the interview online.

Before you get too excited about this (at least on CoverWall as I have not tested this on my iPad), not all the articles are available for access. Some issues only have one or two articles (and not necessary the main cover article). Still, it is kind of fun to take a look at old magazine covers.

If the cover reflects America's music and pop culture, then I'll have to apologize for the year 2010 for all the sex covers!

I've had my Zinio account since I had an iPad. This was one of the first apps for digital magazines that I had any interest in.

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you on preferring glossy paper magazines. The fact is, a typical magazine is too expensive and over time you are forced to toss them out. I've done it; I had to throw away four years of magazines when I moved recently.

The digital version offers these benefits: it's usually cheaper (sure, not much, but it'll add up over time) and you get to keep the magazines in your lifetime. Ten years in the future, assuming Zinio will be around, you can still access those magazines you purchased and take a trip down memory lane!

So, why should you use Zinio over, say Apple's Newsstand, you ask? The simple answer is if you decide to use Android or your PC, you can't view those magazines because it only exists on the iOS world. With Zinio, I can read it mostly anywhere, such as Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows 8 smartphones, tablets, laptops and home computers.

How about Zinio over, say, Spin Magazine's flashy app? You do not need an active internet connection to access the magazine you've already downloaded. Once you downloaded the magazine, you can go airplane mode and enjoy it offline. That's not the case with Spin's application, which is one of the reasons why I left this subscription. Ironically, I did notice that Spin is offered on Zinio's service.

ROLLING STONE (Jun 2013)

So I recently downloaded the latest (well last month) issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. It was fast, I was able to start reading right away (it was downloading as I was reading the first pages). On the iPad app, Zinio offers "Text" version of the same article. Not all articles had a Text version, so it's inconsistent, but I reckon this has more to do with the magazine company providing the plain text with their magazine.

The other thing that I liked was the "text only" contents, which clearly display the main features and articles. Pressing the title will automatically take you to the corresponding pages.

Reading the magazine was a pleasure, with crisp images and clean text. As display gets better, I believe it will eventually replace paper versions… even though I'm still not quite ready to let go. If you haven't tried out Zinio, give it a chance. Take a test spin via their free articles section.

Incidentally, if you want to invest in the all-digital format, this may be the way to go: Zinio's Z-Pass. For $5 a month ($60 a year, cheaper than Netflix), you can get three magazines a month. You can pick and choose titles month to month, or you can stick with the subscription model. For magazine lovers who still can't get enough, you can add additional titles for $1.50 each. As of this writing, only about 300 titles are being offered, but I believe they are the more popular titles anyway, so you shouldn't have a problem picking the right titles based on your interests.

Loaded's latest issue (March 2013) featured Johnny Marr, but their February 2013 clearly shows Morrissey's head under a naked woman on its cover. As I have previously mentioned, this is a lad's mag.

Finally, not to be outdone, Q Magazine's March 2013 issue put Morrissey (circa 1986-era) photo with the captions "The Ten Greatest Gigs... Of All Time". Then on the lower corner, we also see a modern Johnny Marr answering questions "for cash". Is this a new thing? Do fans send in money to have their heroes answer their questions? And if that's true, why would you ask "What did Morrissey’s teenage bedroom smell like?" Trust me, no one wants to know.

Riot grrrl in the strangest places

It's weird, but lately I've come across articles on Bikini Kill and Riot Grrrl stuff in the strangest places! As we have previously mentioned, Bikini Kill celebrated their 20th anniversary last November with their re-issue of their debut EP. I want the re-release, even though I already own the CD of their first two records, but I actually could not figure out how to order from their website (perhaps it's sold out?).

FRONT MAGAZINE
Gives new meaning to "girls to the front!"

FRONT MAGAZINE #177 is a men/boy's magazine about topless girls in trainers (sneakers). The magazine is like FHM (before they banned nipples), but not as "classy" as MAXIM. The magazine is more like Ralph (Australia) and Loaded (who is the primary rival in the UK). While most magazines have ceased printed editions, it seems that Front is going strong with its "lads' mags" reputation.

Strangely, they published a full article on the Riot Grrrl bands in last month's issue. The four-page article compiles the best-known Riot bands: Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile, L7, Babes in Toyland, and, of course, Pussy Riot. Personally, I would have added Le Tigre to the mix, considering they added Heavens to Betsy and L7!

THE VERGE
Meanwhile, a technology news agency called The Verge recently published a Bikini Kill article called Bikini Kill is making things again (published February 1st).

The Verge started when editors at Engadget left because of upper management disputes from AOL. Now they are (bitter?) rivals, but between you and me, I still like Engadget because it's easier to read "blog style". Hey, I just want to load everything in one place without having to click on anything. That's just how I like to read.

Anyway, the Bikini Kill article focused on riot grrrl revolution in the age of Spotify and iTunes, so there is a tech-angle to the whole thing.

The article is best summed up here:

Still, her [Kathleen Hanna] punk rock sensibility doesn’t allow her to write off the open internet: “In one way, I like the idea of everything free and streaming because it seems cooler and more punk rock — but the reality is that then people in bands have to have day jobs to survive, and that might mean they make fewer records or break up altogether.” She also says that she doesn’t know how we could “put the genie back into the bottle,” now that music is simply out there, free to consume.

Site Update (May 2011)

Assassins of Kings

I am sick. I don't know how it happened, but it's not fun coughing and wheezing. I did manage to do two podcast recording, with Sally and Cristina, which will likely be edited for this week and next week's show.

I also picked up The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, at Walmart, which came with a lot of bonus items like a DVD and Soundtrack (all at the normal cost of a game product). They are on the right track, I definitely feel like you get more value out of it, when this is the 'standard' version of the game. There is a collector's version, which is way too expensive for my blood ($129).

Unfortunately, the game is plagued with problems. Activation was a nightmare (finally got it to work eventually), downloading bonus content wasn't working (it kept saying the code was bad, when in fact, it was the correct code - eventually this worked out), and the game does not work on my Nvidia 7800 SLI. I understand that this card is old, but I can run modern games on it just fine at 1280x720 (which I'm OK with). But seriously, they need to fix some of these bugs... but I don't think they will because their minimal support is Nvidia 8800 card, just a generation above mine. So, right now, it's not recommended if you have an older card.

Since I can't really play it until they patch it, or if Nvidia update their drivers, I might actually go back to the first Witcher game, which I never finished.

The bonus soundtrack is composed by Adam Skorupa & Krzysztof Wierzynkiewicz, and it's what you expect for a gaming soundtrack. The DVD is in Polish, so be prepared to read a lot of subtitles.

I got the latest Spin Magazine in the mail today and it's pretty sweet that they are offering not one, but two, free albums this month. Like I've previously mentioned, it's free for all US residents. You can grab them at spin.com/itunes (expires June 30^th) and spin.com/itunes-lolla (expires Aug 31^st), what a good deal! Especially for Sleater-Kinney and Isobell Campbell.

While you're enjoying the free music, you can consider subscribing the magazine. For one year, it's $9.95. I do recommend the print version, you get more content for the buck, and I've always been a fan of glossy magazines vs digital ones.

Not to say that the iPad digital version doesn't have a lot going for it, but it just seems like the iPad version is more or less about pictures and very, very few words. The only advantage you have on the digital Spin Magazine is that you can stream the month's soundtrack, and "breaking" news is constantly flowing. I actually turned off auto-renewal for the Spin digital magazine, but I am definitely keeping my print subscription.

That's not all, for late April and this month (May), you can purchase a 2-disc special Spin Magazine "Must-Hear Music" edition, available only at Target stores. For the price of the magazine $4.99, you get two 16-track bonus CDs, featuring Mumford & Sons (they are on the current cover), and The Strokes (they were on last month's cover).

As a result, we're getting a ton of mobile traffic, and suddenly the song we posted by Scattered Trees climbed up the Hype Machine's Twitter Chart. I think by the time you read this, it would've dropped off the charts, but here's a screen capture (see picture).

Overall, this is one of our better Britpop show, our tenth show on this sub-topic within the W♥M Radio shows.

The show is split into two topics: News and upcoming events with Britpop.com.au. They are currently running a "The Songs that Saved Your Life" Best B-Side contest. You can apparently win chips & records.

Select Magazine (April 1993)

The second part of the show is all about British magazines. We touch on some of these: Select Magazine, Q Magazine, Vox, NME, Melody Maker, The Face, Word, Uncut Magazine, Mojo, and a few other music-focused magazine. Most of these magazines are monthlies, with the exception of the weekly NME and MM - although eventually MM was shut down by IPC (the UK's largest magazine company, currently owned by Time-Warner).

As for the future of magazines, I was just at the shop today and "big" magazines costs $29 - as much as a softcover book. Surprisingly, the price of the latest Mojo magazine is relatively "cheap" for $9 and comes with a free CD. Looking at my old 1991 magazines, the average prices for those were $3, compared to today's cost of $10 or more.

Recorded in the same session as Britpop Top Ten Countdown (which I still consider the best show ever), this super hard quiz was written by some hardcore journalist at Q Magazine, published in a paperback book called Q Quiz Book. Blondie - Heroes The Last Town Chorus - Modern Love

Uncut Magazine must really love David Bowie. This is the second CD they put together featuring cover songs of some of Bowie's greatest songs. The first Bowie cover collection (Starman: Rare and Exclusive Version of 18 Classic David Bowie Songs) were from their March 2003 issue.

Most of songs on the new CD, Rebel Rebel - A Tribute to David Bowie (available free on their June 2008 issue of Uncut Magazine) were studio recording and most have appeared elsewhere. Some live recording, such as Mott The Hoople, didn't sound that good to me.

I haven't had the chance to read the David Bowie article, but flipping through it, it seems to be quotes from famous and modern musicians talking about 30 of David Bowie's greatest songs.

As of this writing, I'm too lazy to find out where each song previously appeared in, but I did noticed that they used The Last Town Chorus' version of "Modern Love" on this album.

Continuing on with my magazine coverage, we have the biggest US "music" magazine: Rolling Stone.

Although the magazine had its origin in news and music, they're actually more interested in movie stars and pop culture than music. Of all the major music magazine publishers out there, I have never liked RS.

So why do I have this issue you ask? Well, my brother had a free subscription for a year, so I ended up adding the magazine to my collection (since he never read it).

 

The main story that I'll be talking about is the Courtney Love vs the former Nirvana band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. I remember really hating Love (haha) after reading this article.

 

 

Nirvana - You Know You're Right

After Cobain's suicide in 1994, there was a long legal battle over the rights and management of Nirvana's music. Love contests that Cobain only shared the royalties out of kindness and she wanted full control of the Nirvana empire.

The real losers in this court battle are the fans, who haven't heard anything new since In Utero, which was released in 1993.

It should be noted that shortly after the Rolling Stone article that Love and surviving Nirvana members settled out of court and a few months later the greatest hits Nirvana album was released. Included in this album was the final Nirvana studio recording of "You Know You're Right".

Since then, a Nirvana boxset appeared: With the Lights Out (Nov 2004) (selections from this boxset was released under the title Sliver: The Best of the Box in Nov 2005).

And I remember the first time I heard Smells like Teen Spirit. It was during the short period MTV actually played music... Most likely on 120 minutes. Strange how these services that were constructed around a love for 'music' seemingly abandoned it in favor of money. Not that money's a bad thing... But screwing a loyal viewer/subscriber base? That's not so good.

The Volume CD series is probably best described as a magazine with a CD soundtrack. They were published from September 1991 to January 1997, ending at a special 2-disc Volume 17. Since they are published in the UK, it was generally really expensive to get them on import (it's not uncommon to find them new at $20 to $30). What makes them special (besides the cool booklet feature), is that the tracks are usually demos, alternate version, or remixes, exclusively on Volume.

Although the series started off as mostly British indie rock, it was clear that music in England had started to branch off to two distinctive sounds: Britpop and Trance/Techno dance. So Trance Europe Express was made in September 1993. It was so successful, it was followed up by three sequels, plus Trance Atlantic, TEXTure (remixes compilation), and Wasted.

I was surprised to find Wasted at Amoeba for $2.95. This is a two-disc (30 songs) that was kind of the techno answer to their Britpop compilation, Sharks Patrol These Waters.

This song I have chosen is Tricky's "You Don't" (sung by Martine). It originally appeared in Volume 10.

Trivia: Tricky appeared as a henchman to Gary Oldman's character in the movie "The Fifth Element" (1997).
